@OliverBThomas David Andrews told 680 The Fan that Bill Belichick called him twice during draft. Andrews said Patriots offered him a $35,000 signing bonus.

@NEPD_Loyko: 35,000 for David Andrews is the most ever for. A #patriots UDFA I believe.

Unheard of from an UDFA. Newsworthy IMO.

Really interesting.
There were only six centers taken in the draft, so there were numerous centers available as undrafted free agents.
How would that affect demand for centers in rookie free agency - a wealth of good players available to select, or 20+ teams who didn't take one competing for those remaining?

The Patriots drafted a center relatively high last year. That player was their strongest contributor from the rookie class and seems to have the clearest hold on an offensive line position over the long term of any player on the team.
They added a player generally slotted as a center in Shaq Mason - although he played mostly guard, his stature made teams see him more as a center.

Last year the Patriots tried playing several players that were tackles at guard. Cannon, Devey, Fleming - all players in the 6-5 to 6-7 range, 320 to 350 pounds. That really didn't work in their system. Then they reversed course and played three centers in the interior - Connolly, Stork, Wendell, all shorter, lighter, more agile. That worked better.

The Patriots have now added Mason as a C/G, and seemed to have targeted C Andrews as their top udfa candidate. Add that to Tre Jackson, a pure guard. They avoided the tackle-to-guard conversion players like Poutasi, Marpet, Feliciano, Douglas.

If he can add some strength and girth he seems to have the skills to play in the league.

With two OC's added, I wonder if the Pats might entertain the thought of moving Stork to OG?

They are also reportedly going after Collins.

You really need 15-18 OLs in camp. They are below that number I think.

I'm happy that they drafted pure guards, they only thing is that they are all right guards and our major need is on the left side, that's why I wanted them to draft AJ Cann.

Shaq Mason has started on both sides. I think he projects well to LG, long term. (Though I did like Cann too!)

With a relatively stacked roster already (in terms of numbers), the team can offer larger signing bonuses, since they could be using them on fewer players.

Yep, 11 draft picks will fill out a roster in a hurry.

I'm surprised that the money did not go to a higher rated udfa but the Patriots have player
ranking unlike those of other teams.
