Sorry Matt Wells the Speed demon undersized linebacker
Sorry to see Wells go. Wanted to see what he could do. Even at safety he has great measurables. Oh well, "I am Groy".

Belichick most likely wasn't impressed or he saw the depth at guard and Brady was like if I have to have Devey at center at all I will just take the four games.

He played some center in college as well as tackle. So he has the versatility BB likes in his OL.

Very cool. He was one of my binkies in 2014. I love Wisconsin O-linemen. I think he'll do well here.

Traded for Chris Wells

So in a way, we drafted _three_ OL this year. Tre Jackson and Shaq Mason with our own picks, then Groy for the player we took in the 6th. With this kind of resources spent on the OL Googe better put them to good use.

Somewhere in the back of mind, I have to wonder about 2 things

1. How long is going to take for Ryan Wendell to get back?

2. How well are the 2 rookies ACTUALLY doing?

From the Chicago boards:

"but Groy could have actually had OL ability which imo we needed more. color me confused"

"There goes a promising young OL. Personally I wouldn't have agreed to that trade."

"So we traded a promising young OL for a guy who clearly is ONLY going to be useful on ST?

patriots -1
Bears-0

Groy is possible.future starter in this.league"

"Is it Knee-Jerk Reaction Monday? Come now, there must have been some real "issues" with ST coverage for them to have to trade Groy."

"Groy was a serviceable G. I hope we got something for him."

"We traded a serviceable back up G for a legally blind LB? Super Bowl!!!"

"Welp, there goes Cutlers pocket"

Leave it to Belechick to penetrate to the heart of the matter. He doesn't need a game-breaking RB nor even a game breaking WR. They are superfluous to winning a Championship ,as long as competence exists at those positions. But an Offensive line that is not superior in some positions like Left and Right tackle and even merely competent elsewhere, can sabotage any Offense and even get a QB injured.

So he traded off a possible future ST star to merely acquire a LG that might be a below average, but hopefully competent reserve at LG.

Tre Jackson seems to be a a natural to excel at RG and can be back-uped by either/both Fleming or Wendel or cannon. But the issue is LG. Shaq Mason is a powerful G/C who is a starter quality player but who is significantly undersized. He is also inexperienced at Pass blocking. Kline is merely a average PS squader who is also somewhat undersized. Belichick felt, quite correctly IMHO, that he wanted more assurance.

Gory who is NOT undersized, 6'4.5 " and 320#s, has played LG in the Big Ten, and has size and valid combine statistics. The question is why with those credentials, he went un-drafted. Can he play? But perhaps BB was not looking for a starter, but someone who will not embarass the rest of the line. It appears he got what he was looking to get.

Once again BB uses all three methods to acquire talent, while leaving no obvious holes. Firstly the Draft, secondly key veterans FA, who may not be on the ascending part of their careers, but can play; and finally trades to fill for the few holes remaining.

miguel says he suspects bb to trade another of the 6th picks........

For me this is a no-brainer. We needed competition at LG. We picked up a UDFA who started three games last year.

Most of us have looking for us to pick up a LG or two, especially after Connolly announced his retirement. Wendell is injured. Picking up a guard/center becomes even more of a no-brainer.

If everyone now on the squad is healthy when last cuts are made, Groy is competing with Kline and Devey for the last OL roster spot. If he doesn't win a spot on the 53, he is reasonable PS material.

couldn't the bears just poach him back if they try to get him on ps?

My impression was that he thinks we'll trade one of the guys we pick in the 6th round next year because we'll likely have three 6th round compensatory picks, which of course can't be traded, but the drafted player can be.
