Edit: Does Cameron Heyward's deal mean Kiss Chandler Jones Goodbye

Thanks for the reminders. I don't know what his exact role is for sure. I'm not a hater but I feel as though he hasn't really lived up to the hype.

He's like mayo in that I suppose he's reliable but they're both supposed to be playmakers in the mould of Collins. I haven't felt like he's been able to dominate his opponent.
If you think that Mayo has only been "reliable" then I have no freaking clue what you are looking at.

In defense of Mayo, he played in 75 of a possible 80 games over his first 5 seasons, compiling 684 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions, 16 tackles for a loss, and 17 pass defenses during those games. He was reliable until these past 2 seasons.

I agree with you previous post and I am a big fan of Chandler Jones personally, but he does have some durability concerns, he has missed time in 2 of 3 years in the NFL and he was injured often in college as well. I think this is a pivotal season in Jones’s development, I do not believe we have seen the player Jones can truly be yet, and he was very raw entering the NFL and has an extremely high ceiling. The funny thing is I think the Patriots would gladly pay Jones the money Heyward received, I know I would, considering JPP had a 5 year $60M deal on the table prior to the 4th of July I think under $10M a season for Jones would be a steal.

I think the thing people do not realize is, this is why Revis, Browner, and Wilfork were allowed to walk this offseason, because the young homegrown core players such as McCourty, Jones, Hightower, Collins, etc. are going to need to be paid. When you look at the talent of Jones, Brown, Easley, Hightower, and Collins you have 5 players in your front 7 who are 25 years old or younger and have all pro level talent.

He's definitely not a playmaker. He's disciplined, reliable, leader etc. but not a playmaker.

I was defending Mayo. I think the poster meant reliable in the way that he makes the plays that comes to him, and won't miss many tackles. But he doesn't the plays. Which is absolutely untrue for Mayo in my opinion.

my bad - sorry

I think Mayo was a solid foundation for a defense, but hes not a cornerstone. At this point I don't know if chandler jones is either. Chandler been okay. I think he has issues vs the run(I don't want to hear how its because he's supposed to just rush the passer, when other guys filled in for him our run defense was better) His pass rushing skills are not top of the league elite.

It will be really interesting to see how the rookies do the next couple of years, as Chandler jones, at least to me, at this point is not on my "must keep" list.

Can anyone remember a play chandler jones made last season?

Mayo is very good in coverage, great range sideline to sideline, and an amazing tackler (perennially 100+ per year when healthy). He's probably the third best pass rusher on our team behind Jones and Collins, and ahead of Ninkovich and Hightower. I don't know what "plays" you don't see him "make," but just because he doesn't get put in the position to get 15 sacks a year doesn't mean he's merely a disciplined, reliable leader.

Fact is, when you're injured, you can't make plays. If you're going to show how short term your memory is (like your comment about Jones), complain about his health, not his ability or production.

What is the point of this thread? Are we arguing whether Jones will be playing the 2017 season for the patriots?

More so I was reacting to the Heyward contract and its implications for Jones and the Pats. I dig Jones and like his play. But add up all those edge dudes BB drafted with what Heyward just got and and I felt like even this far out you could see the hand writing on the wall for Jones' departure. Forgive me if I broke a rule about looking too far ahead.

You could also take a look at the other side of the line and say that we brought in a bunch of edge players because our other end is 31 years old, and is right around that age where a drop off can happen quickly. Or it could be because BB didn't want our ends to continue to play 95% of the snaps because they get tired at the end of games and when the post season comes. Or probably a mix of both.
