Volin's Sunday Football Column

Ok I finally read this column. What DeSarno is saying is that the Patriots balls and the Colts balls loss of air pressure are different from each other by a statistically significant margin. I haven't run the numbers myself but just by eyeballing them, that looks like a reasonable statement.

However, the main point of AEI's thesis involves the fact that the Patriots' balls were measured right away at halftime, and the Colts' balls were measured 10 minutes later, after they had time to warm up.

All DeSarno does is run an ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) on the numbers. He concludes something which AEI already admitted. On page 2, AEI states:

We find, as the Wells report did, that the evidence suggests on balance that the Patriots balls declined in pressure more than the Colts balls under the maintained assumptions in the report. As we will explain, however, this does not necessarily constitute evidence that the Patriots illegally tampered with their footballs.

All DeSarno is doing is verifying the first sentence of that paragraph.

Can anyone contact this Mr DeSarno and go over the fact that the Colts balls were allowed to warm longer so he can correct this?

Volin is irresponsible. He claims to be objective but is always wanting to find the -ve in every pats story.

Is he really trying to make us feel sorry for Ted Wells?

@Palm Beach Pats Fan ?
I haven't tried to contact DeSarno but what it essentially comes down to is "garbage in, garbage out."

If the data is faulty, then no amount of statistical analysis can draw any legitimate conclusions. I am not a scientist, but I would be very interested in seeing some experiments whereby 2 balls are measured, brought into the cold for 2 hours, brought back into a warm room, measure 1 right away then measure the other 10 minutes later.

I doubt he realized that his question would now be touted as evidence that the Patriots are guilty. You are right on garbage in. Also he does not say what Volin's summary said he said.

Ben, if you are reading this, and I know you are, you too can do the search on who the Wells investigation initially used to do the science of deflategate before Exponent and see why they made no mention of these other sources in the final report. Do you really think that the attachment 1, the Exponent report was submitted May 6, the same day as the Wells report?

You can also cover the question of why the NFL provided false psi info in the Gardi letter and understand that any reasonable person seeing 10.1 being falsly given would know this would substantially impact the Patriots ability to focus on prepping for the game. Only the NFL has the correct info and only the NFL gave false data. manipulating the results of the Super Bowl through the release of fraudulent data is a big story.

You are not going to build a career being a mini Felger but you might try actual journalism and investigation for a change.
You seem to be making the assumption that he can read.

I have just been through Volin's twitter and hardly anything he tweets gets any particular notice. Few favorites or responses for anything. This has to be the highlight of his career. Funny thing was Kravitz a couple days ago tweeted out a January story about the Patriots fumbling statistics. The story was refuted in January but Kravitz sent it out in late June. It is like in the Cain Mutiny where Captain Queeg was trying to relive his glory days by insisting that the someone created a key to the pantry to steal the frozen strawberries despite being told the stewards had eaten them. Queeg and Kravitz both knew the truth but are despreate to relive a time when they were in the limelight.

Yeah, Kirk Minihane wanting to maim Faurier last week in the 10:00 am crossover provided the only reason to ever like Minihane.
Or vice versa!

I heard that. Sounded like a bit more than the typical faux-argument to generate ratings, but I don't know. Got to say my money is on the ex ballplayer if they ever throw down.
Yeah, speaking of guys who other media people hate, Minihane seems to -really- get up people's backsides.

Apparently, he just got suspended a day

I was just coming in here to post that

Volin is now writing headlines for Associated Press stories, apparently:

LOL...

aquaman!

Plus, the original PSI measurements were not recorded. The times of the half time measurements were not recorded. It was a pretty incompetent sting. It sounds like Kensil had no idea at all that PSI would shrink during halftime.

Either that or he'll run off a batch by hand...:)
