Patriots sign Tarell Brown

Well, we signed a recently starting-caliber CB and we all got to have a roundtable discussion about coffee - I would say that makes for a good day.

I think the question is more, did his foot/leg injury in Oakland that landed him on IR, slow him down enough at his age (in nfl years -a seasoned , not yet senior, citizen) that he can't keep up. If not, he could be at least be in the 3-4 man 'starting cb' group. If he's too slow, then those game smarts he has won't be enough .

Spare me the hyperbole. I never coined the signing as "shocking". Reiss's statement merely piqued my interest.

A starting corner he may have been in the past, but it gives me pause for concern that he has been on the market this long.

I hope he comes in and contributes, and I agree that perhaps the injury played a role in him being available hitherto to today's transaction.

And I personally am not that surprised that a guy who ended the previous season on IR (sent to on either week 14, 15, or 16?) might take a while to have rehabbed enough to show a team he is worth signing at a pay scale he is asking for. I note it clearly said this is a 1-YEAR deal (read: prove-it deal) . So all in all, as many others said, good camp fodder that may pan out-no down side to the signing. But also too many unknowns to get real excited either

I hope you're right, Gumby. There is so much uncertainty with the defensive backfield.

People here seem to be underrating this guy simply because he has gone this long without being signed. But based on opinions/analysis of those who have watched him and are familiar with his play, he seems like a very solid CB.

I can't understand why we would sign someone who was available. He obviously couldn't be good.

He's started all but three games played in the last four years. Why wouldn't he be able to do that here while we sort out young or recovering type players. I'm happy as hell, we're going role playing CBs anyway, I'm guessing.

Not sure what whining posters were expecting to be available.

I believe I heard on sirius nfl that he was playing with a broken navicular bone in his foot until they finally shut him down.

Case Study: Treating A Football Player Who Has Exacerbated Foot Pain When Making Cuts
A 16-year-old high football player received a referral to our office from his athletic trainer. The patient had pain in his left foot that had been present for three weeks but denied any trauma to the foot. The wide receiver said his pain was exacerbated when making cuts or coming out of his route.

Upon performing the physical examination, we noted no swelling or erythema over the dorsum of the foot. However, he did have point tenderness over the central aspect of the navicular. Hopping on the affected foot reproduced his pain.

Plain radiographs were unremarkable. We subsequently obtained a technetium labeled bone scan, which demonstrated increased uptake in the left midfoot. A MRI demonstrated a stress reaction within the central third of the left navicular.

The patient wore a short leg cast and was non-weightbearing for six weeks. After cast removal, the patient wore a walking boot for an additional two weeks. He resumed jogging eight weeks after the initiation of his treatment and was able to return to football later in the same season with complete resolution of his symptoms. The patient remained pain free at the most recent follow-up visit.

Cornerback Tarell Brown had a visit with the Patriots in May and he says he’s also heard from one of the teams the Patriots beat in the playoffs last season.

Brown told Alex Marvez and Zig Fracassi of Sirius XM NFL Radio that the Ravens are part of a group of four teams that have spoken to his agent about bringing Brown on board for the 2015 season. Brown didn’t share the identity of any of the other teams.

Brown also said that he’s almost fully recovered from the broken navicular bone in his foot that he played through for almost all of last season. Brown suffered the injury in the fourth week of the season, but remained in the Raiders starting lineup through Week 15.

Hmm. So it would appear that the Pats probably always wanted him, but didn't move to sign him until they were comfortable with his recovery. I believe he made two separate stops in New England for visits, so seems as though they were keeping tabs on his foot situation, and finally felt good enough about it to pull the trigger.

I can live with the team starting any combination of Brown, Fletcher, Butler, Ryan, McClain, Roberts etc. Ty Law and Mike Haynes aren't walking through that door and I'm fine with the money the team gave McCourty. I'm curious to see this cake baked as it appears the Patriots have an interesting mix of skills and capabilities at the CB position.
