Reggie Wayne wants to play in 2015

This is overdue, and therefore, no longer needed. The team needs help at other positions and I'd rather keep room on the cap for those players that could come in later and provide depth elsewhere.

Wayne would probably be more talented then the last receiver on the depth chart that the Patriots would carry if Wayne were not here. Even if Wayne did sign, he would see a limited amt of catches. Edelman, LaFell, Gronk, Chandler, Amendola and the to be named third down back are all likely to have more catches then him if he was on roster. So if Wayne signed, then it would be a competition between Dobson, Tyms, Gibson and Wayne for the outside WR position opposite of LaFell. Dobson is probably a near lock to make roster. Tyms could go to PS, so that would probably leave Gibson and Wayne fighting for the last available spot.

What the hell could it hurt to kick the tires. He's a future hall of famer give him a chance.

Less quality reps for some of the developmental players who will presumably be here for the long haul at a position where there is enough quality depth is where I'd start. And I am really not trying to be a wise ass. It's just not needed right now.

Nothing wrong with kicking the tires on him, I guess. If he doesn't get a better offer elsewhere, then sure, bring him into camp. And in the overwhelmingly likely event that he has nothing left in the tank, he won't make the final 53. Torry Holt 2.0 type situation.

I don't think that'll happen, because I think that ultimately someone else will give him more money/a better path to the roster. But if the pats do sign him to a nonguaranteed deal, I guess that wouldn't be so bad. No real risk to it.

And I'm saying this as someone who prefers Brandon Gibson to Wayne at this point. Wayne never seemed to make it back from the ACL tear, unfortunately.

I don't see Reggie Wayne requiring a lot of cap room to sign at this point. Certainly not a big signing bonus. Marginal veterans that you invite to training camp usually get cut pre-Week 1 and then maybe get brought back Week 2 so as not to guarantee their salary. Then you pay them week-to-week if you decide you need them. IIRC, we brought Austin Collie in late in the season a few times.

I like it - but then again I usually like all these possible "signing of aged former great player" scenarios..

I can see it now, Wayne comes back for one more year, puts up a steve smith type season catching some clutch TD's en route to a repeat. Indy turns into Detroit 2.0, Irsy goes on a binge and is stripped of the team which moves to London.

I've seen developmental players like Chad Jackson, Taylor Price, Brandon Tate, Bethel Johnson, Kenbrell Thompkins, Aaron Dobson (likely to be cut soon) go through here, and frankly, it was a waste of reps that could have gone to proven veterans who could have made an impact on the offense. Even guys with low ceilings like Underwood and Tyms did/will not contribute much. Just saying, at this position, arguing for developing young players at WR who, for whatever reason, haven't proven they belong, is going to be an uphill battle.

No idea why everyone is so opposed to bringing in Reggie Wayne. Patriots really wanted Stevie Johnson because LaFell is their only real WR (traditional outside receiver) and they have no backup. They missed out a lot of veteran WRs in the offseason, and I'm thinking they just want a one-year guy who will play for less than $3M and can contribute if needed. Of course, Wayne might be thinking he would damage his legacy in Indy if he comes here, so the asking price could go up.

You can say the same thing for FA WR's that have signed here. They also have a marginal track record here of success. Donald Hayes, Amendola, Joey Galloway, Ocho to name a few.

The Chad Jackson one is still a killer. He had all the tools....Hes up there with Ocho.

At the end of the day, this offense is just plain hard and you need to be consistent and almost perfect for this QB to throw you the ball.

I'd temper the "Patriots really wanted Stevie Johnson" assertion. The guy was not going to get anywhere close to the $4.1m in 2015 he is getting in SD next year here. In this offense he would have been the #4 or #5 option which translates into ~50-70 targets a year. Thats about 30-40 catches a year...not $4m/yr money by any stretch. They wanted him but not that badly.

Not sure LaFell is an outside WR.

They missed out b/c they do not view them as a major need. If their was outstanding talent out there that was a major need they would have found a way to make a deal work.

You can make the same argument for any position on any team in the league. It's not like it's an exact science. But using that to justify bringing in an old vet with little tread on the tires is a bit weak to me. There will always be names that don't pan out. But like you, I'll list a few of the converse: Holt, Galloway, C. Johnson - all veterans people thought would contribute. Hell, there were people excited about each of these names and thinking they'd be difference makers. Again, not an exact science.

Wayne is cooked (IMHO), and it was obvious last season, though I acknowledge he was coming off injury. But if the Pats want to bring him in, so be it. I'm not opposed to anyone helping the team. I just don't see how an aging receiver who has been injured and offers very little on ST's, unlike Tyms and a few other guys on your list. I guess I'm just not part of the "sign the beast" crowd if it does not make sense to do so.

Wayne, try Denver instead.

I'd like to play in 2015 also ... screw Reggie Wayne.

I wonder if this aspect isn't exactly what still makes Wayne attractive to a guy like Bill Belichick?

We know that he's lost a step or two, but there are still some positive traits that he may bring in a limited veteran type of role.

like and respect him, would be a good vet voice with lafell.

sign the beast

they say the 2nd year after a knee surgery is when the player is really comfortable and 100% recovered, so if that turns out to be the case with him, with a salary around 1.2Mi more or less, I would be ok with this, we all know our offense is not about bombs, its about short and precise routes and ball location.

I still have hopes for Dobson, it really depends if his foot is not screwed up forever but I'm not really willing to wait another full season, I don't know how the coach staff feels about this, he will have to show up and make his way to the roster as it is for every Belichick player, but competition in camp can't hurt, if Reggie Wayne is OK that would be a nightmare for defensive coordinators, too many quality players to account.

As for Tyms and Boyce I don't think they make the roster but who knows.
