I think he is a great QB3 and backup should Brady really miss time, but les not pretend he is some sort of elite backup just because he's a Pat now. He's merely serviceable vet with plenty of real experience. That is an understatement. He is one of the true elite back up QBs.

What concerns me about Flynn is that he's terrible whenever he's not wearing a Packers uniform. If you only look at his career in Green Bay, he's awesome. Everywhere else and he's a train wreck.
I'll leave it at "I can't, unless Goodell wants to prove the NFLPA right."
Pretty sure you're wrong.
He was outstanding on that Sunday night game in Foxboro a few years ago.
Yep. IIRC GB was deep in Pats territory and Flynn got sacked and Wilfork recovered. Big play indeed.Their defense was pretty bad that year too. They lived and died off of turnovers. They had a bad pass rush and an underwhelming secondary.

That might have been the Dan Connolly 70 yd return game as well. Not sure though...
We're in agreement. Defamation per se is considered so abhorrent as you write, you don't need to prove damages. It usually involves accusations of criminal activity, sexual misconduct (unchaste or having an STD) or a "person was involved in behavior incompatible with the proper conduct of his business, trade or profession ". That is the one that Brady would have to prove if he were to pursue it....I should have been clearer: you need to prove damages in addition to proving that there was, in fact, defamation.
For example, let's just say, for the sake of argument, that an article in an obscure newspaper with a circulation of 75 defames a person. That person discovers the article shortly before the statute of limitations runs out; to the best of his knowledge, he had not suffered any harm as a result. He would have a hard time winning the suit and receiving damages, since he can't prove that he actually suffered any harm as a result of the defamation.
On the other hand, if the defamation constitutes defamation per se (for example, if they had falsely accused him of murder), he would not need to show that he suffered any harm; defamation per se is considered scandalous enough to warrant damages even in the absence of demonstrated harm.

Why would his absence from the team be longer than 4 games? What scenario do you envision unfolding for that to occur?
What?? Maybe he'd have to, I don't know, have some success himself as a starting QB before being anyone's 'mentor'. Testaverde had a 21 year career and started 233 games. Of the group of Matt Flynn, Mark Sanchez, Chad Henne, Matt Hasselbeck and Matt Cassal, Flynn has by far the lowest QBR over the past 8 years. In fact, it's the lowest of the 28 QBs who have played at least 50 games during that time span (per espn). He's the closest thing they could find to the 2006 Testaverde they brought in to mentor Cassel.
Its a scenario but I don't see that happening."Listen Tom, you can't sue the NFL!, I'm an owner, and if you sue the nfl its going to look back for the other 31. If you try and sue the league we are going to have to let you go Tom. Rodger told me if you sue the league then i wont be allowed at his cookout and saturday tom, please tom you are like a son to me don't sue the league!"
Brady sues the league,
Kraft forces BB to cut him.
Kraft releases a statement that It was because Tom was hurting the "team"
Sounds like insurance but BB has carried 3 QBs before, even 4. That could be the planning from the beggining with Brady starting the season at 38.
