I think Goodell acted reasonably with Kraft, and said that if indeed Brady's people convincingly debunk the Wells report, then he will cut back on the team sanctions as well, without Kraft having to go through the rigmarole of filing a formal team appeal.

Now, mind you, Goodell is an idiot and has it in for Brady and the Pats, so this won't happen. But my hunch is that is what Kraft is working with: Goodell basically said "If you pull the team out of this, oficially, that won't stop me from reducing the penalty on the team."

Kraft went along with it.

What?? Without the filing of a formal appeal the Commish cannot change the penalties.

...........and then I woke up

I haven't yet thought of a plausible scenario in which Kraft got enough back in return for giving up his leverage.

And yes, I know that that leverage was greatly circumscribed by the franchise contract(s).

If that's the case, then Kraft had no need to call this press conference and give that moronic speech in the first place.

Backing down publicly would, invariably, be a major concession required on Kraft's part for the league to consider a reduction in penalties.

Why would they consider a reduction in penalties WITHOUT AN OFFICIAL APPEAL FILED?

How gullible are people going to continue to ****ing be?

First it was, oh we will get a fair, honest, independent report.
Then it was, oh we will get a fair punishment for the pathetic evidence.
Then it was, oh we will get a good fight from our owner to stand up against the bully.
Now it is, oh things will get changed in the ****ing future?

**** this. **** Robert Kraft. He should sell the team and become ****ing commissioner if that is all he ****ing cares about. **** this ****.

At this point, I wouldn't hate it if Brady and Belichick both said **** it and retired on the spot to leave Kraft looking like a bigger ******* than he already is.

**** him.

I never cease to be amazed by the reality distortion fields embraced by Kraft apologists despite his capitulation.
Love to hear your take on the French army & Maginot Line.

Yep.

AND THIS JUST IN, Texans give Patriots their first round pick next year because they like Ryan Mallet so much and feel it's only fair.

The NFLPA is going to try and prevent Goodell from taking the appeal. How, pray tell, will Goodell be cutting back on the penalty if the NFLPA wins?

You are kidding right?
What do you think not putting whats best or one team over whats best for all 32 means?

Goodell being unchallenged and able to dole out whatever punishment he wants to the players is good for 'the 32'. Draft picks are good for the 1.

And if there was a backdoor deal, it wasn't for Tom Brady's sake, it was so that Goodell can float out an excuse for wiping out Bradys suspension so he won't have to show up in court.

NFLPA MOVES TO RECUSE ROGER GOODELL AS ARBITRATOR IN TOM BRADY APPEAL

The NFLPA has formally requested that Commissioner Roger Goodell recuse himself as the arbitrator in Tom Brady's disciplinary appeal. Given a process that has contained procedural violations of our collective bargaining agreement, the Commissioner's role as a central witness in the appeal hearing and his evident partiality with respect to the Wells report, the Commissioner must designate a neutral party to serve as an arbitrator in this matter. The players also believe that the Commissioner's history of inconsistently issuing discipline against our players makes him ill-suited to hear this appeal in a fair-minded manner.

If the NFL believes the Ted Wells report has credibility because it is independent, then the NFL should embrace our request for an independent review.
