Florio should call out ESPN for taking this article down

reiss has a blog entry on ESPN Boston. Apparently the rule isn't strictly enforced at all and violated regularly

Unfortunately, he's right and you're wrong.

High school science/the Ideal Gas Law tell us what happens at equilibrium. They don't tell us how quickly equilibrium is reached. I.e., it's inevitable that a ball of a certain volume at a certain temperature will eventually get to a certain pressure (assuming that it doesn't leak, etc.). But the simple science we usually talk about doesn't tell us how soon that will happen, and in particular not whether it will happen over the timeframe of half a football game.

Well, actually, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes. There have been about 10,001 experiments shown on video by now that show this.

So, I'm right and he's wrong. The end.

Sounds like another rule I've read about recently....

But it's not about how strictly it's enforced or whether it should be a rule. It's about integrity.

That's a much stronger condemnation than I expected. Intense criticism of the NFL's handling of the Brady case has become pervasive in national sports media outside ESPN and NFL Network/NFL.com over the last couple months, in a way I didn't expect. The NFL really shoot themselves in their own foot here by putting a foot on the scale several times in order to undermine Brady's and the Patriots' reputations. They could have so easily escaped the criticism they are getting now just by being transparent about the investigation, publicly reporting accurate information at the beginning, having Goodell directly apply whatever discipline he seemed appropriate, choosing one of the neutral systems arbitrators for the appeal hearing, and living with the final decision. It was only by deliberately maligning Brady with lies and slander and deception and tricks that they made this into such a huge media circus and ended up hurting their own reputations.

"It was only by deliberately maligning Brady with lies and slander and deception and tricks that they made this into such a huge media circus and ended up hurting their own reputations"

Which incidently, provides the tough to find evidence of malicious intent that the Supreme Court required for ' public figures' to proved slander and libel.

Right. There are only two possibilities. Either the Logo gauge was used, proving nothing happened. Or, at worst, the other gauge was used, suggesting - only suggesting - that there was a drop in pressure undiscernable to an unaided human.

I believe Ted Wells' underling at his presser said it didn't matter what gauge was used. The clear implication was that a nefarious inflation scheme was proven using the results from either gauge.
Since Ted is a neutral and fair third party who performed a thorough and very competent investigation, no one should doubt the conclusion that either gauge's measurement points to guilt.

Hard to believe it but Wells underling did say either gauge proved guilt (which seems clearly a major moment of incompetence), and it is hard to believe Goodell (hard to believe him on many things) could praise this Wells crud with almost no one in the media calling him on it. How this has played out should be a reminder to all that this process -- even inside a legal court -- isn't likely to be about what is and is not fair, just and the right thing.

... 'what happens if nfl measures balls this season and thsy lose psi in the cold?' , etc
like there's actually some kind of empirical evidence needed to determine if gravity exists

ignorance in this country is saddening

NFL: There has been considerable discussion recently as to whether two plus two equals four. To settle this, over the next six months we will monitor the results of what happens whenever we have two things and then we get two more things. Will we then have four things? It is important to know, for SURE. ;)

So we can add Time as another ally.

The real risk for the owners is having the inner workings of this investigation revealed to the public that still thinks the Patriots are cheaters and TB is guilty.

For The Win.

Time has been our Greatest Ally from Day 1 of this Vile Atrocity.

There will always be a Joe Walljasper out there somewhere:

"......Time to put aside the pride. Brady should admit he ordered the footballs to be deflated — for the good of his team, even if he really is innocent — and Goodell should admit he overreacted."

***Hey, Joe Walljasper, Let's say someone claims that you are a pedophile. You should admit it for the good of your family, even if you are really innocent. Put aside your pride. OK?
.

Why isn't this the lead the story. King doesn't want to make anyone angry so he buries the story in his article.
