Patriots Training Camp Primer – Running Backs

Steve Balestrieri

The Patriots running back by committee will have LeGarrette Blount returning but the biggest question will be who replaces Shane Vereen's production

Here lies the career of Jonas Gray...
His entire output spent in one day...
Against the Colts, ran for 201...
Then late for practice, and he was done.

I am pulling for Jonas Gray to win our Starting RB Job. I love his straight ahead running style which should make him our Best Short Yardage Back. Legere Blount makes me nervous in short yardage situations.

I think RB will be a strength of this team. Blount is underrated and Jonas and White have had a full year with the team now. Cadet was brought in to compete for the passing back role and Devlin is a very versatile FB.

I wanted BB to spend a 2nd round draft pick in a more promising workhorse RB like that kid from the Packers. But that doesn't mean the current RB corps are not more than serviceable. I hope the OL play lights out in the running game.

LeGarrette Blount says hi.

LeGarrette Blount says hi.

Garrette is just a role player. He wasn't even a workhorse or starter in college. BB and staff just know how to use a player to their fullest potential.

Blount is ok but BB let him walk once and will do it again at the end of his current deal, if he survives training camp, he better don't sleep on that.

It's always good to remember that if Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels were not on fire against the Ravens and Seahawks we would fell short again.

Just get the short yds when its needed.....Brady will handle the rest !

I'm kind of looking forward to seeing Gaffney play this year and see how he does. I think we know what we have in Blount and Gray and if the O-line can open some holes, we should be fine. It's also going to be interesting to see how White does this year. The running back in our passing Offense is critical.
All in all, I'm not too concerned about the position.

Sort of OT ... but amongst our team's gadget plays for lack of a better term ...

I'd love to see this group run a few 3-back sets a throwback to the 60's and 70's.

Love to see a few plays with Blount - Develin - and ??? in the backfield ... HB - FB - TB

probably would get a rule change if it was successful.

Im hoping one of the young guns can unseat Blount. Not a fan of his. Aside from the colts games and a buffalo game hes been mediocre to bad. And the colts performances have been proven to be more a product of our domination in the trenches than anything blount does when Jonas exploded for 200.

We know what we have there id like to see someone else get a real chance to shine. At least split carries. Sink or swim at worst its a tiny downgrade. Blount is not a starter, best suited as rotational or a closer. Doesnt have a great past character wise either and I really didnt like the b****mode thing. Bb didnt break a sweat trying to keep him last offseason and only brought him m back after ridleys injury for dirt cheap.

Add me to the camp that isn't a big fan of Blount. Any team in the league could've picked this guy up cheap when he was on waivers last season and every team passed. Does that mean he's terrible? No. But it's a pretty good indicator that we can do better. Belichick has really "settled" recently at the RB position with BJGE and Blount (Ridley 2012 was nice). Hopefully Gray or Gaffney emerge as more consistent threats, but I'm not too excited about them either.

Brady will be our best RB.

Not worried about the RB position. I'm more interested in our o-line

Ridley was a 1300 yard per season RB and the cream of the RBBC. I was disappointed he wasn't re-signed, but BB chose to move on. The RBBC is questionable now, but the Coaches knew what they had, even as we fans never saw them in action. I'm wary but hopeful.

Cautiously optimistic is the word :)

No he wasn't, he got that stat in one season out of four.
