Lupica Again!

Some of that might have to do with the fact that the Rooneys have owned the Steelers for 82 years.

And that's not about winning...

I, and so many others, were wrong about the kind of influence and respect that Kraft had throughout the ownership circle. I think its obvious now that he's regarded as 'new money.'

And that's not about winning...
Of course not, it's about legacy.

If you've been around, basically, since the NFL was invented, the league office will be less likely to make an example out of you.

Mike Tomlin tried to TRIP A PLAYER DURING A PLAY, and got a fine.

Can you imagine if Belichick had tried that?

Exactly. That's why I've been saying that it's not the winning that's the issue. Winning may be a contributing factor, but it's not the trigger.

I think the NFL is and a great way to hit them is to tie this article on ESPN being punished with a weak NFL schedule as punishment for criticisms of Goodell with why ESPN and Mort have not retracted or commented on 11 of 12. Nothing says corrept more than this intimidation and it is easy for the press to understand. NFL uses Mort to spread lies then holds Mort and ESPN hostage with threat of MNF duds.

You need to add that Olberman and Simmons are gone from ESPN as well and they had criticized Goodell as well. Maybe if we put enough pieces together a pattern will fall into place that even non-patriot fans can see.

Another thought some report should pick up and make a case for: Roger Goodell did everything he could try to get a conviction in the public. If this really was about "protecting" the shield. Everything would have been hushed until he did his research and then announced his findings.

Instead...R. Stokoe wanted to hear his voice and see his image plastered about local media. It's not only his process that is out of check and running rampant, it's his ego and the fact that he (and his gang of ex-Jets) have always run from a position of {presumed" guilt before they even had the facts.

Kessler used the word ambush and that's a nice start, but it goes much deeper than that.

These portray my sentiments, the whole underinflated ball thing is a minor infraction which the NFL has completely lost control of..

The NFL has officially taken a misdemeanor and turned it into Biogenesis. Or, as Bob Costas said the other day, they've taken a misdemeanor and literally turned it into a federal case, even as the judge who will eventually hear the thing practically begs the league and the union to settle without wasting his, or his court's, time.

I never expected the tune to turn away from air pressure to process this quickly but it's enjoyable.
Sports journalists follow the herd mentality. Many jumped on the "Brady is guilty" bandwagon early almost reflexively. Now we have writers like Jenkins, Stradley and now Lupica outside New England who are taking the hard look ( the one Curran has done yeoman's work on in New England) and I expect others to follow. If Lupica is writing this in New York, I'm hopeful the herd will look at the due process aspect of it.
Once in Federal Court, they can't argue the merits of the case just that the process wasn't fair. I don't need to rehash it but I think that is what Kessler is pressing in his filings.
I'm hopeful it turns out the way it should but too many things have an Alice in Wonderland look about them (what's up is down and what's down is up) while the league office is a combination of the G0dfather and Three Stooges.

Here's an article about that.

NFL and ESPN: A Recent History of Muted Criticism and Alleged Leaked and Loaded Information
http://thebiglead.com/2015/07/31/espn-nfl-criticism-simmons-goodell-mortensen/

Here's an exerpt:
"1) August, 2013 – ESPN abruptly backed out of a joint film venture with PBS, League of Denial. PBS was examining concussions and football. ESPN had been working with PBS for 15 months, and pulled out at the last minute. Only the truly naive would assume there’s no connection here between the NFL and ESPN."

This is why people blaming Mort for his report need to look deeper. $1.9 billion deeper into the corruption on Park Ave.

I read the article with my coffee this morning.

Like other posters, I'd disagree with some of Lupica's points, but, on balance, the article is positive. Unfortunately, for the time being that doesn't matter all that much, as the case is now in the hands of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

My main takeaway after reading the article is that Goodell bet the farm by immediately filing his Motion to have his ruling upheld. He was no doubt hoping to get a more "corporate friendly" Judge, but ended up with Berman, who gives us a small glimmer of hope that Brady can pull off another big win.

If Berman vacates the "arbiter's" ruling and refers the matter to an independent arbiter acceptable to his court, I think Goodell is toast...and I think he's figured that out. In fact, it's possible that Lupica has timed this piece (where he breaks no new ground) to get the attention of Berman's clerks.

Goodell may have outsmarted himself; he is the one who filed the motion. It would be his motion that is rejected.
