Patriots trade for Bears OG Ryan Groy

My impression was that he thinks we'll trade one of the guys we pick in the 6th round next year because we'll likely have three 6th round compensatory picks, which of course can't be traded, but the drafted player can be.

ohhh yeah, my mistake -- that was it

guess derby would've been the only other 6th rounder , anyway.

They traded Groy for Wells. That's too bad! I wanted Wells to become a kick ass coverage linebacker. Seemed like he had the speed.

I was hoping for the same thing. Either or he evolved into an in the box SS w/ good ball skills.

Oh well. If it's one the Pats do well is judge talent once a player has been in the system for a bit.

couldn't the bears just poach him back if they try to get him on ps?

Yes. But Groy would be in control. He could sign to any team's Practice Squad. The patriots have a pretty good record of developing UDFA OL and having them eventually be contributors or even starters.

Nate Ebner is a better athlete with more experience in the system, and is a very good special teams player. He also was used in that hybrid role a little bit before he was injured last year, and it would not surprise me to see him get more of such opportunities in the future

Ebner is a free agent at the end of the year. The Pats also just cut Chris White, who was one of their primary special teams linebackers, though he could be back once he can pass his physical.

We've heard about Jordan Richards and Duron Harmon making plays. With McCourty's extension, the safety position looks deeper than it did prior to the draft..

Supposedly, Jonathan Freeny has been impressing and this may have been one of the factors behind trading Wells despite cutting Chris White. The Pats also have the likes of Fleming, Gordon, Martin, Dekoda Watson, LJ Fort, and James Morris.. Watson is a vet who has plenty of special teams ability and he has reserve LB potential. And this doesn't consider Dane Fletcher, who is still on the PUP and is also a very good special teams player.

I still wish that Bill would just sign Evan Mathis and leave no doubt about the state of LG.

BB will end up recouping Wells through the waiver wire

We average 2.2 LB's on the field. Hightower, Collins and Mayo make 3 very good LB's. The rest are backups. As you say, we have lots of solid competition for the 2-4 LB/ST roster spots. Wells and White were amply expendable. IMHO, they both were below Morris, Fletcher, Watson and Martin on the depth chart.

The Dolphins are currently the frontrunners, but they are trying to whittle down his 6m dollar a year demands. My guess is that he eventually comes down but they still end up overpaying a bit in the 3.5--4.5 m dollar range.

I've love to see him come here as well, I just think he's looking for too much money.

Yeah, this proves that Fletcher isn't exactly the lock to make the team that a lot of people think he is.

Either way, we're fine at the position of LB. I'd have to guess that both Fletcher and Morris make it due to depth and ST play, with an additional LB carried on the PS at some point during the season.

In all these discussions no one seems to want to consider Geneo Grissom as an OLB candidate and the potential #4 LB. We have a need there even though there are plenty of ST LBs and a surplus at DE.

Why?

It makes little difference whether you call Grissom a DE or OLB. He will make the 53 man squad. I usually list 5 DE's, 5 DT's and 5 LB's. With Grissom listed as an OLB, I would have 4 DE's, 5 DT's and 6 LB's. Either is a reasonable allocation of roster spots.

We have 2.2 LB's on the field on average. We have Hightower, Mayo and Collins. That makes 3. We usually carry 2 LB/STers. We have several who are better than Grissom at this dual role.

THAT BEING SAID
We could list 4 DT's, 4 DE's, 4 LB's, and 3 LB/ST/DL's. Perhaps, such a listing would better reflect the flexibility required by Belichick.

BOTTOM LINE - WHO DO WE NEED (after the 11 locks)?
DE: Ninkovich, Jones, Sheard
rookies: Flowers, Grissom (call them what you want)
DT: Brown, Siliga, Easley
LB: Mayo, Hightower, Collins

We have 3-5 positions left. I think that we need 2 additional DT's, 1 positional LB, and one more player, probably a ST/LB.

Because he just might not be that good.

I'd give Mathis a 2 year deal, anywhere between the $4-6 M a year range. He is that good, and its somewhat of a need with Wendell hurt and Mason being a project.

I question if Belichick would even think twice about paying that kind of money, but who knows?

I agree with you that I am concerned about LG, and that Mathis would be a fine candidate if he weren't looking for so much money.
