It's "could have been", not "could of been"

Interesting. I've never used it and probably never heard it used correctly.
I see it misused all the time in sports articles It's popular with unintelligent writers trying desperately to sound smart.

... and then there's tenants standing in for tenets.

I guess this means my dream of opening a store called Bilbo's Bargains in MA must die? :( ;)

" Bilbo's... Bilbo's Bahgains... The greatest little bahgains at the mall!" ® (Hmm... Did Leonard have The Accent and deliberately lose it, or is it not statewide?)

Edit: Yes, accent phasered. @ 5:26

Muphry's Law is coming to claim you all, soon enough.

Hate to come across as a prig, but this erroneous construction keeps cropping up and it's driving me nuts. So, in the spirit of contributing to societal improvement, and given the doldrums between the Deflategate appeal hearing and the start of training camp, this might be a good time to implore all to consider this for your future posts.

"Could have ...", not "could of ..."
"Should have ...", not "should of ..."
"Might have ...", not "might of ..."
Etc.

Thank you for your consideration.

01 ~ Personally, I believe that The Message is more important than the means of expressing it.

02 ~ For that reason, I take great pains to resist unleashing my inner Grammar Nazi.

03 ~ But I applaud this Thread, as you make an important point without personally targeting anyone. :)

04 ~ And it's very amusing to see folks actually offended at getting Called Out on the slop that they type.

05 ~ To those of you who are thus offended, I beg of you to consider: The occasional honest mistake or oversight is one thing. Nobody's perfect. But those of us who take the time to capitalize the beginnings of Sentences ( and in my case: other words :D ) and who make the Effort to present our Thoughts in easy to read, enjoyable, and painless form do so as a Courtesy to you, and when you lazily and sloppily don't bother to extend the rest of us the same Courtesy, it is actually you who is in fact giving Offense.

I defiantly agree w OTG, particulately on #4. By the way, I cannot in good conscience defend Capitalization in the middle of a sentence, even if you think the words are Really Important, but on the other hand, I could care less :)

I hate to be that guy, but posting on message boards is more of a conversational type of writing. Although proper grammar dictates that the proper way to say it is "could have", every day conversation allows for "could of". I think that is allowed on a message board.
While I do think that this thread is a humorous byproduct of the pre-training camp doldrums, exacerbated this year by a communal letdown after the post-Brady Appeal frenzy, I have to say that I don't like sloppy language in verbal or written communications and admit that I am fighting an uphill battle on both fronts with my kids. I think I might be winning.

I am amazed and even distressed when major web pages use improper grammar or spelling, the product no doubt of a poorly educated intern with access to the "Send" button at CNN or elsewhere. As a society, we have lowered our standards for how we communicate among ourselves to the lowest common denominator. I think that this reflects poorly on all of us.

I would agree that we all have to be careful about dictating what is "allowed' on the board, but I disagree with you and come down on the side of those who suggest that we might all try to express ourselves using something resembling correct English grammar and spelling.

I hasten to add that I never correct someone's grammar or spelling out here, because I don't know whether it just reflects carelessness or is the result of a lack of education or intelligence; my mama taught me to be more polite that that, but I do wince when I see it.

"Could of" sounds like "Could've" but it's not. People are allowed to post grammitically incorrect grammar, but the point one is trying to make if FAR more convincing if you look/read intelligent. If your grammar and spelling are horrible, people just won't take you seriously.

And for crying out loud...PLEASE let us never consider being grammatically correct to be politically incorrect. One's lack of education is not our problem! :D

I have pretty good grammar and spelling and STILL no one takes me seriously. I can't win.

Oh yes, and no SHOUTING! :)

(That was a joke as I hope the :) suggested, but I just wanted to be sure that was clear.)
