BB and Coach K agree on this and many other things.

Absolutely.

The only challenge to that philosophy is sometimes work ethic can be taught and learned...sheer talent can't.

"Quote from a College of BB"

Those damn vowels. I hate it when I totally miss the "a" and the "u".

I'm sure there is a bottom line to work ethic before it is becomes a cancer. Maybe work ethic can be influenced and then realized by oneself rather than taught.

Don't believe it.

Why?

Coach K. had a 5 star recruit this year, with a 1 star work ethic.

He won the national championship.

Everyone considers this 5 star recruit to be the most skilled and talented player in the draft. Scouts though are warning: the kids work ethic is far below par, and in the NBA you have to bring it every single night. Which is why this kid, with the best talent in the draft, is not going to be the first pick.

Yes. Not sure I'd associate a lack of work ethic to being a clubhouse cancer though. Can be linked but can be different as well.

Okafor is an immense talent who gets by on talent.

He can be Tim Duncan if he wants to.

But hes looking like hes Rasheed Wallace.

Yeah not quite the same for college b ball. I'd probably take the five star recruit honestly.

I agree on the Coach K part. On the bringing every night in the NBA couldn't disagree more. Seems to me half the players mail it in any time it's not a prime time or "big" game.

“We like to say that dependability is more important than ability,” Bill Belichickism....

Lots of similarities between Coach K and BB. Both have a military background that has strongly influenced their coaching philosophy. What is amazing is that Duke has such high academic standards for athletes (compared to schools like Kentucky or UNC) yet Coach K has still found a way.

BB has a lot of respect for Coach K: one of his first interviews after the SB was with Coach K :

From BB to Coach K:
ust want to congratulate you on your great success in breaking the 1,000-win mark. I’d really like to just borrow a couple of those wins from you next year, Mike. You won’t miss them. It’s only a couple out of a thousand, but I could really use a couple at the right time.

Lots of similarities in the irrational hatred for the both of them too, from people whose teams have been spanked by them.

I think Edelman sums up the quote perfectly.

There's a strong element of bs artist in Krzyzewski. He says stuff to the cameras and puts on an act that isn't a reflection of who he is at all.

The quote that started this thread is one perfect example. It is purely a PR act, meant to build his brand. There are hundreds of 2 star recruits that would show up at Duke with 5 star attitudes, but he consistently brings in 5 star recruits who have anything but that. In other words, he always has the option that he paints in that quote, and consistently chooses the 5 star with the mediocre attitude.

That's one way he is fundamentally different from BB.

English literature - a thorough examination of Strunk & White's edict: be concise
History - a study of the evolution of the kicking game, 1904 to present
Physics - proper use of the Ideal Gas Law, with an in-depth review of the Wells fiasco
Art - defining the third dimension through the tele-strator; elective: the joy of film study
Nutrition - the wonders of the avocado, with a special guest lecturer
Physical eduction - fitness through penalty laps

Yep- The more McDonalds All-Americans you land the better your chances are of going to the Final Four.

There are two approaches to high caliber college basketball that create a continuum. On one end there's the "one and done" factory that puts little energy (or none, in some cases) into developing more than basketball skills and NBA draft-ability. Kentucky is the poster child here. It does produce NCAA championships in abundance. The roster turns over nearly completely every two years.

There are a host of other programs that put a lot of emphasis on getting their kids a good education and developing their character. Wisconsin and Virginia are the two best examples of that in the past few years.
Their players stay for at least three years, and most of them graduate.
