I hear you Ashley, but I don't see a highly talented CB out there right now. I do see a highly talented LG, though, and I'm all for making the team better. Outside of extending our young talent, I can't think of a better way to use the resources than signing top talent. Blowing millions on an average CB doesn't make sense to me.

True, I hear ya Ross, I'm all for improving our roster and I have no doubt that he would help our Offensive Line and hopefully be a good mentor to the rookies that we just drafted. I wish we would see one of those talented corner's from another team let go, but I guess just not enough of them to go around....you see how quick Arrington and Dennard were picked up after we let them go.

How can you not love that....I just hope our 11m goes out to secondary help instead.

LOL. The dude is a character for sure. I wonder if that will play into things...

I mean, say the secondary is only serviceable. What's a good game plan to cover for that? A) Protect Brady long enough for him to build a lead, then B) run the ball hard, and when the other team has to pass-pass-pass, C) hit them repeatedly with a stable of rotating, fresh and nasty DEs. Mathis goes a long way toward helping with parts A and B.

Just as an FYI, Mathis has been at his best in a zone blocking scheme.

Well I looked at CBs that will be free agents in 2016 and 2017. The only guys that would be so costly we couldn't afford both him and Mathis are either on a team that will almost certainly not trade with the Pats or guys that are BAAAAAADLY overpaid. Most guys have pretty favorable cap hits, much like Talib in 2012.

You upgrade when the opportunity is there, and the likelihood of a team just releasing a top corner is pretty much slim to none. I agree that it would a Brian Waters like signing and you do what you can to bring him in. That said I won't be surprised if Denver offers him the most and he land there.

We got cap space, might as well use it on a good player.

I doubt he'll sign here because if the $11.5 over 2 years was upsetting to him, he's looking for Logan Mankins money and we would have just kept him if we wanted a highly paid LG at the end of his career.

Would love to see him here on a 1-2 year deal ala Brian Waters at the money he was making in Philly

Yeah, I would imagine that you're right, unless Mathis leaves money on the table to choose to come to NE.

I have a feeling Belichick may agree with your thinking here. I know that I do. Mathis would be very nice, but as @Ivan said, I bet he goes to a team like DEN who is willing to pay more money.

While having a rookie is far from ideal, I would guess that the position could still be added to with some type of vet signing. Hell, maybe even a guy like Connelly comes back for one more year? I know it doesn't seem too likely at the moment, but I'd never count out a mid/late summer vet OL signing.

Brian Waters 2011 2.0. Sign. The. Beast.

Brian Waters signed a 2 year/ 3 million dollar contract. While I understand where you're going with the comparison, I'm just not seeing the value type of deal in this case.

As a matter of fact, I'd be surprised if Evan Mathis wouldn't consider ONE year of Waters' two year contract an enormous discount at 3m dollars per year. I'm expecting it to be somewhere in the 4m dollar range, just as a guess.

depends on what they see with what they already have.......having a road grader like mason forces opposing DL's emphasize run defense more on early downs which in itself creates pass pro......mason did what he was supposed to in college....his pass pro capabilites rarely needed to be tapped, so that's an unknown......given his physical traits along with his work ethic, I think he will be fine in pass pro

I'm also optimistic about Tre Jackson. He may need some conditioning work but his history with Stork can only help him.

absolutely......between the 2 of them there is a gob of potential.......I'm optimistic with the group as it is

While there is a lot of talk about players who want to "go to a winner" and "get a ring" toward the end of their careers, the reality is that with the last years of their NFL earning power looming, they are far more often about getting as much cash as possible before riding off into the sunset. And I'm totally OK with that value system.

If Mathis was unhappy with $5M a year in Philly, there's little chance he going to pick NE over another team that will pay far more than the Pats have allocated to the OG position.

Hope I'm wrong, would love to add to the depth on the OL, as long as the extensions to the defensive studs aren't compromised.

The rumor is that he was unhappy with 5M/y in Philly but what about the other side, maybe Philly wasn't that happy with his actual salary? They released him instead of trading, no one was interested in trading for him when FA opened, he might not have that strong market, but as a matter of fact Denver is in position to overspend a little for his services, they don't have much choice.

I think there is a chance BB offers him a good money if he wants Mathis. He spent a high draft pick in a QB last year so he don't need to spend the bucks when the unexpected happens like this year. I don't know how much Flinn is going to get paid if he makes the roster but let's forget his signing for a minute. If we don't have Garopollo in place and take the chances to go with Brady plus a jag, sh.it like this deflatefake happens and we are ****ed, I still have confidence in making the playoffs starting 0-4 but let's not pretend it's going to be easy. So in order to keep the team competitive he would have to spend money in a quarterback. He doesn't need to do that. I don't think BB uses some sort of compensatory mechanism but the money he would have to spend in a QB he can spend in Mathis giving Garoppolo or Flynn a stone wall making their job easier. If Brady indeed gets 4 games we will have to go heavy on the running game.

A 1 year deal with incentives makes sense from the Pats perspective, then pass the torch to Jackson or Mason.

He will probably want a lot more than 1 year though
