Patriots sign TE Fred Davis

Well Derby's slim chances to make the team just got slimmer.

I like what I saw of him though and hope we can keep him on the practice squad.

Yeah. He's no lock to stay. Worth a flier at least

Fred Davis is a good player with a bad personal history. The TE position on this team is stacked.

I always liked him as a player, good pass catching TE. This is probably his last chance.

According to local sports radio in the DC area, he would fall asleep in team meetings. The Skins current coaching staff & personnel office want nothing to do with him. I think falling asleep in meetings is more likely to get him cut than the weed.

gronk gonna be suspended for mocking

yup goodell's feelings were hurt when gronk mocked deflategate. 8 game suspension.

At his best, he was a pretty good player. Of course, that's when he was awake.

Maybe he needs to be checked for narcolepsy.

You also have to remember his QB's were Jason Campbell, old Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman and RG3.

Obviously the off the field and falling asleep in team meetings is a concern, but if the front office is happy to take that chance I'm all for it. He could be a nice, solid player or he could get cut and cost us very little.

Anyone know what % of plays Davis has been split out wide in his career? A better version of Wright may be a solid WR4 for us too.

If his head is screwed on, the Patriots now have the best collection of Tight Ends in the NFL (Gronk makes this a moot point but you get what I am getting at). Davis' best is tremendous.

You could make an argument that, by himself, GRONK would still be the top TE unit in the NFL.

I don't know what to think about this, I don't think the Patriots are going with 4 TE on the 53 man roster, from the current 5, one is obviously going to be cut. If Davis stays, that means it's going to be Hooman or Wright, if not both.

I have some hope that they will convert Wright on a pure receiver instead of TE. He's tall, physical, has good hands, I don't want him to be cut.

I was thinking that there could be a some good competition for the last WR slot between Wright, Tyms, and Gibson.

Odd decision here.
Suspended all 2014 for domestic abuse and substance abuse.
Only played 7 games 2013.

Longshot.
Was very good in 2011 and very bad since.

Incorrect about the domestic abuse portion. He was suspended for multiple substance abuse violations.

The female "assault and battery" charges were both bogus. The first was due to him pouring a drink over a woman's head at a bar. She got 19K for damage to, among other things, her hair weave. I'm not joking. Look it up. The second occurred after he was pissed off that his girlfriend was having dinner with another guy. He pulled a plant out of the pot and threw it at her outside of the restaurant. She went back inside to grab a condiment bottle to assault him with some ketchup (possibly Heinz) but was stopped. She told the police that she was on injured but still filed a claim the next day.

Wright is TOO slow to play WR. I really had high hopes for him early on, but he really disappeared in the 2nd half of the season. That being said, I'd be surprised if Davis makes the team. He'd really have to make a huge impression and stay on the straight and narrow. Don't know if he can do either.

Whether the charges were dropped or no, he obviously has anger issues. I hope they don't come up while he is a Patriot, that's all we need.

I was thinking more about him being a red zone target like he did last season, and running some 20 yard routes, with the line we are going to field Brady will have time again to make his progressions.

Not a bad idea when you mention it like that. I think he did finish 3rd on the team with TD catches.

Derby was destined for the PS the moment his name was called on draft night. He is 100% prospect for the future given his thin playing time in college.
