No clue if he actually has sources but I like the quotes :

"I worked up in New England, I know a lot of coaches, people in the front office, and basically they’ve been in awe of Malcom Brown and what he’s done through minicamp, OTAs"

“They are shocked, still, that they got Malcom Brown at pick No. 32 in the first round,” he shared. “In fact, one of them told me, ‘Now we know what it feels like to be the Jets and get
Muhammad Wilkerson at pick No. 30.’”

Simms was gushing about Brown right after the draft. I'm sure he's looking at things through burnt orange glasses so he's biased, but the sources are probably legit. "In awe" is probably a bit of hyperbole though. It's still shocking to get a top 15-20 talent at #32 without any injury or character baggage. They should be excited.

BTW, the other obvious tipoff is this:

"In fact, one of them told me, ‘Now we know what it feels like to be the Jets and get Muhammad Wilkerson at pick No. 30.’”

Those are words that would never ever be uttered in Foxboro.

That strikes me as odd as well. Is he saying the source is amazed that they got a great player late in the first round? That's hardly unprecedented, the two most productive offensive Patriots in the super bowl were selected well into the 3rd day.

Or is he saying that Wilkerson was a can't miss prospect that should never have been available to the Jets so late? If that's the case, why did the Patriots pass on him a few minutes prior?

The only way I could see this quote from a Patriots source is if it came from a new employee.

Or from someone messing with Simms. I could actually believe that to be the case.

.....or from the well-documented addled mind of Chris Simms

Shouldn't the source say:

"Now the Pats know what it was like to be the Pats and get Vince Wilfork with the 21st pick"?
There's a huge difference between 21 & 32. About a third of a round. 21 is around when Brown was supposed to go. These really aren't comparable.

I think that the Pats were shocked mostly that Indy ( you know the team that Jonas Gray and LaGarret Blount have run for 600'yards and 11 TDs against in the last three games) passed on him when he fell to the end of the first round. In fact, the Pats had a trade in place for that pick, and then when Brown was still on the board, they jumped on it.

But Wilfork was supposed to be a top 10 pick. Both were major droppers into the second half of the first round.

Wilkerson really didn't drop much. He was supposed to go in the mid 20s (many thought the Pats would take him with the pick they traded away to the Saints) and went 30.

I have no trouble separating my dislike of Simms from the fact he indeed has longhorn and Patriots connections. I also doubt the patriots would be afraid to note the wilkerson turned out better than his draft spot.

Patriots are generally pretty secure and would say when another team made a good pick IMO. Of course they could have picked him, but I don't recall the deal.

EDIT: If I read it right, we traded the chance for Wilkerso for Shane Vereen and Chandler Jones [with a 3rd thrown in]. given that the Pats judge if styles fit, that's not bad, as Solder could be a career LT Which is more important than a DE [arguable]. Since Solder came through and had been secretly playing with balls cancer...

Wilfork was a gift,I couldn't believe it.

Too bad they couldn't have ended that first round with Karlos Dansby instead of Ben Watson;
that would've been 2 gifts.

Its more important to the Colts to be able to get Luck's numbers up so they can start talking about him being the best ever ala Peyton manning than it is to have a playoff caliber defense capable of stopping the run.

Wilkerson is a lot more comparable, going 30th. And lots of guys with the Patriots weren't there 11 years ago when Vince was drafted. Some people just have to over think everything and can't accept a comment for what it is. Wilkerson went 30th and was way underdrafted. Brown went 32nd and, hopefully, went way underdrafted. Not difficult to miss the comparison.
