Deflating deflategate --[Mod Edit] AEI Opinion Piece in NY Times

Same as Neil DeGrasse Tyson the Jets fan who was also caught in a bold faced lie in January.

At least DeGrassie Tyson retracted. He should have stuck to astrophysics and stayed away from thermodynamics. http://tinyurl.com/mzmlear

Reading the 2nd quote, I'm astounded (NOT) to see that Neil DGT got it wrong not once but twice.

His incompetence is showcased by the excellent AEI study.

EDIT: It appears I made a harsh rush to judgement because as Palm Beach et. al. pointed out...

So his (N DGT) second attempt was only in error due to a misplaced trust in the validity of the Chris Mortensen lie.

Yep. Someone paid for this research and it wasn't the NFL.
Not sure if folks are aware of this but the same two guys- Kevin Hassett and Stan Veuger who wrote this study also authored the "Bountygate" study.
Either NFLA or Winston & Strawn (Kessler's firm) is my bet

So where next to throw some money?
  • social media generation - people can be hired for very reasonable money to generate a slowly forming but large and natural looking wave of social media cross posts about this study, and related
  • an article on the science behind the hoax - how was the bad science put together and why?
  • an article on the leadership of the NFL - who they are, their connections to teams, and the fact that their interests align with P&L statements, not with "integrity of the game"
All of that would continue to setting Goodell's emotional state on edge, which I think is key. It is to their advantage to keep the pressure on, so he and the NFL leadership feel more and more boxed in and worried. That'll lead to more stubbornness and more mistakes.

It seems to be a common mistake by scientists, to weigh into pop culture issues that have a scientific component and be led astray.

This guy is incredibly intelligent, and not just scientifically. What a demo of how the scientific method is so fragile when ego or passion get involved.

Yeah, I'm not sure how this became the popular thought here, but it was 100 percent wrong from the get go. I'd be surprised if more than 1-2 owners weren't on board with the thought that Goodell has done a good job; after all, it's all about the almighty dollar, and he's helped to increase league revenue and the global brand in dramatic fashion. Hell, just the concussion settlement alone was an enormous victory for Goodell and the 32 owners, as I believe that they all pitched in somewhere around 25m dollars per team. If I remember correctly, they were concerned that it could've been at least 10 times that amount.

Unfortunately, I think the only time that he was really anywhere near "on the ropes" may have been after the Ray Rice fiasco, and even then I'm not sure if it was anything close to what's been suggested.

So 25 m x 32 = 800 M. That's already wiped out in year-over-year projected growth, '14-'15:
http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/...Leagues-and-Governing-Bodies/NFL-revenue.aspx
The NFL is projecting revenue of more than $12 billion for this year, a roughly $1 billion increase over 2014, fueled by TV money and better-than-expected local revenue.

As for the growth of the sport... I remember reading in the articles on the last CBA that the issue was how to divide up the $9 billion in annual revenue. We're at $12b projected in 2015.

Goodell is on record as saying it should be a $25 billion sport by 2027.

So in support of your point: He's a giant douche who is doing - thus far - exactly what he's been hired to do.

It doesn't matter to the owners whether the game changes to the South Park "sarcastiball" rules, as long as it generates the revenue targets we're talking about.

It wasn't long ago when these egomaniac owners just owned sports teams to say they owned sports teams, without actually thinking they'd be cash cows. They'd even put up with losing money as a write-off year after year.

Times have changed. Whatever is good for gate, regardless of the fairness or unfairness of how you get there.

I would love to see Greg Bedard confronted with this report. In his MMQB article, he made a rather stupid comment about the science and how it supports that the balls were tampered with. In the follow up mailbag, someone pointed out the flaw in his logic which is what this report largely addressed. Bedard responded by smacking the guy down with more of his own stupidity. Bedard needs to be called out on this.

But how hard can it really be to sell the NFL? Fantasy football pretty much does that for him.

Don't get your hopes up too high. Even if there are 100 similar reports, Goodell is still going
to suspend Brady for four games. Goodell believes that he has the authority to levy
punishment with no evidence whatsoever. When the Federal Court eventually forces
him to appoint a truly neutral arbiter, the decision will be overturned and the suspension
lifted.

