Chris Simms' "sources" on Malcolm Brown

"Lets not put him in Canton just yet" - BB on first day of training camp.

BTW, the other obvious tipoff is this:

"In fact, one of them told me, ‘Now we know what it feels like to be the Jets and get Muhammad Wilkerson at pick No. 30.’”

Those are words that would never ever be uttered in Foxboro.

What were the specifics that year regarding our draft position? Isn't that the year (2011) where we had picks 17, 28, and 33? It seems as though we had multiple opportunities to take Mo Wilkerson, had we wanted to.

As a matter of fact, he was my pre-draft guess for that year.

I have no trouble separating my dislike of Simms from the fact he indeed has longhorn and Patriots connections. I also doubt the patriots would be afraid to note the wilkerson turned out better than his draft spot.

I don't think anyone thinks Wilkerson hasn't been a steal for the Jets, it's the wording that makes it come off strange, particularly when the Pats themselves passed on Wilkerson at pick 28.

Wilfork was a gift,I couldn't believe it.

I'm hopeful that Brown turns out the same way. I was shocked he was still there - and very happy, since that was a primary need.

Of course, it makes me growl all the more about losing the 1st round pick next year.

Wilkerson is a lot more comparable, going 30th. And lots of guys with the Patriots weren't there 11 years ago when Vince was drafted. Some people just have to over think everything and can't accept a comment for what it is. Wilkerson went 30th and was way underdrafted. Brown went 32nd and, hopefully, went way underdrafted. Not difficult to miss the comparison.

You are overanalyzing a joke. You do realize that?

I hope Brown turns out to be a great player, but let's get real. No one has even hit anyone yet,

Simms was gushing about Brown right after the draft. I'm sure he's looking at things through burnt orange glasses so he's biased, but the sources are probably legit. "In awe" is probably a bit of hyperbole though. It's still shocking to get a top 15-20 talent at #32 without any injury or character baggage. They should be excited.
I have a few friends who are UT Alumns and bleed burnt orange and gush over Brown.

It's what they do. Just need to find the reality somehow.

Sometimes I think some of these reporters have a split personality and are quoting themselves as the source. Really doesn't sound like a typical Patriot quote. Normally they down play what a rookie does and you get comments like he has a long way to go.

I think that the Pats were shocked mostly that Indy ( you know the team that Jonas Gray and LaGarret Blount have run for 600'yards and 11 TDs against in the last three games) passed on him when he fell to the end of the first round. In fact, the Pats had a trade in place for that pick, and then when Brown was still on the board, they jumped on it.
I'm not going to lie. The exact moment the Colts pick was read out, I laughed... then began football arousal that the Pats may just get Brown. In the space of one season, the Pats annihilated the Colts three times. Not once, not twice but thrice!

The only way I could see this quote from a Patriots source is if it came from a new employee.

If we assume that:
  • Simms has a source or two who were very junior when he was in Foxboro and was very junior himself.
  • He's overgeneralizing from what he's legitimately been told, the whole thing makes reasonable sense.
  • He's understating the degree to which his opinion is based on Texas sources.
then the whole thing makes sense.

If a reporter claims one source saying un-Patriot-like things, I entertain the possibility that he's on the up-and-up. If he claims multiple sources saying implausible things, however, I think he's fabricating.

We've got a thread on a Chris Simms take? Really? It must be July ... please pass quickly.

We really need training camp to get here

I am certain Brown will be a better pro than Leonad Williams. Nothing about the actual players, but this just seems to be a law of the universe that the Patriots will get the better player even drafting 26 spots lower.

Sounds like something from the resumes of volin, Borges and Thomas's.

Which Borges self is the one that likes to steal other people's work?
