OT: Broncos attempted to trade Manning to Houston?

Here is the most ironic thing to come out of this story. Ben Volin actually has the nerve to retweet someone else calling out the originator of this story for reporting an inaccurate (allegedly) story.

From his Twitter:

Seriously, I would think Volin would avoid getting involved in any story where the originator is accused of reporting a false story.... Unless of course, he is the one who wrote the story.

MCI.

Wow, and we thought Mallett was worth nothing?

He wasn't worth anything, which was apparent when we received a conditional 7th round pick for him in a draft that wouldn't occur for 2 years down the road. To take it one step further, the Texans brought in Brian Hoyer to be the starter this year and paid him 5.5m dollars AAV to do so.

We don't know if the rumors about a possible Peyton Manning deal are true or not, but there are many factors that would go into such a deal. One is the fact that the Broncos may have wanted a first round pick.

Sorry, bud. My fault.

I thought you were claiming that Mallett was so important to the Texans that they were able to pass on Manning.

I figured it would be a straight up swap.

ESPN Headlines:

Week 1: Manning is back!
Week 4: Broncos clearly the class of the AFC.
Week 8: Manning, Broncos inside track to one seed
Week 12: Patriots crush Broncos 38-17, Manning 3 picks fading
Week 17: Colder, Broncos wild card city destination or Peyton?

Bill O'Brien might be interested in one year of Manning to get to the first round of the playoffs. Mallett, Hoyer and 3rd stringer Tom Savage are not an encouraging group that will help them take the next step. The problem with Manning is that he turns the ball over a lot and is not just slow, he's glacial when the pocket starts to collapse.

The Texans defense is special, though. They need a QB who doesn't turn the ball over and can take advantage of field position and the turnovers their defense will amass. They should be looking for a Matt Hasselback-type player while they look for their franchise QB.

If Elway could dump Manning for something of value and get the Texans to swallow his salary, that would be a huge step towards the future. Brock Osweiler, the Broncos' backup, has a year as the understudy under his belt and could be a solid NFL passer.

Add another report to the "Yes. Yes, they did." column:

SportsRadio 610 has learned that the Broncos and Texans, did in fact, have “very preliminary” talks about the Houston Texans acquiring the future Hall of Fame quarterback this offseason, according to a source.

The talks between the two teams occurred before Peyton Manning signed his restructured deal with the Broncos and before the Texans signed free-agent quarterback Brian Hoyer. If the Texans were to acquire Manning they would have had to restructure Manning’s deal and SportsRadio 610’s source says the money in Houston would not have been as high as the $15 million Manning got from the Broncos. That $15 MIL was a $4 million paycut for the quarterback.

It would be interesting, for sure, Manning playing 50% of what he is capable would put the Texans as playoff contenders immediately. That division is a joke and the Texans play in a dome right? It would be good for everyone involved apart from the Broncos that would be drafting in the top 10 next year.

No one is ever going to admit trying to trade Manning. Whether the Broncos did or not, they only lose now if they admit it and have a T'ed off Manning going into the season.

It wouldn't matter. Manning is a real team guy.

Did anyone believe that? :)

FWIW they gave Mallett $3.5M a year.

it would be at least 9 games in a dome, plus a game in Florida... compared to Denver, it probaby would have been better for ole noodle arm Manning

Fair compensation to secure his services for one more year while they continue to assess him, although one could argue that it may be on the higher end of the spectrum.

I'm just pointing out that one received about 5.5 AAV on a two yr deal, while the other received 3.5. I would expect Hoyer to be the favorite unless Mallett shows enough to take his job.

Manning is one of the all-time greats at QB...and it brings me great joy when the Patriots beat any team he plays for. If I were Elway and I felt Manning was going to tank in 2015 like he did in the 2nd half of 2014....I would try to trade him as well.

When I hear "Peyton Manning" and "first round pick" in the same sentence, it makes me think of the playoffs, not the draft.

The Houston field is among the worst in the nfl from what I understand. Real grass on trays that are able to be slid in and out of the stadium. The system creates odd "empty seems" capable of catching a foot. Wes Welker anyone? It has been common knowledge that fields is **** (not sure it would really affect Petey Pie), however I'm not sure if they have taken steps to fix the problem.

I think we'll have a better feel for how much he sucked in the second half when we have a bigger sample size from the upcoming season. Until then, my concern would be that injury may have played a fairly large role in his second half difference, particularly in the last 4-5 games.

Manning led the team to a 6-2 record in the first half of the season, and a 6-2 record in the second half of the season. As a matter of fact, despite his injury and difference in play, they actually won 5 of their last 6 games, with the only loss coming during the last minute of the MNF game vs. CIN when he threw the pick six while driving to take the lead late in the game.

No doubt he was a different man in the last 4-6 weeks of the season though. I'm just wondering how much is the real "noodle armed" Manning, and how much came from injury and attempting to mask that by running the ball a lot more? I'm guessing that there would be plenty of head coaches and GM's around the league who would be more than happy to have him as their starting QB for another year or two, despite some downward trends and recent limitations.

Wouldn't you?

I think there are a lot of variables in there that makes attempting to answer this question futile--and I understand that you're speaking somewhat tongue in cheek.

If I were Elway and I thought there may be a decent chance to wipe a large chunk of cap money (I believe it was around 20m dollars before they agreed to the reduction), along with a second round draft pick, then yes, I would have strongly considered it.

That said, they'd have dropped dramatically in terms of strength and ability to reach the postseason by doing so. Perhaps it was a squeeze tactic to reduce his salary?
