Minicamp 6/17

I would be fine if Roberts were good enough to play 20% of the reps this year. That's fine for our 5th CB.

Agreed, but that's not where the reports were heading. It was more of a "he looks like Butler last year so why can't he be counted on as a rookie?" forgetting that Butler wasn't counted on for all that much early on.

All reports say butler is tearing it up in minicamp.

Malcolm Butler’s two-week benching didn’t slow him down, as the young cornerback shined during the second day of New England Patriots mandatory minicamp.

Butler, wearing a sleeveless shirt and one long red sleeve, made multiple pass breakups during Wednesday’s session. Butler is seeing a ton of snaps in Patriots team drills, and he’s making the most of them.

The Patriots were high on Butler coming into the 2015 offseason, and it doesn’t appear the Super Bowl hero’s place on the depth chart was affected by his late arrival to organized team activities.

Good to hear positive things coming out of mini camp about our corners. I'll wait until I see how they play against opposition though. lol

I'd still take it!

The bigger issue with the comparison is that Butler, for all his camp optimism and the monumental play, still played less than 20% of the snaps and needed half the year to climb up to regular rotation. How would people view him if he had to start from day one?
To be fair, he'd have to get past Revis and Browner to get on the field.

In the "base" defense he would. Nickle is the new base.

Right,
It's not like they're facing top QBs in mini camp.

Of course, but that isn't really the point I was making. It was more of a would more snaps have exposed more of Butler's weaknesses? type deal.

Apparently BB liked what he saw. Last day of mini-camp was cancelled.

That's sad. I was hoping for more Patriots news tomorrow. Now we need to wait again a day early.

If they cancel a day of mini-camp can the practice time be used in full camp or later in the season?

The Short answer is not really. You can tweak practices a bit one way or another but they need to follow general guidelines dictated from the players association which have to do with maximum work loads and each section (mini-camp, camp, regular season, ect) has its own self contained rules.

I'm sure one of the hacks in the Boston media will spin this that it wasn't a cancellation but the NFL taking practicing time away from the Patriots because of BB holding Malcolm Butler out but it was done quietly as a favor to Kraft for accepting the bogus punishment for weather and science effecting air pressure.

Not surprised about Butler. People were irrationally down on him because of a few bad plays early last year, obviously forgetting that he was a rookie. The guy started playing well later on and had a great 2nd half in the SB (not just the catch at the end.) Which is exactly what you want to see from a rookie - progress.

He's going to be a very good CB1 for us.
