Cam Heyward of the Steelers, who is not quite as good as Jones in my opinion, just signed a deal that guarantees him $21M in the first year of the deal. I don't see any chance of Chandler getting a deal like that from the Pats at the end of this season. My guess is he'll play for his $8M in 2016 or be traded, can't imagine he'd be cut. No wonder BB drafted so many 'edge' dudes this year. If he hits on one of them then the clock starts on Jones' time in NE.

Keep in mind Heyward is a 3-4 DE. 4-3 DE and 3-4 DE are much different animals.

Can anyone remember a play chandler jones made last season?

Chandler Jones is under contract for the next 2 seasons. If he proves to be worth that kind of money over the next 2 seasons he will be paid, if he doesn't he will be free to go. This thread is premature and based on one team with a history of cap problems overpaying one of their defensive ends.

Yes, but Jones plays both really, shifting back and forth, play to play. And I think some posters are underestimating his impact on the D. He may not be a true crazy pass rusher (thus more like a 3-4 man) but he's involved and making a real difference most all the time.

I think a lot of it is because most posters don't really know what to look for. They only recognize the sacks. So when you Chandler keeps his contain and forces the runner to go inside and get clubbed by Hightower, they see Hightower tackle someone, and not Chandler forcing them there. When he gets inside the pocket and hurries the QB to make a bad throw they forget about it two plays later. I think that Chandler is a really good run stopper, which is a very nice to have in a DE. But he had that one game against the Chiefs where he absolutely stunk as a run stopper for most of it and suddenly people started saying he was bad at it, because of one game. And frankly, I wouldn't really evaluate any player too much in that game, because the whole team pretty much stunk.

Is he primetime Demarcus Ware or Peppers? No. But there is a big gap between average and DeMarcus Ware. I think that Jones is very good, and in my opinion worth $8-9M a year. Which would only be $1-2M less than Heyward, because Heywards contract was for 6(!) years, which the OP quitly forgot to mention. Off course Heyward also plays a completely different position, so you can't really compare what they earn or should earn.

I'm a fan of Jones as his ability to rush the passer is pretty darn good (especially when he's fit and isn't throwing his head back) however, if Jones walking means the Patriots retain Hightower and Collins long-term, it's an easy decision.

OH FFS, based on the thread title I thought that Chandler got busted for crack like his brother or something.

Just a horrible thread title. I thought he was injured or something terrible. Mods?

We will see. Hasn't even entered his prime yet so I think his best football is still left to come.

I try not to get to attached although it is hard. A lot of players are breaking out such as Collins and Hightower. It will be tough to sign them all but you never know?

It looks bleak right now but Revis and Hernandez will be off the books next year to get some serious extensions done.
