Patriots To Re-examine Hybrid Linebacker/Safety Role With Matthew Wells?

Steve Balestrieri

Matthew Wells could fit in the Patriots defensive plan as a hybrid LB/S in a big nickel subpackage. He has great speed and can cover and rush the QB.

With this fuking deflategate thing I could not even evaluate our draft picks correctly.

We got some nice contributions from Jonathan Casillas in our sub-packages and on special teams. I believe Wells can fill that type of role. He's just a Will. Or, an olb who can run. Don't see him as a nickel in any packages.

Lots of Likes:
Lot of captains. Solid young men.
Multiple skills. Up, down, inside, outside, pass coverage. Speed.
Bunch of 'em.

Very dynamic D.
Movement everywhere, look changes,
unreadable if the men can get it.

Middle should prove very unfriendly to pass recievers.
Who will be willing to pay? These are large, fast men.

If they can limit basic run damage?
Boom.

Patriot Ball, first and ten...

I agree.
Blocked in FF, Opera and IE on mine.
So if the man can make a buck that is good. Pages load fine.
Does he get paid if i block it? Less probable than yes.
This bothers me. I like supporting the sites.
Prefer just regular old picture clickable ads, etc.
I click those. But because of the abuse, I run all the different hammers.

WELLS...........double agent sent in to locate and retrieve Brady phone???

6'2" 222 and a 4.4 forty? If he has any real football talent, he's lock for STs. Nate Ebner, Wilson et. al. threatened. I love using late picks on developmental wild cards like this.

Yes this guy is fast and with Brandon Browner size (i did not just make a comparison).

Freakish athlete, but would have to gain 20 pounds to be an LB. BUT, I'm excited to see what this kid can do. I really like the Pats last 3 picks. Xzavier ****son is an interesting pick out of Alabama is an interesting pick too, his first year starting and he had 9 1/2 sacks. Then the corner from Marshall, name escapes me, but he has freakish speed too. Then some of the UDFAs have some potential as well, the center from Georgia was rated a 4th round pick, Jimmy Jean, the tall CB looks to have some talent as well. Should be a really interesting training camp. Maybe we find our next Malcolm Butler.

From that highlight tape, the coaching staff had no problem singling him up in the slot and in tes, decent amount of singled up coverage at the goal line. Good job using his hands to disengage, his athleticism was incredibly apparent coming off the edge. Seems to have great ball attacking sense, forced plenty of lose footballs.

Negatives:
would get flat footed and "catch" more athletic skill players in open field (occasionally). Would let wr's get into his body on screens/runs (seemed more cognizant of a line man's hands however). Poor situational awareness, would make a great play, force the ball loose, and jump up dancing while players fought for the ball. At least 2 or 3 instances on the you tube video.

Overall, an incredibly gifted athlete, seems to have a knack for big plays. A bit off coaching while he kills it on STs, what's not to like?

There will be a stiff competition for special teams rosters spots. Wells is competing for one of those. With regard to LB/S hybrids, Belichick added Richards.

I think that Wells is really competing for a Practice Squad position. We will have lots of talent competing for those positions.

Looks like he's got great coverage skills for a College LB, but not sure how well that translates to covering WR's as an NFL DB. Hope so!
