Patriots to Release Alfonzo Dennard

Did you quote my comment by accident? I'm not seeing the relation.

If I misunderstood I apologize.

My point is that just because Logan played in place of Dennard in 2014, doesn't mean that his is any good.
It only means that Ryan was better than Dennard at the time.
======
That being said, IMHO, Ryan has a place on the roster as a special teamer, and as a backup starter in a zone defense.

Along with Ott and Skinner.

Jeff Howe @jeffphowe
Dennard's work ethic and commitment to the game were routinely questioned by those in the building during his tenure.

If this is truly the case, then it is no wonder he is gone. The Pats would much rather have hard working people who care than someone there just to collect a paycheck..

The comment you quoted was solely related to how Dennard and Ryan compared to one another, not how either relates to the overall depth chart. No worries.

DB, I was REALLY hoping that this wasn't the case. Dennard, I believed has shown the talent to be an important asset this season. It's disappointing that the rumors we heard coming out of Foxoboro were true. But that being said, it should be noted that one of the reasons for the Pats success is that the Pats really do work THAT hard and demand a focus from their players that isn't equally shared with most teams. This doesn't make Dennard a bad person or bad player. He's just not right for HERE. Hopefully that one of the new players that will replace him will have the right combination of talent and focus that will make this a better team.

They are gong to HAVE to be better, because it looks like everyone else is....at least on paper. And isn't that all that counts right now. ;).

If the Patriots go back to a zone defense there's no chance they'll repeat. Bill's zone schemes are borderline horrible, that's why he scrapped them in the first place.

Yes, the zone schemes were so bad that they won 2 SBs with them in 2003 and 2004..

They didn't play predominantly zone in 03 and 04.

You clearly don't remember 2003 or 2004, do you? They played a ton of Zone because people were always complaining about Law and Smith being so far off the receivers. In 2004, Law went down and they were relying on Samuel, Troy Brown and Earthwind Moreland amongst others. They played a ton of Zone then as well.. You claiming they didn't is ridiculous..

Morris Claiborne sounds like he is on his way out of Dallas so that could be an option if he agreed to sign a new contract in the deal (he'll be a UFA after this season).

Morris Claiborne:

1) coming off of another major injury and may not even be ready by the start of TC

2) he's sucked...pathetically, in every way possible, from attitude to injury prone, and lousy play in-between

3) he's currently under contract in DAL where they seem hell bent on not admitting to their terrible mistake to move up, and still seem to be holding out some faint hope that he'll prove himself this coming year

The popular thought of the past 2 weeks on this forum = every NFL player whose team didn't pick up their very expensive 5th year option, must automatically be trade bait after THREE years. While anything is possible, I'd have a difficult time envisioning him as a NEP. Just my opinion.

They did play a lot of zone but they played even more man. They almost always played man on 3rd an 4th down those years, even after Law got hurt.

You are who you roll with ... Dennard's been rolling with the wrong people .... the news release is a cover for it...IMO.
Was he bringing brownies to Hernandez?

FWIW Jordan Richards was also the "disaster CB" at Stanford according to teammates, so he is capable of playing the position if need be as well. In a "disaster" anyway.

Browner lost his job in Seattle and they let him walk without a serious contract offer. I would assume the reason in Seattle and New England was similar. He has a pretty limited skillset and no scheme or position versatility. His extremely high number of penalties was a liability as he constantly moved the chains for the opposing offense.

I completely agree. I don't get all the hand wringing over Browner.

1. He had a limited skill set.

2. He was an undicipllined PI magnet. "This is my game, I'm not going to change it." It was not a matter of if he was going to draw a penalty, but how many. (Does that sound like a Patriot type player?)

3. He was expensive.

Holy crap. Come onnnnn 6/1 cuts!
June 1 cuts were a thing about five years ago. If you're looking for help there, you'll probably be disappointed.

I mean they really have no choice now but to trade for a vet CB based on their roster now

No choice?

No way they're trading for a CB before the season starts, imo. Short of a FA pick up this is the squad that will start the season. When they've been hit by departures in various squads in the past they've never hit the panic button because they had "no choice" and I don't think they will now.

I suspect that this was a consequence of what the team saw when he showed up for the offseason program. Gotta wonder if there's something else, info from team security staff or failed substance abuse test or medical indications - was he out of shape or partied out?

Whatever the reason, Belichick's remarks about the rookies just got emphasized, this clearly shows nobody gets to slough off with impunity. Even a talented CB on a team with desperate need at the CB position can get cut, sends a pretty clear message about complacency and any Super Bowl hangover.

Perhaps this is Bill's version of 'Pour encourager les autres'.
