True but a more sensible commissioner would have never let it get to the "The Deflator and Dorito Dink" stage. The inquiry should have been "can we safely rule out weather related causes?" (clearly they couldn't) instead their approach was "how do we get around the weather related explanation?" So they fished around until they came up with something that looks insinuating (even if vague and out of context).

The problem here is we have a commissioner, with no legal training, playing judge and appellate court. . . and sucking pretty badly at both. And, to the point, it was pretty damn stupid to consent to any agreement giving Goodell this kind of authority.

In the words of Nancy Kerrigan........WHY????

Throughout this entire ordeal, I just do not understand the motivation for Goodell to screw with the face of the NFL - a man whose entire career has been above reproach. Why is he doing this in the first place??

Maybe it's all about trying to get back at BB for making the Ravens and colts look as stupid as they are, fine, but why try to destroy Brady's reputation in the process?

How is that in any good for the shield??

I just do not get it.

And now, when it is clearly evident that his multi million dollar report is a joke......he sits there and does nothing. Rozelle is turning over in his grave and Tagliabue is kind of enjoying watching this punk ultimately destroy himself - I have no doubt, in time, Goodell will get what is coming to him.

And of course the truth is out there but none of the mainstream media care to run with it because they have already tried and convicted NE and Brady anyway.

So many why's so few answers that make sense.

It's good for the "shield" if Goodell, Kensil et al are actually crossdressers and need to protect their "shields"...

Here's one..Deep down, he's a Jets fan and has been since he was a kid. While he puts on airs about being impartial, he is a fan of one of the 32 and it must kill him that their biggest rival not only has 4 Championships in 15 years but that their coach resigned as the Head Coach of his favorite team after one day....
That spite and a nebulous desire for "parity" despite the fact that cream will always rise to the top....must irk him on a daily basis. What better way to get back than a trumped up claim of cheating??

Seems simple to me. It's good for Goodell and the Law of 32. Goodell needed to show that he was in control of the integrity (Ha! good one) of the NFL after the Ray Rice fiasco.
No different than pounding the Saints to show that the NFL cared about the players' health after the Concussion issues raised by former players and saying the NFL hid the effects of concussions from them.

The issue is with the Wells report. Goodell is right to accept the findings of the person he hired to investigate, but then must listen to the appeal. He literally hired Wells to tell him what happened. The fact that Wells did an awful job is not really on Goodell, EXCEPT that we do not know how Wells was directed and influenced by the league. That is where it gets out of whack.

My point is simply that a process that appoints an independent investigator and then accepts his conclusion as fact is not flawed, wrong or ignorant.
Where this went of the tracks is that it was not independent, it's conclusion was terrible, and Bob Kraft gave up instead of presenting the other side.
We can insert whatever conspiracy theory and bias we want, but IMO, they only diminish the strength of the argument. To say the Patriots are hated and people in the league are out to get them, or to focus on Goodells incompetence or bias only distracts the discussion from the facts, which are that the science proves nothing was done to the footballs. No one is ever going to exonerate the Patriots by accepting bias and conspiracy, but they can very well be exonerated by a study of the facts. Claiming that the rule is stupid or there is no advantage from deflating similarly distracts from the basic point, that nothing was done. Arguing that its OK to break a stupid rule, is arguing you did it, and no one should care. That is not appropriate in this case, A becuase nothing was done, and B because the issue isn't the gain, but plotting to break the rules in order to gain an advantage. It matters little whether you actually gained one not. Being bad at cheating doesnt mean you didn't cheat. Again, people harping on those things are taking the discussion away from where it needs to be, which is exoneration.

I dream of one day living in an enlightened society where science is not politicized and the masses can be persuaded by reason and logic.

Some times there truth is simple. Goodell and his henchmen have a long standing bias against the Pats and for the Jets which has been shown by his actions many times since 2007. Kraft has been his willing accomplice in the destruction of the Pats reputation since then. Saying it sounds like a conspiracy does not change the facts in the least. Unfortunately the well has been poisoned to such an extent nothing on earth will change the minds of the public outside New England and Kraft through his pathetic supplication to the biased POS and his so called partners has revealed his total lack of support for the team and its fans.

I prefer "The facts prove nothing wrong was done" to trying to convince people that there is a plot to get us.
It plays much better.

The problem is that public opinion outside New England about the Patriots was set in stone in 2007 when Kraft capitulated rather than fighting for his coach. This is just another episode with the same result only with less justification. Take it to the bank, there will be an another attack only aimed at BB. All the while, Kraft will be bending over thanking his partners for the shafting he is going to receive for the benefit of the League

In his own words, Goodell was a Colts fan as a kid. Baltimore Colts.

Hopefully opening night the Steelers lose communication between the coach's booth and sideline so Bob can assume his natural position.

Despite coach Tomlin remembering that he forgot to turn his headset on Wells will assume he actually did. He'll find a text referring to a Patriots' employee as a **** blocker, **** obviously meaning coaching operations communication kiosk. Case closed!

But he is no longer a kid and his first employer holds a special place in his heart...how else can you explain the slap on the wrist for tampering?

Merely responding to your statement

he's a Jets fan and has been since he was a kid

Thought, considering the Colts and Baltimore conspired to create our current mess, it was relevant.

Please don't forget the very important fact that the Patriots had the outright gall to accuse the Jets of tampering.

Once again I find one of those rare posts that I want to reprint, put a nice frame around and place on a wall at my home for all to see. Thanks AJ.

There are two kinds of Pats fans that bother me most. The fans who are intelligent enough to know better but still want Brady to prove that he didn't do something wrong (probably the only thing that young man isn't capable of doing) and the fans who want to know why he didn't cooperate by giving up his phone. When they throw Brint "Junk" Favre into the discussion I want to puke.

Oh, sorry, but there's a 3rd kind too. Those are the Pats fans who are still behind Kraft 100%. I can't agree with that until something changes.

The only thing this fiasco has shown us is which Pats fans are which

What's been interesting to me since this started is that there's a whole different feel to the coverage outside of your late-night comics and your "Today Shows" - they like this because they can all pass footballs across a table and say "oh, yes, I can tell the difference! You're right!" But this report has gotten the treatment it deserves, first and foremost by the Pats themselves before The Great Cave of 15. That got others thinking, and you've seen critiques of the league*'s position, most recently the timely NYT release of the AEI report.

In 2007 it was "the Pats are pure evil." This time it's more like "Well these guys are shady. But (among some) this report is bullsh1t."

It's pronounced enough that the NFL*N's own reporters were covering the appeal by saying that disproving the Wells report, which was done earlier by AEI, was not on its own enough to affect the outcome.

So we know the Pats have never been "innocent until proven guilty" because the NFL set a lower bar than proof. Then they didn't meet their low bar; it was at that point "guilty until proven innocent." Now their public stance is that proof of innocence is no reason to revisit punishment.

I just think Goodell must have the ego of a Trump type. In answer to your question, he feels he's above any standard of judgment, like he is a self-contained judge, jury, executioner, and appeals court. He's made owners richer - that's all he has to do to have this power in his own little fiefdom.

He's gambling that no matter what happens, the worst that can happen is he has to say "oopsie" and give back something that wasn't his to do in the first place (in this case the Brady suspension.)

I'm not sure court will be good for Brady or the Pats or us as fans, as I've said a few times. But I think it would certainly be bad for Goodell. I think that drives a lot of the emotional oomph behind rooting for Brady/the NFLPA to take this through the courts.
