2015 Celtics Draft

First day of free agency they add Crowder for 5 years, Jerebko for 2 and Amir Johnson for 2... the roster is starting to take shape. Not as big a splash as had hoped, but lots of depth on this roster..

Stay tuned, still too many guards on this team...
Better yet, those (except for Crowder are effectively one year deals with the second year non guaranteed. So if they need it, they'll have all the flexibility back next year.

I don't think he was suggesting that Brady take the field alone

I think the point is, that Brady makes up for a ton of mediocrity elsewhere on a team, and there have certainly been plenty of high but mediocre draft picks by Belichick (as well as some true winners throughout the draft and among the UFAs)

But comparing the NFL and NBA drafts is like comparing apples and a sirloin steak

For a team like the Celtics, drafting quality players is key - they're just not going to attract free agents without them

As far as the Celts not tanking and thus missing out on Winslow, I came to feel that Stevens teaching his players to win and work together as a team was a good move long term

As the Captain points out above, they may regret not tanking given their efforts to grab Winslow

It's worth keeping an eye on

BB almost never gets to draft high, so I'm not sure what you mean. For where Ainge has drafted, he's done pretty well.

I think Ainge has done a real nice job with the team...but at some point when is he going to put the master plan in motion. we should be getting a lot better by now and im not sure how much longer this grand rebuild is going to take.

Because two years is such a really long time? It wasn't until the middle of the past season that they'd even finished stripping parts from the old team. Coincidentally (or not), it was after that point that they began to really play well. I expect that improvement to continue this year. It will be harder in the east on one hand, but on the other hand, they lost a ton of games by fewer than 5 points in the first half of last year.

Bottom line, I'm just not sure who they should be 'getting a lot better by now', given they're only in year two of a rebuild and given their lousy luck in the lottery.

When I'm talking high draft picks I mean 1st or 2nd round for the NFL and Top 10 in the NBA - so again it's not even as close as apples and oranges!

In a relative sense, given the fact that there are so few NBA caliber players in the draft, Belichick can land MANY more quality players in a 7 round draft plus UDFAs

For Ainge - or really any other team in the NBA - just the crap shoot aspect of what is essentially a one round NBA draft (at best) means that you really can't count on the draft - but that's the reality for the Celtics.

They need to make wise moves in FA, knowing that they currently stand little chance of attracting the Top Tier players, and need to get pretty damn lucky in the draft as well

And I'd say that makes the job that Ainge and Stevens have done that much MORE impressive - but I'm also realistic

The "Master Plan" is one that ultimately is dependent on good luck

I think the original point made by Captain Stone was effectively that he feels they erred in not tanking and being able to grab the guy they were willing to trade a lot of picks or players for in Winslow - which itself shows an acknowledgement of the drop off in talent from even the Top Ten to the Top 20 (certainly more extreme than in the NFL if you want to compare a 7 round NFL draft full of random quality players and a 2 round NBA draft in which most may not make the team)

The really maddening thing is that supposedly Danny tried very hard to trade with the Hornets for #9 in order to draft Winslow, but had they simply followed my advice and started tanking after the trade deadline, Winslow might be a Celtic today, either by being drafted by them or by being acquired by them because Charlotte might find that the #12 pick could still get them Kaminsky.

Seeing how much Ainge wanted him, the Captain may well be right

Potentially forever - the "Master Plan" depends a lot on luck as well as logical moves

I'm sure if Ainge could draft or sign any FA he wanted to, one could claim there's a bonafide Master Plan - but he can't - so there isn't

Amir Johnson will help on the glass, but he is an old 28; Olynyk & Jerebko are useless on defense, Sullinger has cement for legs…

- UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE -

Cs acquire PF David Lee from Golden State for SF Gerald Wallace. Both Lee & Wallace have expiring contracts, so this is basically a straight talent upgrade at the cost of $5.4M.
Lee isn't the pure Center that is still needed here like DeAndre Jordan, Greg Monroe, Marc Gasol, Kosta Koufos, or either of the Lopez brothers, but he'll help.

In a related development, C Colton Iverson has left the Cs Summer League team, who were pathetically out-rebounded last night 51-31.

Either Olynyk or Sullinger will be traded at some point ... probably Sullinger but I fail to see his worth even in trade.

I watched the first half of the Cs-76ers game on NBA TV tonight.

Marcus Smart didn't dress tonight, but James Young & all of the drafted Guards looked like absolute shyte. There is not one even half-way decent shooter among them.

Danny has completely fecked-up another draft, again.

Yeah, we'll see who's laughing soon enough.
why are you complaining about danny f--king up the draft? now the team will suk and they will be in the lottery. i thought thats what you wanted?

Well, the first 2 guards Danny drafted this year, plus the one he drafted last year racked up 54 points between them in the game tonight.

And the three '****ed up' draft picks contribute 59 points and 17 rebounds in last night's game.

It's become clear that all 3 can play and will be on the team.
