Sign the Beast LXIX: La'el Collins - do the Pats have a shot if he is cleared?

If the Pats won't overpay for Darrell Revis or Vince Wilfork, what makes anyone think they'd overpay (relatively speaking) for an UDFA with a cloud over his head who plays a position where the Pats are already OK and which they just used two fourth round picks to bolster?

lolwut? Overpay for a guy who's going to receive one of the lowest cap hits on the team? He's a top 15 talent in the draft who cares if you have talent there already, if he's willing to sign TAKE him! All this assuming he gets cleared of course and it's doubtful anyone will sign him before hand. Plus, he could move his way into Solder's position and that would save Pats a ton of money.

A guy who might have gone in round one last week getting a max UDFA contact? I assume that was sarcasm.

I will have to make it clearer that Collins's compensation as an UDFA is severely limited.

It's quite clear. You can't stop people from ignoring what's clear.

I think given his age and the fact that there are strict limitations on what teams can offer, I find it very unlikely that he would choose new England as his team..

Pretty much the contract details are going to be relatively the same across the board.. so he would end up going to a south Florida team, or California in my opinion...

Who the %×#& would choose the miserable weather of new England over Miami Beach or the west coast at 22 years old?

I would love them to get him, but I still think he will end up going to a team with a clear and immediate tackle need.

None of the three teams that reportedly have shown the most interest in him have a very clear need at tackle. You may be able to make a case for the Dolphins but, even then, he could just as easily end up playing guard for them as well.

Not to mention the disgusting amount of taxes he would have to pay living up there as opposed to living in south Florida.

I would, spent some time down south and it's just too hot. I suppose football season it might be a bit more tolerable when it's a bit cooler but hey we haven't had trouble attracting free agents up here. If his agent is smart it might not be a bad idea to steer him in the direction of a team that's probably had the most success of developing o-line in the league the past decade or so.

I'm not sure how true it is but, I've heard from a guy on another forum who has been involved in those types of taxes that the tax situation in non income tax states is a very overrated factor and when it comes down to it (because of having to pay taxes in every city you play in) it's not that big of a difference.

From what I've seen the most he can get is $1.57m guaranteed. Every team interested in him would give him that in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I was going off a previous post saying he would get lots of guaranteed money. Miguel cleared it up.

The Chargers and Panthers have shown interest too now. Both can use tackle help.

The one thing I did discount is if his self scouting tells him he can be an elite guard at the NFL level, but only an average tackle. If that is the case, then he would consider a guard spot.

I'd guess one of the Texas teams has a better chance than the Florida teams. Close to home. No state taxes and more importantly. Better teams. Can get that bonus money. That playoff money should really tilt things in our favor. If he prioritizes money and winning over location. It's much more than he'll pay in state taxes.

BB put high empahsis on the OL especially guys who can play Tackle...you never have enough of those guys and Marcus Cannon Sucks I wouln't want us to get to him on the dept chart. If the Patriots did scout Collins and liked him before the mess if he's cleared they can win any bidding war they just cut Dennard. A La'el Collins signing would make me forget about that questionable selection.

None of the statements from the police or his lawyer today after his police interview would make me feel better about the chances of him putting this behind him any time soon...

I think if he is not father of the baby, Police would inform people to take some load off his back (they surely now have the baby's DNA to compare with his). They didn't make a statement so it's very risky as he may have been involved somehow in this tragedy.

Marcus Cannon was a 5th rounder. Hardly, a questionable selection.

Somebody else mentioned this earlier, but if STATE TAXES are considered, the person is a moron.

First of all, NFL players typically file in 10-12 states - the "jock" tax, look it up.

Second, state taxes are not onerous - typically just a few % - and they're deductible from Federal taxes.

In the end, whether playing in Florida or in California...the tax is a rounding error.

Florida doesn’t have any state income tax, so in order for the Lions and the Raiders to match the after tax net earnings on a $60 million guarantee, the Lions would have had to pay Suh approximately $64.9 million and the Raiders would have had to pay $70.1 million, said sports tax specialist Robert Raiola, senior manager at the accounting firm O’Connor Davis in New York.

$10.1 million and $4.9 million are pretty big rounding errors.

They have to file in multiple states anyway (if you play a game in, say, California, you have to file for that portion of your earnings in California), so that article overstates it, purposely, to make its larger point.

And the state taxes paid are federally deductible, so knock another 39.5% off the money you're actually paying in.

You seem to think that millions of dollars are rounding errors. 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of individuals in the world would probably disagree.

Bookmark my post and rub my nose in it if the Pats sign him.
