Gary Myers in today's NY Daily News: Good analysis of a hopeless mess

I am of the opinion Brady has long planned to be a part of management once his playing career is over. Given the team friendly contracts and the public mutual adoration between player and owner, I believe Brady's future in the organization has been predetermined ages ago. Bob eventually steps aside, Jonathan becomes CEO, Brady slides into the President's chair. (I don't see BB pulling a Fat Tuna and becoming a suit).
I mention this because, if my hunch is even partially correct, Brady has to consider his deflategate course of action in grander terms than just as a disgruntled star. He may become one of them one day. Management with NE.....or maybe an ownership stake elsewhere.
Brady is a competitive guy and I don't see him needing to occupy is future free time in the celebrity/broadcaster role....at least I hope not.
Just thoughts

No. If any of that were true Kraft would not have thrown Brady under the bus.
He did that at least 3 times now.

Depending on how it all plays out, it might get to the point where the only way for Goodell to save face or his job would be to overturn the whole suspension, fine and draft picks. He could have Vincent be the well deserved fall guy fall guy and show his impartiality with his willingness to overturn despite the $5 million price tag. But Goodell is too stupid, arrogant and self righteous to do so.

On Brady's personal lawsuit, he'll probably lose because he's a public person, and the courts do not like to overrule an arbiter that the employee's union agreed could hear such cases.

You're conflating two issues here. The "public figure" rule only sets a higher bar for defamation lawsuits. It has no effect on any suit related solely to the punishments.

Also, Brady's team will likely be arguing that there are no logical grounds for the suspension. Effectively, the argument will be that no reasonable person could look at the data in the Wells report and actually conclude that it is more probable than not that Brady knew what was going on, since there is no evidence that anyone suggested deflating balls after the refs were done, or that Brady wanted footballs below 12.5 PSI, and the science does not lead to the conclusion that the footballs were intentionally deflated. [He could also argue that the refs are incapable of actually monitoring the football pressures properly, since somehow those balls that were supposedly reinflated at 13 PSI came in over the legal limit at the end of the game.]

Moreover, even if they have him dead to rights on the non-cooperation issue, it's already been established that that isn't a suspension-level offense, period.

If we were in our local bar, I'd take $100 out of my wallet and say put your money where your mouth is and let's both hand the cash to the bartender to hold it for however long it takes to see who wins.

I don't see Brady doing anything in an "organization" after he retires. He strikes me as an entrepreneur and not a 9--5 guy clocking into an office every day.

An ownership stake somewhere? Maybe one day, but he and Gisele will have to grow their wealth into the Michael Jordan range for a few years for that to happen and that's not going to happen to the degree Brady would need if he's pulling down a pay check as President of the Pats or any other NFL team. Even the top GM's don't pull down much more than two or three million and that's a fraction of what Brady is earning on his investments, so why would he take an office job.

I think it's far more likely that he and Gisele build something together. She's one of a handful of people who is known globally by her first name alone.

But, you might be right, which is why it would be an interesting bet.

Good points all around. Goodell is in a bad place, legally.

Any lawsuit that links lost future wages due to defamation, as we saw in Jonathan Vilma's BountyGate matter ( http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...ilmas-lawsuit-against-roger-goodell-dismissed ) would likely go down in flames, but even in that case the judge harshly criticized Goodell and the NFL for the fundamental lack of due process in a much more serious matter.

Brady/Bundchen net worth right now is 440 million. Brady is at 120 and Giselle 320. They easily have enough for ownership stakes.

I haven't read NY Post or News since this D'gate BS came out week of SB. Myers is a flip-flopper and a rabid BB/Pats Hater. When Pats won super bowl this year Myers was all over papers & SNY Sports TV show saying how Brady now has past Montana and is GOAT. Then Well's Report comes out and Myers says Brady & Pats SB Win should have an * next them, Brady is a Cheater etc etc etc.

not disputing thatn but a link to your source would be appreciated

Everyone getting their hopes up again, theres no pressure on Goodell, there is no tide turning our way. I started a thread on the tide turning back when the report came out, I was wrong. Our only solace will come through federal court.
Not much hope in this article.

