I loathed the 70's Raiders but you couldn't help but like Stabler. He was a true badass. Not today's contrived for the publicity Terell Suggs type. Peace to the family.

Yes, the vicious buttreaming is absolutely worth doing. Had one recently. Great drugs!

OTOH, I know of 3 people recently who out of the blue were diagnosed with different Stage 4 cancers.
The 29 year old died already just after her wedding. The 2 geezers are still here for now.

Jihadist sighted.
Is it possible to be a non-violent Jihadist in the afterlife? Having a great time with family and friends who have also passed sounds pretty cool to me...I can wait 50 years for it though..;)

The Snake's career was over before 90% of this board was born.

Yeah, and Lou Gehrig died decades before I was born........

That was the freakin' Snake.

We're talking about the NFL.

I guess the kids today just focus on Fantasy Football.

Think I'll go shake my fists at the ones on my lawn and tell them to cut their damn hair.

Can't really compare the Iron Horse to The Snake. One player was transcendent. The other colorful.

I do agree that most younger fans today do not appreciate NFL history as much as us "older" folks.

Really?????
Mother of God and all that's holy. I don't know who this was? Un freaking believable. We're not talking about Tommy Freaking Hodson here...

+1 - the Snake was one terrific competitor. I lived in Denver in the 70's and he was the Raider the Bronco fans loved to hate back then. It's a joke he's not in the HOF.

RIP Ken "the Snake" Stabler - one true Raider.

The SOB broke my heart after the sugar bear roughing call....drove em down and it was game over.

Rest in peace Kenny snake stabler.

It kills me when some 20 something Raider fan brings up the tuck rule. Both calls had huge stakes, but the winner of that game was almost guaranteed to go all the way as the Pats and Raiders were by far the most talented that year (Pats actually smoked the Raiders in the regular season that same year) AND... the tuck rule was a rule. The roughing call was just a horrible call, at a horrible time, in a game that the whistles were not pulled out of the pockets of the refs for anything near questionable.

Looking forward to the day this announcement is about Jack Tatum.

His announcement was 5 years ago and nobody wished him a peaceful rest.

We older Pats fans remember the Sugar Bear phantom roughing the passer call against Stabler and Oakland. To Stabler's credit, I remember reading a story shortly after the game in which he stated he didn't think the minimal contact warranted a penalty flag. I never held it against him as he didn't try to "sell" the play to Ben Dreith. I wonder if Dreith would have called it a penalty if it was played in Foxboro. The NFL knew the call was such BS, I don't believe they ever let Dreith ref a Pats game again. If any of you have a tape or DVD of that game, notice how many penalties went uncalled against Oakland. Almost every play on defense, our linemen were tucking their jerseys back in after being held by Upshaw, Shell, and the rest of the offensive linemen. Of course, the worst non-call in that game was the blatant interference by LB Phil Villipiano against TE Russ Francis late in the game when the Pats were trying to run the clock out or kick a FG to go up by 7. An official was five yards away watching Villipiano pull Francis' arms down from behind well before Grogan's pass got to him. As blatant an interference as I've ever seen. This would have given the Pats a first down and seriously allowed the Pats to burn clock and kick a chip shot FG. Don't forget, the Patriots gave the Raiders their only loss that year, blowing them out 48-17 at Foxboro. I'm firmly convinced the Patriots would have won the SB that year.

What may people don't remember is that on the same day as the Dreith theft, the Pittsburgh Steelers won the other semifinal game and lost both Rocky Blier and Franco Harris. That gave Oakland a cakewalk the rest of the way vs Pitt in the AFCG (24-7) and Minnesota in the SB (32-14). The Raiders finished the season at 16-1 with the only loss being a blowout to the Pats. It would have definitely been our first SB win.

Btw, one of the best of the many perks of the SB win last year was that it broke the tie that the Pats had with Oakland for SB wins. Tuck that Raiders.
