I can't help it - I'm getting excited about Malcolm Butler

I cannot remember a player that Belichick has been more enamored with than Butler. As a rookie he started in place of Revis or opposite of Revis last preseason in all 4 games despite Browner, Dennard, Ryan, Arrington and others being on the roster. That indicates to me that there is tons of reason to be excited for this kid.

We are talking about a player who surpassed everyone not named Revis or Browner in his rookie season and then made the greatest defensive play in the history of the Super Bowl.

I think a 24 year old Butler is going to be a better CB than a 30 year old Revis and I don't care if you think I'm crazy for saying that.

yes, I think you're crazy -- but he'll probably be better value.
if you add in other players we get to keep for that $ the whole package is prob better

Thats the thing...he will get burnt this year more than once. The dude hasn't started an NFL game yet. The key is how he responds.

Clearly BB saw something Day 1 when he showed up.
I agree, he'll get his share playing CB1 against the best, and usually you'd want CBs to have a short memory. Luckily, with Butler, he can constantly be reminded that the reason why he's on the field is 1) He earned the playing time throughout last year competing with a roster stacked with good-to-great veteran CBs and 2) he made perhaps the greatest single play in the history of the NFL's greatest franchise immediately after giving up one of the most unlucky/demoralizing plays a CB could give up. And why did he make that play? Because he listened to Belichick.

Never forget, Malcolm, never forget.

I like Butler but he's still got to go out and show a great deal of consistency. Game to game, play to play, as well as the ability to recover after letting up plays. If they can get solid play out of Butler and Brown this secondary will be good and it should be a top 7-8 spring defense.

Malcolm is a pit bull in pads, compete level is off the charts. I can't wait to watch him

Right now he is our lead #1 CB...and by the way he has been playing..i am fine with that. If Brown can stay constant..we have had MUCH worse on deep run playoff teams

I think it's kind of interesting that it seems they've plugged him into a side rather than moved him around.
at least that's what I've read

Strictly on the left side...

I barely knew anything about Butler until after the Superbowl last year. This article came out later that month -- probably posted here before, but I thought it was illuminating:

He comes off as very humble. After reading it I started thinking he's more than a one-hit wonder.
Yes, I remember reading that at the time it came out. Thought this particular passage boded well, interesting to reread it now:

"And yet Butler, who made the rookie minimum of $420,000 last season, will find himself fighting for a roster spot in August. That’s the cold reality of Bill Belichick’s NFL, even after you find yourself taking a selfie with LL Cool J and getting Jamie Foxx’s cell number at the Grammy’s. That’s why Butler says he’s dedicating himself to four pillars: staying humble, being appreciative, remaining focused and continuing to work hard."

I gotta get me a Butler jersey to add to the collection

Isn't that typical for a BB defense? I swear I remember reading that they believed in having a corner play a side rather than playing matchups because it allows the corner to always know their orientation relative to the sidelines without having to think about it or something.

Butler made at least four stops in the last two Seahawks drives, no?

- The trip
- The tackle
- The re-tackle
- The interception

probably in general, but don't think it was so much adhered to last year with revis + browner

I'm not an expert, but I think that's more indicative of the zone defense we're inevitably going to run. More pass rush up front, with the secondary facing the line of scrimmage. More run support and more jumping routes from the DBs. Just trust in McCourty as the single high S and make it a race to the ball for the other 10.

Reiss added some good commentary on MB that got me all warm and tingly.

There are so many notable and important things that happen during a New England Patriots two-hour practice, but some days, one thing so clearly stands out above the rest that it simply makes you say, "Wow."

That's how I'd describe the team's Monday practice, specifically with cornerback Malcolm Butler.

This isn't to overstate one practice, and also doesn't overlook that Butler is far from a finished product and there's still a long way to go. But sometimes you just see something in a player and say "That looks different than most everyone else." It was similar to the way I used to feel watching receiver Randy Moss run down the field at times.