I posted it because Myers lays out the alternatives so clearly.

If Goodell doesn't exonerate Brady, Brady takes him to court, but to exonerate Brady, Goodell has to admit he was wrong by wasting $5 million on the Wells report. Ergo, he can't exonerate Brady.

If he tries to wiggle out of the fix he's in by clearing Brady of any misdeeds in Deflategate but tries to dock him two days for not turning over his phone records, when the precedent is a $50,000 fine to Favre, Brady takes him to court.

Myers ends the article with a final sentence that is a non-sequitur that suggests that he's he's just throwing his hands up in frustration at the hopeless mess this has become.

So, yeah, this is going to Court.

That's low....? I'm sure I'd seen a financial mag story some time ago reflecting somewhere around 800 mil.

$5M to Goodell is just a months wages. I still think he drops to 2 games and this ends up in federal court where a judge appoints a neutral arbitrator and NFL loses. Goodell is used to that scenario playing out.

There's an actual reported fact in that article --

Brady made his case Tuesday when he was the first to testify and answered questions for two hours. He stuck to his story that he had no idea of how the footballs tested under the 12.5 PSI limit at halftime of the AFC title game and that he called, texted and met with equipment manager John Jastremski the next day to go over plans for the 100 footballs that needed to be prepared for the Super Bowl and not to concoct a coverup.

That reminds us that the ball preparation is significantly different for a Super Bowl than another game:
  • It either has to be finished a whole week before the game or else carried out at facilities far from Foxborough.
  • It's for 4X the usual number of balls.
Yeah, that's something for the ball prep guy and the QB to talk about.

Now, I'm sure Brady also asked him about the flap, and got some kind of answer. But that doesn't mean the flap was more than 5-10% of what they talked about, if even that.

I know Gary Myers and the NYDN are basically Pats haters, so to see an article that's at least somewhat logical about this is amazing. I'm sure they'll revert to form soon.

Still, the interesting thing is that we all know this month-long delay between hearing and judgement is basically to allow Goodell to get a feel for public opinion and let that drive his decisions. Having an article like this in a NY rag should at least get it on his radar.

Brady is lying. Hes not being truthful. Hes not telling Wells and the NFL Execs what they need to know. This whole thing is his fault. The NFL needs TB12 to admit to something. Maybe since hes been telling the same story for 6 freaking months, it migh tbe time for ....

1) Waterboarding
2) Torture by needles under fingernails
3) Sodium Pentothol
4) The Iron Maiden

yeah, thanks. that's the same one i found when i looked myself. hard to evaluate its accuracy since it has no details, but whatever the right number is, it's no doubt a whole boatload of money!

definitely confirms my earlier post; guys with net worths in the half billion dollar range don't go to the office 9--5 unless there's an upside that's several multiples of what they are earning on their investments just be getting out of bed in the morning. if they really are worth in the vicinity of a half a billion, they're earning well north of 25 by doing just that.

it would make a whole lot of sense for Brady and Bundchen to monetize their brands and build something together...it would also make a whole lot of sense if they just decided to stay home, take care of their kids and routinely jet off to a beach or villa that catches their fancy.

Gary Myers almost had an orgasm when Deflategate happened, he was so happy. His articles just fanned the flames of hatred towards Brady/Pats. I believe he was also saying Belichick should get suspended even though the Wells report exonerated him.

Myers is a first class imbecile. I met him in person and he's a real *******, you can see the look of entitlement and holier than thou in his face.

It may just be that his few remaining brain cells kicked in, and allowed him to see past his hatred and realize the Wells Report is a sham. The hatred will be back, trust me. He can't help himself.
I agree i can't stand the ass hole, i no longer read his tripe. Hes one of the worst.

Bon Jovi is bad enough, we don't have to go Iron Maiden, do we?
