Media mocking of the "the deflater" losing weight

In that line we must surmise that there is a reason to go to ESPN that would be upsetting to the recepient.

Why would anyone think they could go to ESPN and report some nefarious plot to deflate the balls by 0.1 psi below the legal level? How would that gain any traction??

The fact the balls were measured at 16 psi, following the subsequent Jets game in October, would further indicate there was no plot in place.

There's no way I'm looking at that as a neutral observer and not thinking he's asking for gifts in exchange for deflating footballs. I wish I could outrun my common sense on that, but I can't. The jacket comment is the only text that helps.

You cannot find that footballs were deflated by interpretting one text message from 7 months earlier a certain way without any other evidence.

The thing I cannot get past is that this line here:

implies there was a threat made in the previous line. I cannot read that line any other way. If that is the case, where is the threat here?

In that line we must surmise that there is a reason to go to ESPN that would be upsetting to the recepient. This was not covered in the rebuttal that I'm aware of. And it is that fact that doesn't allow me to get past this.

Nevertheless, it is proof of nothing. Just speculation. I think that is the point of Brady's defense. Nothing is proven, even if there is this little cryptic text message from back in May.

It was answered in the rebuttal saying the The Deflator was referring to going to ESPN to say he stole the shoes. Again, not neat and clean, but the truth rarely is.

So, that text message should be used as a major basis to suspend the GOAT for 4 games and take away a 1st round draft choice and a 4th round draft choice, not to mention a $1million fine???

No Brady was suspended because he spoke to the guy who was going to prepare the footballs for the SB the morning after the AFCC game, and because he was mad that the refs inflated the balls to 16 psi in the Jets game.
What a scumbag cheater.

Thanks, I missed that, but I'm not sure I follow. Was he going to ESPN about some previous pair of shoes he was given? Because if he was going to ESPN to report shoes as stolen (ones that aren't his, which he never received), that wouldn't make much sense to anyone.

As a neutral observer it sounds dumb as hell even with the explanation given. I can't blame people for being skeptical about it. But it's still circumstantial and isn't enought to prove any wrongdoing.

No. He said get me the shoes then said 'i'm not going to espn, yet' and it meant that he wasn't going to report to ESPN that Dorito Dink was stealing equipment from the Patriots.

But it only exists because they ignored the science, and search through cell phones to find something they could call incriminating.
It also is important to note that a 103 day investigation hinges on something they went back later and found and then decided was the critical piece of evidence. Why search again if you had them with the science?

I said this in another thread but will repeat here.

The time of that text is 2.5 hours before the second round of the NFL draft and he wants to know if JJ is at work. What information might JJ have access to (while at work) that JM wants to "make a deal" for? He then makes the "not going to ESPN....yet" comment. Also, recognize the similarity between the phrase "Jimmy needs some kicks" and the gambling phrase "daddy/baby needs a new pair of shoes". I can't illuminate beyond that, but I think it's probably valuable context to be considered.

Here is the actual text from the Goldberg Gem:

The May 2014 McNally text reference to “not going to espn” follows his request for “new kicks,” and was Mr. McNally’s way of saying, in substance: “Hey, don’t worry about whether giving me those sneakers will get you in trouble — I’ll never tell.” The Wells investigators had this text long before their interviews with Mr. McNally and Mr. Jastremski. Had they asked Mr. McNally or Mr. Jastremski about this text when they interviewed each for a full day using four lawyers, they would have learned this.

I think the most damning is the "I've got a big needle for you this week.....the only thing deflating on Sun will be TB's passer rating" It is just one piece of evidence, but it is awfully hard to interpret any other way.

Hmmm...after googling deflate and beer pong, it appears that inflatable beer pong tables are a popular thing. The phrase "i'm on fire" is apparently part of beer pong terminology and JM considers himself a damn good beer pong player. if you're that good at beer pong on an inflatable table, is it possible that one would call himself "the deflator"?

also, is it possible that "jimmy needs some kicks" actually refers to Garoppolo, who McNally had inside information was going to be drafted later that night, in the second round of the draft? After all, as equipment manager, JJ would be responsible for ordering new shoes for the new draftee. That information would be very interesting to ESPN.

Without that txt message there would be nothing. One series of txt messages, that's the difference between the immortalilization or the destruction of the greatest player and franchise in the history of the sport.

I'm sorry but I can't help be pissed off at McNally himself.

As much as McNaly and JJ irritate me to no end, I know better than to blame them for all this. You can't expect people to privately text each other and somehow predict that a third-party will someday search through them all. The fact is, these texts were never meant to be for public consumption.

Kinda agree here. Anyone else want to elaborate on that?

This is not on McNally at all. The Patriots should have forensically examined his phone before the January press conferences. If they did, they would have found the messages and would surely have been less adamant that there was no possibility of shenanigans.

The suspension is ridiculous, as are the sanctions against the team (fine and draft picks). It doesn't change the fact that the explanation given for the "deflator" text is at best laughable and actually hurts their argument. It would have been better to simply ignore the text, given that it has no relevance to the AFCCG.

Although I've never heard of deflation as a weight loss term, I have heard "inflate" at the gym for muscle building. And the text about "deflate and give me that jacket," fit that context. Yes, it is stupid, but those guys are not brain surgeons.

Ben Volin@BenVolin
Heard from a contractor who did work on old Foxboro Stadium. Said McNally once joked about farting into the ball. Is that "'the Deflator???"

I think this can be explained with the ideal gas law

I dunno about the weight loss thing... I think if we're honest we all can understand why that argument is at the very least a tough sell on non Patriot fans.

But with that said...who says "The Deflator" proves anything illegal or even related to football at all?

I'm glad I don't know anybody nicknamed Killer....
