Deflating deflategate --[Mod Edit] AEI Opinion Piece in NY Times

on the title, it is a

New York Times invited opinion piece by the authors of an AIG independent study

I am looking forward to the day that people everywhere realize that this was never about the facts. The NFL doesn't care about the facts, other teams don't care about the facts and neither do their fans. Facts don't matter in this case so we should all stop posting articles citing facts. We will never change public opinion on this and the Patriots will never receive those draft picks back, nor the $1,000,000.

I know that this is wishful thinking BUT if this gets to court and it is recognized that the Wells report is fraudulent and therefor Brady's suspension is dropped, wouldn't Goodell face pressure to drop the fines and penalties as well?

This is NOT a NY Times story, even though it is being publicized there. It is an American Enterprise Institute study, published and reported by the NYT. That's even more important. Essentially , we have a Right of Center Think Tank and a Left of Center Newspaper saying that the Wells report is ********. As I've said a couple of times already and as I will repeat again no doubt, this is a "Holy ****" moment for Goodell and the NFL.

You are mistaken in automatically assuming the NYT is ENDORSING the AEI opinion piece.

Any more so than the Boston Globe "endorses" Jeff Jacoby's opinion pieces.

They are merely publishing opinion pieces from agreeing and differing viewpoints. Nothing more, nothing less.

For the integrity of the game, if the team Punishment and Brady's suspension was predicated on an offense that didn't occur, and this has been provem by the evidence, then the only proper course of action is to void them all.. But it will never happen becuase Goosell is in too deep, the ' sunken cost fallacy" and it will take a court to do it and right this wrong.

Have you ever tried to get an OpEd piece published in the New York Times, especially in the Sunday Review? The one time I succeeded I felt like I'd managed to climb Mount Everest barefoot and naked.

The Times doesn't publish any opinion pieces, especially pieces from right wing think tanks like AEI, unless it thinks they have a lot of merit. Trust me. This is a big deal.

It would make him look stupid enough to warrant being fired.

It would be like Columbus coming back to the Queen of Portugal to report the world is round but being dismissed because her highly paid in-house adviser insists it's flat.

He's already looked stupid enough to be fired before framegate emerged. He's not going anywhere. Our society is truly shameful. That's all I have to say.

This is the most significant development yet in the war to get out the truth.

Talk about a double-whammy for Wells, Goodell and the NFL! The report was released by the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute on Friday and is the subject of a feature article in the left-leaning New York Times Sunday Review (available online to subscribers today). No one else out here seems to have picked that up yet.

Goodell himself came under attack from the left during the Rice and Peterson debacles. In many ways (both subtle and obvious), his supporters at that time tried to portray Goodell as a martyr to "political correctness."

Now, the AEI, a major voice of the "center-right" (more right than center to many of us), has completely trashed the report he will be defending 10 days from now. Even if your politics trend "center-left," as do mine, the AEI is respected across the political spectrum for its scholarship and integrity.

This is a serious problem both from the perspective of science and educated public perception for the NFL and Goodell. It is also a major embarrassment for Wells. Couldn't happen to a nicer group of people, IMHO.

And, BTW, events like this don't happen by accident. Some powerful people with serious political "pull" made this happen. The AEI and the New York Times don't combine their efforts on very many issues.

I am sure the authors love the publicity they get from opining on Football instead of economics. That being said, you are absolutely correct that both the NY times and the AEI [and these authors in particular] are highly respected and should be regardless of how one perceives them politically.

There are plenty, in fact, way too many, ideological hack outlets in the media these days whose every product deserves scrutiny. These two aren't in that group IMO.
This is essentially the same thread as is the NYT thread...

My comments are essentially the same, this is all well and good, but there needs to be a bigger story regarding the rampant corruption in the Commissioners office and how this initial information was promulgated. There were very selective leaks to select mediots... so the news could be spread and decisions were all made before the following Thursday..

In reality this whole matter was not a big deal, Goodell lost control of the sitz and it completely got out of hand.. thus his staff essentially backed him into a corner. Then the mediots just followed along.. there is not smoke here, there is no fire.

As sloppy twinkie fart breath, now working at WEEI knows, timing is everything in the big story.

Somebody somewhere is working this ans waiting for the right moment to drop the bomb. You're talking about a career making article if done right.

Not all Democrats and Republicans are stubborn enough to make their ideology a priority to over their business interests.

I'd submit that if Kraft had a befriend a Republican to get Brady off the hook and get his team's draft picks back he would do it. We all know how Bob likes to reach across the isle.

Kraft probably has more Republican friends in business than otherwise. I'm just saying you don't have to look for some conspiracy to find a ton of people of all political persuasions that would love to do a multibillionaire who owns the greatest football team in America, a favor. On top of that, he's a world class shmoozer.

I agree.

If he were willing to take two games, he wouldn't have hired Kessler. He will take the League to court and force Discovery under oath from League officials as well as officials in the Ravens and Colts organizations along with players from across the League.
If only this were true.

Kraft didn't even put up a fight.

He hugged and kissed Goodell and asked " can I have another Sir?"
Agreed. And the draft picks aren't coming back no matter how many people threaten to huff and puff and blow Goodell's house down.

if brady and kessler manage to blow goodell's ****ing house down I'd throw in a 2nd rounder

I don't see how it's possible for Goodell to use the AEI report to refute a report he paid millions for. It's just makes him look even dumber.

Former MLBer Pedro Guerrero was accused of a crime, and his defense in court was that he wasn't smart enough to have committed the crime.Maybe this is the tack the Omissioner takes?

http://www.complex.com/sports/2014/08/dumbest-crimes-sports-history/

"Sport Played: MLB
Year: 1999
Crime: Got caught trying to buy $200,000 worth of cocaine in Miami

Guerrero is borderline ******ed. At least, that’s what Guerrero’s attorney claimed when he was charged with trying to buy 33 pounds of cocaine from an undercover agent. His attorney said that the four-time MLB All-Star and co-MVP of the 1981 World Series never finished 6th grade in the Dominican Republic and has an IQ of 70. He also argued that Guerrero could not write checks, make his own bed, or buy insurance. The low IQ defense actually worked as Guerrero was acquitted of all charges. But still, WTF?"

Right now the 'Top Headline' is "Ex_Patriot cited in accident on Mass highway". Why isn't he an ex-Bill? Last NFL game he played was for them.

That's just par for the course. There was a headline yesterday about Will Allen being charged in a Ponzi scheme. It began "Former Patriots, Giants player..." Allen was drafted by the Giants and played 5 years there. He spent another 5 years in Miami. He played in 2 preseason games with the Patriots in 2012, was injured, was placed on IR and never played again. I'm not sure how that gives the Patriots top billing when mentioning the teams he's most identified with. At least with Spikes, he spent most of his career with New England.

The draft picks ARE over.

What's incredible to me is this: Suppose a judge or independent arbiter absolutely shreds Goodell and the NFL and the Wells report, and essentially says, in a strongly worded judgment, that the NFL is full of crap and the evidence is clear that the Patriots actually did nothing wrong. Suppose that happens and Goodell keeps the punishment in place, despite knowing that the Patriots did nothing wrong.

I mean, that's what's going to happen, of course, but still. Holy cow.

its simple really, the Pats are KNOWN as cheaters and low life scum bags. So as soon as a former teammate, coach, staff, so on and so on is involved in ANYTHING negative, out come the pitch forks and torches.

BURN THE EX-PAT....

of course thats whats going to happen. All goodell is going to say, I made the judgement based on my evidence, i dont care if it is wrong.
