Patriots Training Camp Day 4 Thread

The hidden text might be the loudest...do CBs who cover well get thrown on a lot - hence make themselves tweetable? I would say thee nay. I'm hoping the relative silence is because of great coverage.
I can't speak about the tweets or hidden texts.

But when I go to camp I try to focus on one or two things. This weekend it was the DBs and rookie guards.

While watching the DBs I tried to get an eye on each at various points and wether due to tight coverage, good positioning, or making a play like tipping a pass I came away thinking McCourty, Ryan, Butler in that order are ahead of everyone else and I was pleased by Brown Sunday but didn't notice as much on Sat. I try not to be negative because what the hell do I know so no knock on Fletcher or McClain or whoever else but those 3 stand out more to me. Chung is what he is at this point and I was pleased with Richards Sat not as noticeable Sunday and without knocking him I would have liked to see more out of Harmon.

How's Geneo Grissom doing?

Not much to share today. The Edelman-Butler battles have been the most entertaining aspect of camp. Brady to Edelman is one of the toughest combos to stop in the league (especially on 1v1 drills) yet Butler sure makes it tough.

As someone who has been down on Dobson, I echo what the media saw and that he had a terrific weekend. He clearly looks like the second best WR out there with Lafell out. His route running looks improved. Easily had the best practice of any player today.

I thought he was cooked. It's early and this may be a camp overreaction but Lafell vs. Dobson could become a battle soon for WR2.

Not many reps so far on the first team. Flowers has seen a good amount though. I haven't focused on him during second team drills to judge anything.

Any James Morris news?

Agreed and it's nice to see them both taking first team reps so far.

They really don't have much of a choice, Ashley. Ryan Wendell is on PUP, and Connelly obviously retired.

I mean, theoretically, they could use Devey or Kline more, but it seems like a great opportunity to see what they have with their mid round OL picks.

Ryan has done great things with less. He's a hell of a defensive mind and I expect that defense to be the real deal.

All true, which means he can be a terrific DC.

I wouldn't want that clown running my offense or being the face of my team though.

Extremely overrated as a HC.

A pass to the sideline with the WR stretching out fully and actually catching it is not really defendable. That was good coverage but that is just a nasty pass and catch to try to stop.

If (I recognize the size of that if) Dobson can both stay healthy and be a middle-deep threat, the Patriots could have a 5-'wide' package of

Edelman
Gronk
Chandler
LaFell
Dobson

which could make for some interesting formations and routes.

Well that certain is not the "smurf" line up we have seen in the past. Though i wonder if Dobson will be in their over Amendola. He might but he still needs to earn it.

I don't get the love for Rex Ryan. He inherited a decent defense in NJ and it got worse each year under his leadership.

We'll have to disagree. I think he is one of the best DCs in the game, good enough that offsets much of his deficiency in offense and team management.

Agree that he is one of the better defensive minds but vehemently disagree about it offsetting the areas that he sucks in.

Otherwise the Jets wouldn't have been a consistent laughing stock for 3-4 years. They were very far away from being average.

Kinda like the Back Shoulder throw Brady and LaFell was lethal with that last year. Hope to see Brady/Dobson combo hitting on that same play Defenses would be at a loss just thinking about it.

Loved LaFell's play during and after the KC game but man Dobson could potentially have the better Skill set because of his speed. If Dobson improves in his route ruinning and hands we might finally have that young Stud WR we have been lacking since Terry Glenn. I hope Dobson turns out to be a poor man's Julio Jones.

I don't think we've seen the best of Lafell yet. He spent the first quarter of the season getting on the same page with Brady and the last quarter of the season dealing with nagging injuries that seemed to slow him down. Either way, a leap from Dobson would be crucial even if just from a depth perspective.

Between Belichick, McDaniels, and Brady, the Patriots are probably the most creative offensive team in the league. Dobson emerging wouldn't be so much about starter vs. depth or upgrading LaFell. It would be about giving that trio yet another weapon with a slightly different skillset that can create matchups they couldn't create before. That's nothing but a good thing.

That's why I said "offsets much of." Clearly the total package is a negative, though I suspect he had to deal with more than his own inadequacies. Ownership and personnel management did him no favors.

True that the Defense cannot double everybody with Gronk and Edelman being the primary concern of Defenses. Should be interesting to see how our other Skill Personel handle single coverage.
