2008:

Hobbs
Wilhite

I repeat

Hobbs
Wilhite

11 wins with Matt Cassel....and Hobbs/Wilhite at corner.

2004 playoffs:

2nd year Samuel
UDFA Gay
Troy Brown in the slot

2011:

McCourty/Arrington/Moore.....

This year's team has ZERO CBs who've shown/indicated that, as of the end of 2014, they could start at CB. This has never been the case here before.

2011 was pretty piss poor. Not that that's saying very much for this unit.

As for Brown, camp competition. Nothing more, nothing less.

2011 turned out piss poor because McCourty got exposed. However, going into the 2011 season, there was a whole lotta joy in Mudville about him as a CB.

The thing I like about Brown the most is not his talent per say but the way he plays. He in many ways reminds me of a smaller Brandon Browner in a good way.

He grabs, hits hard, attacks, is dirty and plays with attitude. It seems he bumps and grabs every play and dares the ref to call them all. I don't mind that. I like how hard he hits. I think his ball skills are decent and he plays both man and zone and was sometimes left alone deep 1 on 1 with bigger players but he did not look over matched.

I just hope if we keep him he can energize our back field with that same attitude. You need someone like that back there IMO,

Anothet option.
The team is a bit better today.

Hard to get excited over free agents available a week before training camp. But good news! Maybe a little excited.

That's really good to hear. Hope he makes the team. Based on that description of his attitude, he would be a very interesting addition.

According to the stats at PFF, which we debate but are stat-based, objective, and create some baseline, Tarell Brown was rated (tied) #24 CB in 2014, based on fewest yards allowed per snap. He had 16 passes defensed, which is a high number, so he was being thrown at.
On paper, the best CB on the roster.

He doesn't suddenly make the secondary great but he doesn't make it worse. Good pickup of a player who has had an OK career.

I'm all for creating more competition at the CB position, there doesn't appear to be much separation there so it means everyone will need to fight their absolute hardest to pull ahead of anyone else. This is the best case scenario for the worst position group on the team. There will be fight.

Am I supposed to be excited for a corner that went unsigned until just before training camp?

If he was that good he wouldn't be a FA this late in the offseason.

Butler
Brown
Ryan
Roberts
McClain

We've seen much worse in the BB era imo.

Fletcher?

People seem to be underestimating that guy. He was abused last year because he wasn't put in a position to succeed in Philly. He was pretty good up tot hat point - but seriously, how many CBs in the NFl can hang 1-on-1 with the receivers he was asked to cover, and no safety help?

And unlike another poster on this thread who shall remain nameless (he's got me on ignore anyway), I disagree about whether or not any of the people on this team have shown they can start at CB - both Fletcher and Brown have shown that.

People always do this whenever a JAG is signed. "According to PFF, his testicles had the 14th most amount of pubic hair on them!". Brown is what he is: TC competition.

Not booking Super Bowl tickets, I would guess, but at least a little excited, perhaps.

We often assume that all contract/roster decisions are made rationally. For all we know, the problem is that Brown was looking for money that no one wanted to give him.

While I tend to agree, I do have a nitpick. I believe that Ryan has shown that he can be starter in a zone defense.

BB is using his "Throw a bunch against the wall and hope a couple stick" method. We've seen it all before.

The obvious hope is that players either rebound (i.e. Fletcher) or grow (i.e. Butler) and become starting level CBs. We'll see if it happens, and we'll all hope that it does.

I think people are sleeping a bit on Fletcher. Not to say he's going to be great, or anything, but with help he could be serviceable at least.

Admittedly I feel this way mostly because unoriginal had previously made your point re: Philly's awful safety play/leaving Fletcher on an island against a murderer's row of NFC WR1s.

We are a bit better today than yesterday.

Now there are four reclamation projects to add to returning Ryan and Butler.

Fletcher, McClain, Cox, Brown

I don't mean this as a negative comment. All four are experienced NFL players and have looked good sometime in the past 2-3 years. It seems reasonable to HOPE that a couple of these will be significant contributors.
