Patriots Interior Defensive Line Play Will Be a Key to Success in 2015

Steve Balestrieri

Replacing a player like Vince Wilfork is never easy, however with the players in place, the Patriots will look to be a more well rounded defense in 2015.

Right idea, wrong side of the ball. To me the most critical unit to this seasons success will be the interior OL. They will face three excellent defensive lines six times this season (AFC EAST X2) and there interior OL is going to have to hold them off or there will be real problems for this offense.

Key to success this season will be.................. correct PSI :D

You mean the 1/10th of a second it took to move the mouse a couple of inches and click the X was too tall of a task for you?

I don't actually have a mouse attached to my phone

The zoom in and touch process is a crippling one. I understand.

As for the interior DL, them and the interior OL will be keys. The secondary is going to need all the help that it can get and a ferocious pass rush will do wonders. I just hope the Easley returns to the same player he was in college.

the additions of easley, sheard and malcolm brown will be a huge upgrade. not only that, mayo's prescence will allow hightower to rush more.

The Keys for me this season are 3 things in no order.

#1 Interior DL - Easley/Brown
#2 Interior DL - Jackson/Wendell/Mason/Flemming?
#3 The top CB - Butler?

The first 2 go without saying but #3 might need some explaining.

The reason I emphasize the #1 CB is cause I think we can work around the #2 & #3 with guys like Ryan/Fletcher/McClain/ect... Assuming our #1 is competitive.

The only player who I think has a chance to be a good #1 right now is Butler. Hopefully he does and we patch work the rest and our pass rush gets there.

If those 3 things work out we have a good chance to win again this year.

I don't see a big deal in replacing connolly and wendell

OMG, a thread talking about anything else but "deflategate". How refreshing.

Nice article Steve. There are some great DL's in the division, at least on paper, and anyone "just looking on paper, would have to rate ours fourth. However that being said, personally, I think that THIS version of the Pats DL could be the best we've had in a long, long time. Here are a few reasons why.

1. The loss of Vince Wilfolk is being vastly overstated. I would agree that his leadership WILL be missed. However between his fading productivity and the changes in how the game is being played, Vince's on field production has been visibly slipping for the past 2 seasons.

2. But more important than Vince's slippage from an Elite DT/NT to "merely" a good one, are the changes to the game.

3. The Pats are now fundamentally a 4-3 team. So the NT's importance has been diminished, as well as the reliance on the 2 gap technique as our base for the rest of the DL. Now our DE's seem smaller and faster as well as the DT's. Between Easley, Brown, and Chris Jones, our DT's will be a lot more aggressive, often moving and attacking, than holding their ground.

4. This will fit in well with our LB group, which is also based more and more on speed and athleticism than the former profile of guys like big strong run suffers like Ted Johnson and Spikes.

5. Last season the talent in the secondary (mainly Revis) allowed the defense to attack the offense from the secondary. This season, that will switch to the front 7. We will attack the offense with them, while the secondary will play more zone to minimize the" big play", and be better prepared to take advantage of the mistakes the forcing unit will cause.

6. However there WILL be times when teams, like the Jets will try to take advantage of this move to smaller and quicker defenses. THOSE will be the times where Branch, Siliga, and Hightower will be key to have in the DT rotation. I believe that ultimately the Pats will end up with a 5 man DT rotation, and the #5 guy is still going to get 30% of the snaps.

Compared to the rest of the division, there won't be any big names on our front 4, but I suspect it will one of the strengths of the DL, rating only behind the LB's in importance. I believe this because it isn't gong to be about the front 4, its going to be about the front 9. Remember the lesson of the superbowl. Even a great front four, can't create a great pass rush for 4 quarters the way they play now. You NEED a front 9.

Bottom line. There will be a lot of hand wringing and whining about the secondary starting with the moment the first pass is completed. But it was never about the secondary, OR the LB's, or the front 4. It is about the defense as a 25 man GROUP and how they play together. So baring a excessive amount of key injuries on the D, I honestly believe that when the dust clears at the end of the season, the defense AS A WHOLE, will wind up with numbers in the key stats that are going to be very similar to the ones that we saw last season.

The ability of Siliga to recover from his offseason surgery will be key, particularly as we approach the next 6 weeks or so.

As others have mentioned, Easley is another player whose health will be a major focus on the DL.

I would put Defensive Line behind O-line and cb as being the most important this year. If we didn't play in the AFC East and didn't have to go up against those very good D-lines, I think it would definitely be the cb position, but considering who we have to go up against and being able to keep Tom upright, I would say those two are very close. If Tom has time, we are going to be very difficult to stop on offense.

Yup, folks have been saying this for three years. In that period, Connolly and Wendell have played very well as guards, and Connolly was OK at center.

You hear it hear first....Pats D will record the most # of sacks since the 1985 squad (51).

Is the number of sacks the stat most predictive of Super Bowl winners over the past 10 years?

Yes, it is good to come back after a week away and find a couple of threads dealing with football.

You seem to be saying that we are #4 in the AFCE in the quality of our DL, our secondary isn't very good, and that we are well coached that the defense will make up for these deficiencies.

as I said, I don't see a big deal in replacing them......since one of them is still on the roster, replacing him will mean we have someone better......both were solid......we have plenty of solid on the roster......especially with th erookies

are they mutually exclusive or are you just being yourself?
