Karen Guregian has an early cut at the roster out, and it reminded me of where the biggest logjams are or aren't.

K/P/LS -- None, of course.

QB -- None. Brady and Jimmy G. are the only 2 QBs one actually wants on the roster.

RB -- A mild one, because nobody has really distinguished himself beyond Blount (who's both mildly injured and mildly suspended) and Bolden (who has done so only on STs).

WE -- A mild one, because all of Dobson, Gibson, Boyce and Tyms have flashed, but none inspires much confidence.

TE/FB -- None, unless you'd mourn the departure of Jake Bequette.

OL -- Oh dear, Kline and Devey can't both fit on the roster. Whatever shall we do??

Edge rusher -- A mild one; there may be no room for Zach Moore.

DT -- A bigger one, as it were. Two deserving guys (e.g. Chris Jones and Vellano) may find themselves without spots.

LB -- A bigger one. A bunch of deserving guys may find themselves without spots.

S -- A bigger one. Wilson and Ebner both clearly deserve spots, but it's hard to keep both.

CB -- A mild one at most. The challenge is finding 5 guys who can reliably play.

Summing up, the biggest logjams are in the center of the defense.

Seeing guys like Devey and Vellano get bumped off would be fine, particularly since it would be representing new draft picks with an upgrade in talent and a higher ceiling.

The competition at CB/S is exactly what we want and need, as the cream will rise to the top. Both Richards and Roberts have been opening eyes, and even Wilson seems to have improved (already a strong ST candidate as it is).

WR is another position where the talent should be improved upon from the last few years. Gibson is better than we usually have as WR5 competition, and Dobson + Boyce are a year further in the system.

The loss of a guy like Zach Moore at DE would suck, but it's difficult to imagine him making the team with the 2 rookies that were taken, unless the logjam is so significant that we see a rare first year rookie cut, which pretty much never happens.

The change in PS rules will help, as some of these guys can still be kept.

Zach Moore is bulked up and playing DT. Chris Jones could be on the bubble and i don't know what Vellano is deserving of in terms of making an NFL roster.

Depends on your definition of logjam. I can't see missing any of the bubble guys. By Thanksgiving, there will still be players on this team that I hardly trust with the game on the line, so...

Yeah, that's right, Moore has bulked up to improve his chances at DT instead.

Even then, he's probably still on the outside looking in with Siliga, Brown, Easley, Branch, Johnson, and Chris Jones all possibly being ahead of him. That's at least 5 and maybe even 6 players who are ahead of him at the moment.

Either way, he's gotta be looking like a strong cut/PS candidate, which is fine.

Zach Moore shouldnt be bumped off the roster by Branch who hasnt even been on the field yet.
Vs. Moore who has bulked up has youth and athletic upside

We'll need to see some preseason games first. I don't think there are as many sure things as you do.

Not Branch -- Antonio Johnson.

Well, I guess it depends on which version of the roster one considers. There's a logjam. :)

Logan Ryan making the team is surprising to me...all I saw last season was him chasing people.....

Maybe it's just snapshots of him that don't represent the overall picture....

Anyone with thoughts either way on him?

With DT's, if I didn't know where Easley was drafted then he would have been my choice to cut instead of Moore/Jones. So far to me, he's been pushed around in the run game and put no pressure on the QB in the passing game. I understand he had serious injuries and it takes about 12 months to fully recover from them. Let's hope he shows something in the preseason games.

Yeah, I wouldn't rule him out.

I think he's good as a ball hawk and tackler. You don't have to be a starter to contribute.

Vellano is absolutely terrible. His signature move is to get blown off the line of scrimmage and then beg for a holding call. If he makes this team, something has gone horribly wrong.

Which is good news if (like me) you believe good defense starts with strength up the middle.

I have been to 3 practices so far and I'ld say he is our third best DB behind McCourty and Butler. He looks pretty good this camp generally tight in coverage and made a few pass break ups that I saw.
Also at times in the past he has looked bad but he has also been a starter for us before so the notion he shouldn't make the team seems really far off to me.

Ryan is fine in zone, and he has been having a good camp. Ryan has experience starting. He is a solid special teamer.

IMHO, Ryan will make the team unless he is injured.

I guess it depends on what you mean by logjam. You seem to asking whether where we might be forced to cut a player who we really like or want. In that sense, I agree with your analysis.

I think of logjam as several player competing for roster positions, with the losers being cut.

OFFENSE
IMHO, there are logjams at RB and WR. The position of 3rd down RB is key position.

DEFENSE
I agree that there is a logjam at DT and LB. My personal view is that Chris Jones and Morris are vey likely to make the 53. That still leaves a fight for one spot at each position.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Yes, we will need to choose between Ebner and Wilson, although we could keep both an one fewer LB/STer.

Lets not put anybody on the PS just yet until we see what we have at pass rush from the inside. We have Sucked! in that area for quite sometime now. I do not want to see the basketball player Chandler Jones rushing from the inside it negates his effectiveness. I will be watching Zack Moore and D Easley from the inside.

I'll try a slightly different look. I have 10 wide open positions.

OFFENSE (4)
#5 WR (I have Dobson as the #4)
#3 RB
#4 RB
#9 OL

DEFENSE (6)
#4 DT (I'm going with the crowd here; I think that Chris Jones is a lock)
#5 DT
#5 LB (I have Morris as the #4)
#4 CB
#5 CB
#5 S

Obviously, we could choose to keep an additional player at any position and one fewer at another. This especially true on defense where the following are primarily special teams positions: #5 S, #5 CB, and #5 LB.

I think that we could go though the season needing almost none of these bottom 10 to be serious contributors. I do believe that the #3 RB could be key contributor, as Vereen was. Most of these players would be inactive in a given week.
