Since the Patriots released our rebuttal of the Wells Report the media has lashed on to the Patriots defense of the word "deflator." Everyone is focused on how improbable it is that the term refers to weight lose and not footballs. Here is my question: If the term "deflator" was used prior to the start of the season in May 2014, and it is documented that the Patriots played the Jets (according to text messages) with a football around 16 PSI in October 2014, doesn't that rule out that "deflator" referred to illegally deflated footballs below 12.5 PSI?

But, but, but... deflating can only refer to taking air out of footballs illegally! Haven't you looked at the dictionary definition?!

To me, the fact that a text from May (when there is barely any team activity going on, McNally isn't even employed by the Patriots, and there certainly aren't any games being played), even needs to be explained is the saddest part of this whole thing. How anyone can take that out of context word and assume it relates to something nefarious just speaks to how stupid the NFL thinks (or knows) the general public is.

Page 87 "Deflate and give somebody that jkt: not the first time the word was used in that context.

Good point. To add to that, Jastrenski wrote to his girlfriend "I just measured some of the balls. They supposed to be 13 lbs... They were like 16. Felt like bricks"

Why would he specifically write 13 if he was expecting them to be 12 or less? It completely contradicts the notion they were tampering with the balls. And you don't need to infer anything from that. He was expecting them to be 13.

But it doesn't fit their narrative, so it must have been a joke

I think I broke my own sarcasm meter.

Mr. McNally to Mr. Jastremski: “deflate and give somebody that jacket.” (p. 87).

How can this sentence be referring to the deflation of footballs?

The way the word "deflate" is used here especially in connection with "give somebody that jacket" is just simply not connectable to the act of deflating footballs.

It makes much more sense that "deflate" was used here to mean, losing weight.

No, because it is from May Wells was able to use that as proof that this has been a conspiracy going on for years.
They just forgot about it for a while.

the "going to ESPN....yet" comment has yet to be explained by anyone, let's be honest here. That looks more damning than the "deflator" text because it implies guilt or a secret of some kind.

Unless he meant that he hasn't "deflated" his waistline enough yet to be hired as an ESPN analyst...sorry I'm smiling when I write that, literally...it sounds completely absurd. But stranger things have happened?

Give it a few days - common sense will prevail and people will begin to see it the way it was written in the Patriot response.

I admit....the part about McNally inquiring about pics of Jaz's wife is hysterical.

Yeah, actually it was. In the Patriots' rebuttal.

I bet you anything the jacket refers to a sweat jacket. And he is saying lose weight and stop wearing that disgusting thing all the time.

Trying to understand text messages between two knuckleheads is an exercise in futility. They can mean whatever you want them to mean.

"The “espn” reference in this string of jocular texts was part of their banter and related to the “new kicks.” Mr. Jastremski had made it clear to Mr. McNally over time that his (Jastremski’s) boss would not be happy with him were he to give away sneakers to Mr. McNally. That fact is quite explicit in a number of their texts. (p. 82 — after texting about possibly getting Mr. McNally sneakers and apparel, Mr. Jastremski writes: “unless Dave [his boss, Dave Schoenfeld] leaves the room tomorrow then it’ll wait till next week”). Getting sneakers or apparel for his friend Mr. McNally, in short, meant Mr. Jastremski would have to do so behind his boss’s back. They teased each other about whether Mr. Jastremski would get in trouble for giving him sneakers. The May 2014 McNally text reference to “not going to espn” follows his request for “new kicks,” and was Mr. McNally’s way of saying, in substance: “Hey, don’t worry about whether giving me those sneakers will get you in trouble — I’ll never tell.”

They explained it today.

Jaz was giving shoes to McNally when Jaz's boss told him not to do so.
