Spygate Re-visited

Yes. He probably saved BB from a lengthy suspension as well.
The one certainty is that as a result of Kraft's capitulation then is that the Patriot's reputation was destroyed and that is one of the factors that has made this witch hunt successful. Conversely, I think if Kraft had stood up to Goodell then like Bisciotti did for Rice , it would have made a difference. I feel if the tapes revealed the fact that other teams including Goodell's Jets were doing the same, it would have been difficult to single out BB and the Pats for punishment. Of course, Rooney and Mara who are Goodell's guardians told Kraft to do it for the shield as they told Goodell to destroy the tapes to cover his rear.

What STILL perplexes me is that Kraft DID IT AGAIN when he surrendered at the 1st threat of opposition this time. Did he learn NOTHING?

His latest fulminiations are Full of Sound & Fury Signifying Nothing.

The only part that stands out in a somewhat questionable way to me would be Jonathan Kraft's use of the all caps "GOD" when describing Goodell. One may argue that it appears childish and over the top for a guy like Kraft, not to mention the unlikelihood of him posting on an ESPN message board.

Again, that's just my opinion. As you said, it really doesn't matter if it's Kraft or not, as the post and facts were very informative. Thank you for sharing it.
I also believe someone with Kraft's education would use punctuation more effectively. But I could be wrong.

Not exactly Shakespeare but "Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice shame on me" I think Goodell has done it to Kraft more than twice which speaks volumes about Kraft. I am not willing to have Kraft do it to me more than once after his capitulation speech.

We need to release the videos of other teams taping us. Eff Goodell and his gag order.

When BB did his presser after Colts AFCCG addressing PSIs that was first time I ever heard him say anything about Spygate when he was asked by a Mediot. He didn't back off, he told it like it is/was and he even mentioned other teams were doing it as well and left it at that. It was never questioned again as to what teams were involved. I believe Jets did it first to us earlier. So did Kraft, for Goodell* and Owners, take one for league, had tapes of others destroyed not to implicate them for damage to shield? Then let me see all these fans talkin chit when their teams are exposed and part of 'Spygate' Let'm keep Hating We'll just keep Winning.

You can't really compare Spygate and the RR issue. One was a player issue and the other a league "scandal".

Possibly but by exposing the other 31 teams then the entire integrity of the game would have been compromised.

.....or that's what people want you to believe. They love accusing people of that.

What is the context for this writeup? Can you provide a link to it please?

There is no link as the post was created back in May 2008 on the ESPN forums (back when everyone used to post on there) and then deleted a few days later... whether by ESPN or the OP no one knows.

Required reading for all

Let’s put aside the taping by the Broncos, Jets, Cowboys, Chiefs, Dolphins, etc. and focus on the evil Patriots seeing as how they are the target of your selective outrage.

Read carefully.

Ray Anderson, the NFL head of game operations, sent out a memo to all teams that read:

“Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.”
That’s great, Ray. But your memo isn’t the rule; The one that’s stated in the rulebook; The one that must be voted on by the teams. Pages A105-A106 of the league’s Policy Manual for Member Clubs Volume II: Game Operations 2007 edition: Miscellaneous Rules and Regulations, Section A. reads:

“No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game.”
The ACTUAL rule says nothing about recording offensive or defensive signals and moreover says filming isn’t allowed from the “field” (interpreted as helmet cams, etc) - NOT the “sideline” as Anderson would write.

Yes. Ray Anderson misquoted the rules. But Anderson’s new rule must be ratified by at least 75% of the team owners. This goes for rule changes. Does Goodell, Anderson, et al have the right to adjust the rules on the fly as they deem fit without team ratification? Apparently so.

Belichick argued Article IX of the NFL Constitution and By-laws which reads:

“Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game.”
This states that the use of any sort of taped information is illegal for use during the game THAT day. Belichick argued that his filming was never used for THAT day (which was later corroborated by the video tech and Goodell).

The NFL cited the memo's misquoted rules instead of the ACTUAL rules when it made its accusations and subsequent punishment against the Patriots.

Filming opponent’s signals was never illegal –and wasn’t even after the Patriots did it. (In 2008, defensive captains were allowed helmet communication to the sidelines - same as quarterbacks.)

The rules do not matter. Goodell and his office specifically told the teams NOT to do it – and that evil, insubordinate Belichick decided that he would stick to the rulebook – you know, the actual rule - and Goodell took that as a slap in the face to his authority.

It was a battle of egos.

That’s your “Spygate”.

That’s what this entire circus was about.

Horrifying. I know.

People still think this is a scandal.

Any football fan that devotes a little bit of time into researching this issue can see it was much ado about nothing.

But you’re not interested in that.

You hate the Patriots because they win. If you scream “SPYGATE” loud enough – it justifies your hatred.

(Sidenote: How does one “Spy” out in the open?)
(Sidenote again: Patriots winning percentage during Spygate was 67% - after Spygate 78% - your Spygate argument is invalid).

From this ever-egregious infraction, the amount of accusations that have been concocted could fill up an entire show on Coast to Coast radio. They MUST still be cheating to have so much success. So let the accusations begin:

-Filmed walkthrough practices of opposing teams

-Stole/jammed opponent’s wireless audio signals

-Secret microphones on shoulder pads to pick up on-field signals

-Received opponent’s offensive playbooks

-Towel boy spies in opponent’s locker room

-TV in the Gillette Stadium parking lot that can be seen from inside the stadium by Belichick from the sideline that helps him determine whether or not to throw a challenge flag (I’m not joking – Sports Illustrated actually accused him of that).

well, it certainly synchs up well with a couple of the personal accounts in here.
I really never knew those details, so this thread has been a pretty interesting read.

Spygate is like the 86 Red Sox. It's in the history books and the team has had great success since but when you sit back and take some time to reflect and account for all the little things that went wrong and what should have happened it still pisses you off in a major way.

By capitulating and consequently throwing BB under the bus, Kraft stopped being the owner of the Pats and started being Goodell's lapdog. We all see what happened since then.

did he throw bb under bus?

according to some story in here goodell was ready to suspend belichick but kraft stepped in to defuse that + take the franchise penalty.

The Pats should have fought spygate. But Kraft didn't want to upset his BFF.
