OT: MLB St. Louis Cardinals Hack Gate

Turned on Turd and Loser on Comcast. Zero talk of Cards, zero. It's all about the Blackhawks.

We spent two weeks hearings about deflated football 24/7. Frauds.

Not really a big deal unless the Cardinals let the air out of the Astros computers after they hacked them.

still waiting for talk of "cheating" and "asterisks". Only on hour 3 or so though

Watching OTL now though and they (the writers they have on) keep making references to this being something that goes on between nations and is in the news and relevant today (the idea of hacking) but Jayson Stark just went on about how the Cardinals are using data on an everyday basis and have been for a while.

edit: Patriots name has come up once but nothing really on it. Have a real feeling this thing won't get to the level of deflategate or even close to it even with federal investigators being involved. While its a much easier narrative to spin, I don't think Baseball or the Cardinals evoke enough interest in the average american's mind to lead the national news with.

If and when they do talk about it, it will be about comparisons to the Patriots. So don't look forward to it.

Fwiw: this Cardinals scandal is potentially WAY worse than all the things the #Patriots have ever done ... COMBINED

It's always been amazing to me how the Cardinals have always managed to keep the stink of McGwire off of their franchise.
Because the media (local and national) were complicit in purposely looking the other way during the steroid era. Sure occasional stories filtered out over the years....."Why are so many MLB players wearing braces on their teeth"......"How are MLB players developing visible jaw muscles"....."Is Barry Bond's ego bigger than his head"....
...But the reality is baseball reporters like their cushy jobs and didn't want to upset the apple cart. Fear of losing access is a powerful tool.

It is kind of sad that that statement even needs to be said. Considering the Patriots "cheating" is really:

1) Filmed a guy standing in front of 80,000 people from an illegal location
2) Outsmarted an opposing head coach with a new and innovative formation
3) Been falsely accused of tampering with equipment

Then yes, I'd say violating federal law is a bit more serious than the above.

Check out the responses to Coles tweet. Hilarious. Taping walk through practices etc. People are idiots. There's one chick on there ..blue something..that on her personal page she has a tweet saying Travis Kelce can be better than Grunk (meaning Gronk I imagine)

Delusional.

the cards have giving belichick new things to think about!:D jk of course..

seriously though if this was the patriots it would be the biggest story ever.

The Cardinals are Bob Costas' team & Joe Buck's team, therefore no punishment of any significance
whatsoever will be given to them.

Their focus is the whining factor ...stroking the fellowship of the miserable.
Not many around here will whine about this story.

So the Patriots became a standard in cheating, a reference where you look for when comparing frauds and cheating by different organizations. Well done Goodell, I hope karma gets you in the next corner.

Agree on Buck.

Costas is an interesting case. Bottom line is that he's a Yankee fan. But you really can't tell that from his broadcasts. Normally I would say he's one of the best in the biz at putting that bias behind him. But really he's a baseball purist more than he is a Yankees fan; the 1950s Yankees (the team of his youth) is his team rather than the Yankees in general. He was never really a Steinbrenner Yankee guy.

The Cardinals are considered the closest to an old-school baseball team out there. They succeed the old way - not with sabermetric data but good old fashioned scouting. Fans who are considered "classy" as in the days of old. The "America's heartland" team of the 1950s American culture, one that doesn't have much money but succeeds in spite of it. Building their team through the draft (ignoring that McGwire was actually a trade, one of the shrewdest in MLB history). It's no wonder that Costas has sort of latched onto them. I'd call him a Cardinals' sympathizer more than a fan of them.

That whole "Americas Heartland" team just when down the toilet.

Been DVRing F&M just to see if they discuss it. They did for about 5 mins so far and said it was extremely bad. Extremely bad. And they've moved on to the Blackhawks again. They won't discuss it much because it will highlight how embarrassing and ridiculous the Pats coverage was.

This is huge. Something similar happened in Formula 1 racing and the fine was $100M http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/13/sports/13iht-prix.5.7500107.html

I was wondering what the penalties might be. Since this was done by front office personnel, it wouldn't apply to the manager or players. A post-season ban would be insane. Taking away draft picks is possible, but it doesn't have the same impact as basketball or football. I'm pretty sure the MLB draft was last week and no one really noticed. A massive fine is certainly on the table, plus whatever criminal proceedings the FBI decides to go with.

In a nod to Game of Thrones, they might also consider having a MLB official follow each batter to the plate the first time through the order, ringing a bell and chanting "Shame, Shame, Shame" for a month.

I think a $50 - $100M fine is in order. If this all turns out to be true, anything less would be a joke.

I want some capital punishment...
