Hasn't anyone yet learned? You can't trust the NFL on this - they blatantly and purposefully slandered Brady with false information from the start

Brady was once again walking a line of cooperating - but not setting a precedent for ALL other players

The main question is - shouldn't Goodell have to, you know, show the footballs were actually DEFLATED (and he can't) before trampling on the private rights of NFLPA members?

Reportedly this "destruction" came at the recommendation of Brady's attorney's. Seems to me it's possible that when Goodell quite literally "moved the goalposts" - insisting on him actually turning over his cellphone in the appeal when they never wanted it before - might have been Kessler's way of saying FU to Roger - and a potential "rope-a-dope" at that (quite literally in Roger's case)

The fact that we are now learning that Roger Goodell actually had NO interest whatsoever in talking to those people just shows that even this request is more about a power and pissing match by Goodell than anything else

this is a chess match that has more to do with the rights of players and the responsibility of the Commissioner to actually show wrongdoing before trampling on player rights and then suspending them for 1/4th a season

Was expecting Florio to dump on Brady after today's news, but he is still sticking up for him, or maybe more accurately, still against the NFL front office. I take back everything bad I said about him (for now).

I can't believe I'm saying this, but thank God for Florio. He's been on the ball.

It's painfully obvious that Goodell was not interested in learning the truth, but doing what he assigned Wells with, find em guilty no matter what. And then spin to the lowest common denominator of the American public, the media, who eats up buzz words like "destroy".

That's already been posted in another thread.

Florio originally did dump on Brady in the first 2-3 hours after the story broke today. He is definitely moving in a different direction now and one can only hope it is because he is getting some info.

Mike Florio continues his great analysis on this story.
They can't use the word destroy if Brady doesn't destroy his own phone.
Sadly Tom Brady gift wrapped the noose that Roger Goodell has used to hang him out to dry.
I still can't believe Brady was that naive and foolish.
What a chump!

Stop and think about this for a second... Goodell is telling Brady - after NOT wanting the cell phone during the investigation - then changing his mind during the appeal - that the NFL has ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSIBILITY to show that a rule (one they really don't even care about apparently) was broken before trampling on players'- and anyone the NFLPA members texted - personal rights

Goodell thinks he has a right to ANY player's Cell phone and he will if this precedent is accepted by Brady and the NFLPA

What Kessler effectively did is say "OK Roger - you think you have dictatorial power to force NFLPA members to give up their rights - AND force the OTHER people on the other side of the text to ALSO give up their rights to privacy?"

"Fine - then YOU go tell them the NFL has a right to their texts - regardless of the fact that you have YET to show that ANY rule was violated."

It's actually a pretty savvy move by Kessler when you think about it - and is why of course Goodell didn't go after the list of people that Brady was texting - because he KNOWS what a hornets nest that opens.

The Haters seem to be forgetting that there are TWO parties on every text - and by MANDATING that Brady abolish his own rights to privacy Goodell is ALSO mandating that no one Brady texted has a right to privacy either

It's a ridiculous assertion that Goodell is making - again, without even the slightest burden of proof that ANYTHING occurred. And they all are just mindlessly cheering Roger on

I guess Goodell and I agree on one thing - most fans ARE exceptionally gullible and easily manipulated!

He wasn't being naive. Wiping out a cell phone that he was replacing and was never going to hand over to the NFL was a rational decision. It's Goodell who is treating naive people as fools as they buy into this red herring nonsense. This is not about a phone which the NFL had zero authority to obtain, but is playing perfectly to nonthinking people as Goodell is covering up for the fact he has zero evidence. And people are running with it. It's pathetic on many accounts.

I wonder if the phone was even destroyed? I'm avoiding all media and web sites (except here) until I see the other side of the coin. The NFL is good at showing their side in a damaging way but Kessler said he would be speaking soon, so we'll see what's on the other side.

Yeah, exactly. Every step of this I've felt horrible after the league does/says something. Then when actual facts emerge, things don't seem so bad after all.

Better to wait a bit before reacting to yesterday..

the NFL knows they have the nationwide popular side of tearing down the pats in whatever way possible.........if they fail here, they will be back....and eventually succeed

the NFL is the only league with a hard cap........and it is done in the name of PARITY

in the last 15 years, the pats have been to the AFCC 9 time and the superbowl 6 times.......in the NFL's eyes, it is time for them to be pulled away from the trough because what has happened is not supposed to happen. this was never about brady, that's just where it wound up........I'm not even sure if Goodell is the one at the root of this one......praying for a mole to surface to rat on a group of owners pushing the agenda.......

The only thing Goodell has been interested in here is using this case to regain public opinion and support from some of the owners that doubted him after the Rice debacle.

He knows fans of pretty much every NFL fan base wanted to see Brady and the Patriots punished; Goodell coming down hard would have made him more popular with them. He also knew that he needed to regain some respect and trust after how he has handled (and been overruled on) recent disciplinary issues.

This has been one big self publicity stunt. When he loses this battle he should have no choice but to step down.

Someone should turn this into a movie. So many twists and turns and plot lines. NFL has cared more about drama than sport anyway. Might as well rename themselves NFE.

Brady offered EXACTLY what Wells asked for, the response was BUT HE DIDN'T GIVE THE PHONE!!!

During Wells' press conference he specifically said he didn't want the phone, so why does it matter if the phone is on Mars, destroyed, or in a drawer somewhere. Answer is, it doesn't.

People are stupid. They fail to realize that when a celebrity gets a new phone they will destroy the old one because they don't want anything leaked to TMZ. Goodell and the NFL are idiots. If Goodell gets run over by a truck i will celebrate

Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely

Goodell wanted so badly to make himself and his office look like the best organization in professional sports.

What actually happened was far from it.

Goodell used his power so absurdly and poorly that he does not deserve it moving forward

I'm not sure that this is the complete problem. I don't think they would care if it was a team that they approved of, is Pittsburgh, Green Bay etc., but this is every New Yorkers nightmare! Not only did their whole Parcells fiasco backfire, the Pats have the GOAT QB who is everything they tried to make Namth out to be yet never was.

I think it has everything to do with it

the league has always been about parity.......teams get good, players leave to get paid, then they have to rebuild......all over the course of time of a typical rookie contract or when you have to pay your QB. the pats have been more consistent over 15 years than any team BEFORE the cap era......yeah, same coach, same qb, but it's still 15 years.......too long for the parity lovers, and I can guarantee you that 15 other teams in the AFC would love some more parity

that's the only reason the front office would want to negatively affect one of its teams