Regardless of this new report, Benedict Bob already raised the white flag and conceded guilt.
Rodger: "How can the NFL overturn Brady's sentence when the NE owner has already accepted the extreme punishment handed for these serious rule infractions."
Bob's surrender legitimized the Wells report. Brady has two up hill battles....vs the Wells Report and his owner's willingness to accept the Wells report conclusion. Krafty's words may have questioned the reports conclusions, but his actions were in harmony with the league position.

IMO I think they'll wait till after the arbitration hearing to start the PR campaign.

If they like what they get, they'll stay quiet. If they don't it'll get very public.

If Brady introduces the AEI article as evidence in court, then the NFL can demand AEI reveal their report's sponsor, which may be troublesome.

One of the authors of the report was on 985 on Friday night and said no one sponsored the report. They decided to do it on their own.

I will defend Bill Nye and Neil DeGrasse Tyson in one respect. They were making their assessments based on a bogus report by Chris Mortensen that the balls deflated 2 PSI. I think with the real data, I bet they would back AEI.

Granted neither has set the record straight since the Wells Report came out. So screw them.

Or quoth Professor Proton, "Back off, Bow-Tie!"

This clip is really the level the "deflategate" childishness has come to.

Bedard showed his stupidity by suggesting they should take away each team's ball that lost the most and least PSI and compare. What he doesn't understand is that it skews the comparison more because you would be taking away 50% of the Colts' balls and only 18% of the Pats' balls.

Comparing 4 balls to 11 balls already skew the data because we have no idea the PSI loss of the 4 Colts four balls measured vs the eight weren't. Taking away two balls from each team only makes the data even more unreliable.

Reading the 2nd quote, I'm astounded (NOT) to see that Neil DGT got it wrong not once but twice.

His incompetence is showcased by the excellent AEI study.

The first time NdGT got it wrong by making a sophomore mistake: not using absolute pressure.

After he fixed this, he actually did the calculation completely correctly. He fell victim, however, to believing the Chris Mortensen lie (that 11 of 12 footballs were deflated by at least 2 psi).

NdGT declared that there was no way that the ideal gas law alone could account for a 2 psi pressure drop because it only gets a little over half of that (about 1.15). Of course, the actual drop was not 2 psi, it was 1.01 psi (logo gauge) or 1.39 psi (non-logo gauge).

So his second attempt was only in error due to a misplaced trust in the validity of the Chris Mortensen lie.

AEI doesn't do these types of studies without someone/something issuing a grant to fund them.

We can speculate for days who might be picking up the tab for this.

I'll start with the NFLPA.

This is just a PR ploy for AEI - which only needed 16 pages and common sense to debunk a Wells Report which has a conclusion hinged on the "assumption" that the "best recollection" of the lead official is that he used the gauge that showed that NO DEFLATION OCCURRED

Any costs associated with this were more than enough in terms of good PR which will keep them top of mind for future studies.

They knew that the last thing Goodell was going to do is engage Tagliabue to contract with them again - so they weren't getting this business anyways - but now have reminded readers that they debunked Goodell in Bountygate and this is an even more simple, clear cut case of a Commissioner who appears more incompetent each year.

Can we get this irresponsible **** off the sidebar feed, please?

Trying to claim one of AEI's corporate sponsors is the Kraft Foundation.

First off, it's NOT even related to Robert Kraft whatsoever. It's the food-related corporation.

Secondly, as a "reporter/journalist" you better make damn sure you're 100% correct before putting anything out there. Instead, he puts it out there first and THEN tries to find out if true or not: https://twitter.com/BenVolin/status/610147402771746817

Lastly, even if it was related to Robert Kraft - it's not like he paid for the report the way the NFL paid millions to Ted Wells.

Jeff Howe confirmed its not Robert Kraft's company. Therefore I expect tomorrow to wake up to ESPN: Kraft's company sponsors Deflategate Rebuttal
