Why did the Eagles cut him btw?

Because he is black -LaSean McCoy

Actually he is not, but I just had to go there.

He was making noise about the Eagles putting a new contract on the table and then taking it back

@caplannfl: Knowing Mathis a bit, winning is important to him. Has a few good years left, so he could surface with a playoff bound team. We'll see.

Pats, Seahawks, Broncos, Colts. (packers/cowboys OLs are loaded).

Hopefully he realizes Denver is done.

He was scheduled to earn $5.5mm in 2015 and $6mm in 2016 - but was unhappy with his contract.
Was the #2 rated guard by Pro Football Focus in 2014.

Cut Gilbert and Wright today..

Replace them with Flynn and Mathis?

Well looks like they are halfway there, report is Pats signed Flynn. Can't wait for all the mediots to spin the Flynn signing as the Patriots thinking that Brady will lose his appeal and miss games.

Hopefully we'll steal him from them.

If he wants to win a SB, going with Brady as opposed to Manning is a no-brainer.

...one can also say that the Pats SB hopes are damaged as they have lost their #1, #2, #3 CBs, top run stuffer and their QB might miss the first 4 games of the season.

I'm trying not to be a homer 24x7 :D

They won the SB last year despite a horrible first 4 games. Went to the SB in 2011 with a much weaker defense.

No question that if he wants to win, NE is where he should sign. I know it obviously sounds like the "homer" thing to say, but history is the best predictor of future events. Our track record of always being contenders speaks for itself.

Best chance to win is either here or Seattle. Depends on what he wants and which of those 2 teams want him more if he is determined to win.

Combination of age and cap hit. He's still really good, I would be pumped if the Pats got him. Drafting Jackson and Mason makes upgrading at guard less urgent, but anytime you can make it so that you aren't relying on rookies to produce, it's a good thing (looking at you, 2013 WRs).

Flynn seems like a fine enough choice as a QB3, especially when you assume the improvement in the overall depth chart. I'm happy about the signing, if true.

Like you said, I'm sure it will create more speculation about TFB's situation, but either way it seems like a decent move on paper.

I agree. They are still the class of the AFC with DEN, BAL and Indy behind them.

Personally I think the offense will be better than last year's. They won't be babying Gronk to start the year. LaFell will be fully integrated. I think they will have the guard position addressed more completely than last year. Flemming, draftees, etc.

The defense .....I think the front 7 is very much improved. Not sure about the CBs. Could be serviceable. Could be above average. Could be an epic fail. Just don't know.

While winning is important, seems like Mathis is really focused on the money. I bet if the top teams offer more than that Pats he'll go there. Just a gut feel.

Yeah, one would think that NE would be a consideration. That's of course, assuming that BB wants to explore the option.

As usual, another contending team like DEN could step up and offer more money, which makes the past couple of months' talk moot.

There were unknown guys at LB and K today though reportedly. So it seems like those holes were filled. But then, I don't know how they signed Flynn. Maybe those two others were tryouts.

I love Mathis...he is a Warrior...but we need mo D-FENSE help then on the O-LINE.

There is no doubt he would be able to come in and help our O-line plus with the addition of him, it means our toughest competition(Balt, Indy and Denver) wouldn't get him. I just wonder if it would be using our resources wisely as I would prefer if we use it for the secondary.

I am probably one of the biggest Shaquille Olajuwon Mason fans on this board, and I think Tre Jackson will be a steady, consistent mauler.

That said, sign this beast. There's no guarantee a top corner will become available.

Well if a team cuts a defender rated as the 2nd best at his position, we can debate who to sign. Until then, I say improve the team.

And it's OK to disagree. Their is only so much $ you can throw around to FA's. IMO...it's more important for the Patriots to spend that $ later on the secondary....then an offensive lineman shiny object today.

When the opportunity to fill a position of need comes around, you shouldn't ignore it because you have needs elsewhere.

Their are words of wisdom there. It will be interesting to see what the coaching staff decides.
