Bill Leavy, the NFL referee who is best remembered for his admission of making two big boo-boos in Super Bowl XL in Detroit is being taken off the field this season and will be bumped upstairs to a supervisory role in the league’s officiating department.

While nationally, Leavy is best known for admitting he “kicked” two decisions in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh’s 21-10 win over Seattle in Super Bowl XL, Patriots fans might remember him for something else.

Leavy was the official in the now infamous rain game at Gillette Stadium on Oct. 16, 2014. That was the contest the Patriots barely held on and won, 27-25, when Chris Jones blocked Nick Folk’s field goal attempt on the game’s last play. During the investigation of Deflategate, it was revealed that Tom Brady was upset that some of the footballs were over inflated, leading to his alleged demand of team staff to make sure that his footballs are better prepared in the future.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say the NFL is trying to cover something up.

preparing for the legal battle, they are protecting the ref who could have ended all of this during a jets game by seeing the balls were over inflated to 16 psi.

NFL*

Unbelievable that Big Ben in two separate Super Bowl wins was given touchdowns on a run that came up short and still passed a challenge.

The NFL seems to be fixing things.

If integrity of the game requires the ball be between 13.5 and 12.5 then how is it right that over inflating leads to a promotion and under inflating a suspension?

Goodell*

thats why

Maybe Leavy had the foresight to over-inflate as he knew it would it would be humid. Because he knew that saturated gas (according to the Ideal Gas Law) decreases in volume, he was ahead of the curve.

The NFL needs experts and he is one of them! :p

is this a cover up or simply payment for services rendered?

The NFL is morphing into a criminal syndicate.. money buys silence.

it would seem the NFL needs someone or something to monitor the NFL.

seems a impartial independent investigation is needed

hmmm....naw never will happen

I don't understand this line from the article:

"Before Leavy’s reassignment on Friday, there had been no acknowledged investigation of Leavy for that indiscretion."

The first time I read it, it sounded like they are implying there will be an investigation into the overinflation of the balls for the Jets game. Since there is no mention of any future investigation in this article or elsewhere, are they just reinforcing that there has been no investigation into Leavy's crew either overinflating or not catching overinflated balls?

My question is did the NFL formally recognize that he messed up? If it is yes, why was a formal investigation not conducted? If no, why not informally inquire? Did the informally investigate?

So annoying...

This f###### league is so powerful that it just brazenly does whatever it wants without the slightest regard for integrity or the slightest worry about anyone or anything calling them on it. And you know what? They're right. There's no reason for them to fear anyone or anything.

I'm wondering the same thing about the Colts personnel testing the PSI of the intercepted ball. It's in the report, no one can claim it didn't happen and it's against the rules. Why, in the league's never ending quest for integrity, was this ignored? They couldn't send the Colts a warning letter or issue a small fine to demonstrate that the rules are important and apply to everyone.

Regarding Leavy overinflating footballs, if it was included in the report, I'm guessing Wells would claim that Leavy followed the normal pre-game inspection protocols and had no recollection of the balls being at 16 PSI. Since the NFL officials are infallible and beyond reproach, Wells would claim Jastremski and McNally made this story up and had a text conversation about it to cover their tracks. Considering that Wells spun everything about the Patriots as negatively as possible, the fact that he didn't include an explanation like that is interesting.

oh its much more easier than that.

the Colts caught the best team in the league more probably then not messing around with a arbitrary rule from the 1940's, circumvented the rules on the field during a conference game, leaked information to Mort, lost the game spectacularly, then *****ed and moaned to the league about everything.

watched the Pats win the Superbowl and then complained more

Seriously, do 10 year olds run the Colts?

Two words...selective evidence.
