Patriots draft "grades"

They also graded Mariota as a C- and Gurley as a C+.
"Stupid is, as Stupid does." to quote a famous film character. Franchise QBs don't grow on trees, you get them when you can.

The problem with draft grades is they are almost always rendered with "value" and "need" in mind. The problem with including "value" is there is no defn for the term "value". The problem with including "need" is, unless they are privy to the inner goings on of teams, the guys ranking the drafts haven't the foggiest idea what the true needs of teams are.

I mean is the draft not supposed to be a process that allows a team to find players who will make their teams better; regardless of perceived need or what round they were drafted?

Take the above mentioned CBS draft grade report for example.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/drafttracker

CBS ranks Mariota as a C- and Gurley as a C+. Obviously, this is not done with regard to how good the player will become.

So, who really cares ........ but the draftniks.

The odds are that most of these guys will bust, so luck is a huge factor, positional needs are almost never the same from one year to the next, and NFL teams pour in millions of dollars for scouting and investigators, while guys like Kiper and McShay go to Staples to buy an eraser board on their 70k salaries.

While I think that draft grades are silly, I guarantee you that Kiper (especially) and McShay have salaries far, far to the north of $70k, and their salaries are much higher than anyone outside of general managers and head coaches in football operations around the league. Scouts aren't exactly well paid.

And d%#*!@t I still had binkies on my board, too!

Cardona was Belichick's binkie. If we wait 2 years, then we'll have a great LS in 2 years. We seem to think that Belichick lost "draft value" in drafting his binkie. He did, but nowhere near as much as he did earlier in drafting Richards and in drafting Grissom.

And this elusive loss of draft value still left FOUR picks on the board for binkies. Belichick could have picked ours. He picked his: Cardona, Wells, Derby, Roberts and ****son. We have a very deep roster. If two of these (plus UDFA's) make the team, it will be a major plus.

I look at this year as a restocking year..Pats got a top DL in Brown and some darn good players to improve their team's depth and ST play. Every year produces a player or two that nobody expected much from but earns a well deserved spot on the team. The Richards pick definitely was a head scratcher, as was Cardona,
They lost Vereen and Ridley but Ridley , even tho I really liked him, was IR'd and they kept on winning without him. They have enough RB's to fill that void he left. Just waiting to see who takes up the slack for Vereen's loss.. Still plenty of moves left before the final roster is set. Bill and his team always seem to get it right...every year....

Too early to grade draft but have to feel pretty good in what the Pats got so far.....mix in a few UDFA's and a couple vets and they will be GTG for 2015 season !!
