Well, maybe I'd still feel like crap, but I'd respect him SOME.

Everyone SHOULD realize that they were being manipulated by the media, when Chris Mortensen insisted that a trusted NFL source had told him, and he accepted as gospel, that 11 of 12 Patriots footballs were more than 2 psi below specifications.

The (made up) "data" was what prompted all of the outrage. That was the focus of the lead story on CNN world news tonight. And it we know, from Mr. Wells, with 100% certainty that it was a made up lie!

We have the numbers. There were 22 measurements of Patriots footballs, and ZERO were more than 2 psi below specifications, using either gauge. By the gauge that the ref says he used to set pressure in the balls pregame, one ball was down 1.6 psi, one by 1.5 psi, and the other 9 were either down by the amount you'd expect (1.0-1.3 psi or so) or were a little on the HIGH end.

Would we be where we are today is Chris Mortensen would have reported

"2 of 11 Patriots footballs were about 0.3 psi below where they should have been"

rather than

"11 of 12 Patriots footballs were more than 2 psi below specifications"

Do you think that Chris Mortensen is ever going to retract his story?
Do you think that Chris Mortensen is ever going to say who fed him the lie?
Pigs will fly first.

And yet, count on it, he will make smug comments about the Patriots needing to "own up" to their misdeeds. And he won't own up to his mistake. EVER. None of them will.

John Tomase is ethical compared to Chris Mortensen, because he at least EVENTUALLY fessed up and said "yeah, I had nothing"

The mouth breathers played their hands the week before when they were all serious about the Patriots cheating with a fairly easy to spot and defend formation. The big joke was that Harbaugh made himself look amateurish, and no one pointed it out.

I am not sure he has seen much daylight since those remarks, as he is usually to be found tucked far far up the Manning behinds...

Where would we be? We would be not talking about this crap right now. That report and the subsequent confirmations lit a fire that could not and would not be extinguished. Goodell should be fired for wasting everyone's time. Mort has been extremely quiet. Where is he at? Has he said anything? I haven't seen it.

Found him! Zero tweets since May 2. Wow.

Mort is Peyton Manning's sock puppet. He'll **** on Tom as much as he can because he thinks it helps Peyton. The dude is living in 2012. Nobody gives a **** about Peyton Manning. The dude thinks the debate is still alive.

He won't write anything truthful about this situation for the same reason Eli Manning came out and said "I just tested playing with under inflated footballs and it's a really big advantage."

It's a sad, sorry, pitiful attempt to increase Peyton's stock.

I don't recall hearing an "I got it wrong" from Mortensen about his claims like Michael Vick wouldn't be indicted or Tim Tebow was definitely signing with Jacksonville. He'll act like it never happened and carry on as usual.

This is the same guy who said in 2013 that Kaepernick was the greatest quarterback of all time.
"He's better than Montana. I think he could be the greatest quarterback of all time."

Anyone remember that ****? ESPN started running segments on it in the spirit of inventing their own news to talk about.

The guy is a joke.

Not sure, but I believe that was Ron Jaworski.

None of this matters or will be helpful, we were destined to get screwed once the sting was setup. They only needed the game to be played! I suppose we were lucky it wasn't the Baltimore game. The pressure would have been even lower.
All the facts, science and truth went out the window with the Wells report.

Since I heard Mort say less than a week ago that "several of the balls were significantly below the minimum" (not verbatim, but damn close), I wouldn't get your hopes up.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/05/13/a-theory-on-how-deflategate-initially-unfolded/

Then, someone from the league (it surely wasn’t someone from the Patriots) leaked to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that 10 of the 12 balls were a full two pounds below the 12.5 PSI minimum. The measurement reveal that this information was false.

The false information leaked to Mortensen gave the story more traction and a higher degree of significance. It also placed the Patriots on the defensive without the Patriots knowing the specific PSI measurements against which they were defending. If true and accurate information had been leaked to the media or given to the Patriots, coach Bill Belichick’s notorious Mona Lisa Vito press conference would have been far more persuasive, because the data from one of the two significantly conflicting gauges used to determine the air pressure generated measurements in line with the expected loss in pressure during 90 minutes in the elements of a January day in Foxboro.

Think of how different the narrative would have been if, in the early days of the scandal, the prevailing information from one of the largest sports-media outlets in America had been not that 10 of the 12 balls were two pounds under the minimum but that all 12 balls (including the one that had been intercepted by Jackson) tested within the range consistent with the application of the Ideal Gas Law.

