I see it misused all the time in sports articles It's popular with unintelligent writers trying desperately to sound smart.Interesting. I've never used it and probably never heard it used correctly.
Send this thread into Bolivian...
Did'Jah and Did'Jew ...
I am not Jah ... spiritual god of the Rastafarites I am also not Jewish ... even if I were I would still prefer Did you .... and DidYah is not an acceptable replacement for either ... Yah is a the lazy form of Jah. I also do not drive a Cah ... I drive a car and I park it ... I do not pahk it.
I live in Rhode Island ... not RowD'eyelin ... I also dot not only speak indoors ... Speakin' ... when talking I am speaking. Yes I get mad like others do but I am never wicket ... isn't that a bat in Cricket? Oh ... don't ask me Ayuh ... I am not yuh anymore than I am not jah or jew. Also ... can a human also be an ant???????????
Hate to come across as a prig, but this erroneous construction keeps cropping up and it's driving me nuts. So, in the spirit of contributing to societal improvement, and given the doldrums between the Deflategate appeal hearing and the start of training camp, this might be a good time to implore all to consider this for your future posts.
"Could have ...", not "could of ..."
"Should have ...", not "should of ..."
"Might have ...", not "might of ..."
Etc.
Thank you for your consideration.
well played...waiting for someone to correct you...I could care less
01 ~ Personally, I believe that The Message is more important than the means of expressing it.
02 ~ For that reason, I take great pains to resist unleashing my inner Grammar Nazi.
03 ~ But I applaud this Thread, as you make an important point without personally targeting anyone.
04 ~ And it's very amusing to see that folks are actually offended at getting Called Out the slop they type.
05 ~ To those of you who are thus offended, I beg of you to consider: The occasional honest mistake or oversight is one thing. Nobody's perfect. But those of us who take the time to capitalize the beginnings of Sentences ( and in my case: other words ) and who make the Effort to present our Thoughts in easy to read, enjoyable, and painless form do so as a Courtesy to you, and when you lazily and sloppily don't bother to extend the rest of us the same Courtesy, it is actually you who is in fact giving Offense.
While I do think that this thread is a humorous byproduct of the pre-training camp doldrums, exacerbated this year by a communal letdown after the post-Brady Appeal frenzy, I have to say that I don't like sloppy language in verbal or written communications and admit that I am fighting an uphill battle on both fronts with my kids. I think I might be winning.I hate to be that guy, but posting on message boards is more of a conversational type of writing. Although proper grammar dictates that the proper way to say it is "could have", every day conversation allows for "could of". I think that is allowed on a message board.

You know what they say about the "girl next door"...YipeeAyeow Kyae!!!

"Could of" sounds like "Could've" but it's not. People are allowed to post grammitically incorrect grammar, but the point one is trying to make if FAR more convincing if you look/read intelligent. If your grammar and spelling are horrible, people just won't take you seriously.
Oh yes, and no SHOUTING!I have pretty good grammar and spelling and STILL no one takes me seriously. I can't win.
Again, well played. I can't wait for someone to correct you!People think "figuratively" and "literally" are one in the same.
