Post Draft Scouting Report: Matt Wells, LB/S

Thank you! This was one of the fun picks for me, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with him. Nobody's better than the Patriots at finding ways for players to do the things they do well.

Nice writeup. Geneo Grissom, Wells and Darryl Roberts are 3 really intriguing defensive picks to me. If one of the three pans out, it will be a significant addition to the defense. If 2 or more pan out, it could be a really strong defensive draft.

Like Grissom, Wells is a guy who "fits nowhere and plays everywhere". Most of the NFL has no idea what to do with these kind of guys. BB loves them.

Absolutely right Mayo,
I think you could see and hear the excitement in BB voice when he talked about these guys, Grissom in particular. I think he has been looking for his Gronk type player on defense. A guy who he can line up all over and find mismatches and create confusion with. Gronk helps tip what the defense wants to do. These guys on defense, IF they work out, can help create confusion and mismatches for the opposing offense. If you don't know who is lining up where and who is coming and who isn't, it makes for a long, confusing day for QB's.

I think BB already has his Gronk type player on defense - Jamie Collins. I'm not trying to put that much pressure on the Grissom pick, but the more things he (and the other guys) can do, the better.

FWIW, Mike Loyko tweeted:
Jamie Collins is the player I had the toughest time evaluating in 2013. Geneo Grissom was the toughest this year. #Patriots took both.

I don't think that's entirely a coincidence.

I think he's hoping Grissom and Wells can replace Ayers and Casillas. We got help from both of those guys last year.

I like the potential of Wells as a specialist coverage linebacker in addition to ST. He likes fast on the field and has decent height from what little I have seen.

And Grissom's upper body strength is ridiculous.

Two fun players to watch.

Their versatility means there is more chance they will find a situational niche in training camp to stick on the team (Grissom should be a lock) which hopefully translate to gameday contributions.

BB has said in the past regarding players who have grown in the system that they will ask them to do some things and if they are up to the task, will ask them to do incrementally more.

I would've waited until the 7th round to draft Wells. He would've been there. Passing on Michael Bennett, twice, was just ******ed. Tre McBride too.

You're just hilarious. I forgot how much of a downer you were -- I haven't posted here in 4 years, but came back for draft discussions. Not much has changed. :)

Are we going to see a scouting report on Joe Cardona?

Probably not. I am working on some of the other guys, but it is tough finding enough tape on these guys to make an informed decision.