Also, think of how different the narrative would have been if, in the early days of the scandal, the league had acknowledged that the officials used two different gauges with dramatically different readings generated.

This piece by Florio is a beauty. If Mort had gotten and reported the story right, none of this happens.

People are coming around on the science/data part of the puzzle. But, they are latching onto the text messages, and giving them equal importance, then saying the lack of cooperation is the trump card.

This is how you explain the silliness of that stance.

Scenario:

Ballboy Jimmy brings a bag of 11 footballs to referees Moe and Curly.

NFL executive Shep comes to to talk to Moe and Curly, saying "I think that Jimmy is cheating! Those footballs might not be at the right pressure! What should we do?"

Moe says "I know, I know! Let's use the pressure gauge to see if they are at the right pressure!"

Curly says "Moe, that is absolutely STUPID. What is measuring football pressure going to tell you about the amount of pressure in a football? What we need to do is get a good look at his CELL PHONE"

Well Mort's report was garbage but he was fed garbage information. As a journalist he should have confirmed the story with a second source before running with it but that's long gone out the window.

So two things SHOULD happen: Mortensen should retract the story and offer an apology to the Patriots, Kraft, Brady and the fans for starting a media firestorm. And either he reveal his source or the Patriots demand an investigation into the media leaks, starting with Mortensen but running right through leak last Friday about a suspension lasting up to a year.

The NFL never corrected the bad, injurious information from the first leak, despite having evidence at their disposal to do so from day 1. They watched Brady and Belichick hold multiple press conferences and get grilled on faulty numbers. The started an investigation fueled by outrage at these faulty numbers. And the report glossed over any wrong-doing on the part of Kensil, Grigson, Blandino, anyone else involved in what was an operation solely focused on catching the Patriots cheating.

THIS is where a defamation suit can be won: the NFL knew the info was wrong and failed to correct it. Brady and Belichick's names will forever be linked to deflategate and Brady's legacy has forever been tarnished. Based on a bogus report that was allowed to sit out there for months without being corrected. I hope Brady and the Patriots attack this with a vengeance.

Given that:

1. The NFL eventually corrected the faulty numbers.
2. The NFL claims that the outrage over the faulty numbers didn't motivate their own decisions (yeah, right).

on what basis could such a suit be won?

Even if somebody subpoenas Mort, he can play hero journalist and refuse to reveal his source. And the Pats would have a slight PR problem if they went and aggressively subpoenaed his phone records, even assuming such a subpoena would be granted.

Mort won't reveal his source, EVER, but if he would simply attest that his source was indeed an employee of the NFL, then we would be getting somewhere. Somewhere that Mr. Goodell has been hoping that we would never get to.

I'm not saying the Pats/Brady can win a defamation suit, but I think it'd be worthwhile to pursue in order to subpoena Goodell/Kensil/Grigson/Blandino/Vincent and their phones. Make them feel some pain, see who was leaking this faulty information and if there was any malice behind them. If Wells can interpret off-the-cuff texts as gospel let's see what kind of dirt is behind those guys.

What if Kensil sent the info to Mort (which I believe is the case; either him or Grigson). What if he then texts Goodell or Vincent or, hell, his wife 'just sent some numbers to Mort; let's see the Patriots try to get out of this one!'

Again, I don't expect this to happen but the bogus leak prompted all this outrage. And the fact Mort's numbers were taken as gospel through the SB and months after, that Brady and Belichick were grilled based on those numbers when the NFL knew they were bogus...that's inexcusable.

I keep see hitler invoked, it needs to stop for several reason one of which is Goodwins law.

Godwin's law
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mike Godwin (2010)

Godwin's Law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1][2] is an Internet adage asserting that "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1"[2][3]— that is, if an online discussion (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler orNazism. Despite being described as universal, regardless of the subject of the discussion, Godwin's law is more likely to be applicable to social topics (including politics, law, religion, etc.).

There are many corollaries to Godwin's law, some considered more canonical (by being adopted by Godwin himself)[3] than others.[1] For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress.[8] This principle is itself frequently referred to as Godwin's law.

Referring to goodel as hitler just takes away from the argument, we won't be taken seriously by visiters. Instead they'll think were just as bad as jest, indy, denver bolts fans etc.
