I feel like you can do this just about every year with the Patriots draft:

Doug Kyed‏@DougKyedNESN
If you rearrange the Patriots' draft, it looks a lot more normal:

That puts things in perspective for the draft nuts. Well played Mr. Kyed. :)

Apparently, Belichick felt that it wasn't a priority and that some competition could be brought in during the UDFA process. I'd have been fine with a WR in the top 3-4 rounds, so you're preaching to the choir.

My main point was that we're attempting to convert another QB to WR player, and that the last one (Edelman) didn't work out too badly.

He only drafted one CB, and that was in the 7th round, while he spent a 5th on a guy who's 2 years away from being a long snapper. I don't think his draft was a referendum on team needs.

Unless there is an arrest in this case, there is no way the Pats would ever consider getting involved with another murder suspect.
Now Dallas on the other hand could care less!

If he's cleared, which I think is likely, I don't see why not. Rare opportunity for the Pats to obtain a young, top end draft talent

Unless BB has some info that Cardona can play before 2 years I don't like the pick. Even a first round talent who goes two years without playing competitive football will have almost zero draft value.

Alternative viewpoint from http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/xzavier-****son?id=2552682 , which is pretty negative overall. One of the things I did like though is that in 2014 he lead Alabama in TFL & Sacks... though he only 'started' 9/14 games, for whatever that's worth.

Xzavier ****son

STRENGTHS

Five straight games with at least 0.5 sacks in conference play and finished the 2014 season with nine sacks. Gets adequate jump off the snap and into his pass rush with low pad level. Will stay low to ground and come under and around the edge toward quarterback if he gets the jump on an offensive tackle. Uses well-timed shoulder turn and hand swipe to win the edge against waist-benders. Has the leverage and strength to get under pads and bull rush tackles. Consistent contributor for winning program and solid Alabama defense.

WEAKNESSES

Smooth body, lacking the muscularity and definition usually found at the position. Doesn't dominate tight ends. Fails to set and hold the edge as regularly as desired. Content to lay on blocks rather than consistently disengaging and constricting the running lanes. Marginal athleticism with signs of stiffness in his lower body. Seems to be lacking competitive fire at times and isn't prone to aggressive pursuit of a play from the back side. Rarely used in coverage and primarily used as rush end.

DRAFT PROJECTION

Round 7 or priority free agent

BOTTOM LINE

Used as a 3-4 outside 'backer at times and as a defensive end when Alabama goes to its even front, ****son has adequate skills as a pass rusher, but is average to below average against the run. ****son doesn't feature the explosive, athletic traits to be a pass-rushing specialist and might not have enough strength at the point of attack to be an every-down defensive end.

I follow UA football somewhat (I work at UAB 50 miles up the road), although not fanatically like I do the Patriots :D This synopsis looks fairly accurate. ****son was a very highly recruited high school athlete (22nd in the class of 2011 according to ESPN). He played quite a bit at UA as a senior and he was fairly successful but perhaps did not live up to his high school pedigree. As described in the synopsis, he occasionally lacked competitive fire.

Perhaps a paycheck with the prospect of much more $$ down the road will light that fire ;)

The biggest surprises to me would be the lack of a RB, WR, or CB, along with the sheer number of selections taken.

I expected either stockpiling a few picks into next year + 2017, or moving up to snag a better talent.

It's hard for me to whine about BB's drafting style, but those would be my nitpicks.

Honestly I think the goal was to make the defense as good as last year and upgrade the OL. The defense will obviously have a very different strength, but could be just as good or better if our pass rush has improved like we all hope it has.

The OL will be less experienced but the 2 guards we drafted should be talent upgrades.

Next year will focus on skill positions if we had any sort of success in the trenches this year.

The New England Patriots are projected to receive a third round and two sixth round compensatory draft picks in the 2016 NFL Draft.

In addition, the New England Patriots receive a seventh round draft pick in the 2016 NFL Draft from the Houston Texans for Ryan Mallett.

I'm depressed they didn't draft a running back. I like Blount and all but he's not overly exciting... Maybe Gaffney, Gray and Cadet produce above expectations and I'm surprised. Oh well.

RB has a lot of young depth and people are sleeping on Cadet. The tea leaves are pretty blatant in suggesting they think he can safely be written in for Vereen's role.

Surprised on the WR front though, I would have like to see some competition, at least. They certainly looked at enough WRs in the scouting process, just look at the contact list...

@IanLogue: Lack of a WR being picked is interesting. Pats return their entire group in '15, & hopefully this means they're pleased w/Dobson's progress

Story of the draft

I never bought that NE was overly interested in WRs this year. I would have bet the mortgage that they wouldn't select one in the first and was comfortable saying they wouldn't in the second, either.

Recommendation: Chung, Bequette, Wilson, Devey, Aiken. Thank you for your service.

Chung? Eugene, perhaps?

The biggest surprises to me would be the lack of a RB, WR, or CB, along with the sheer number of selections taken.

Since I already discussed my lack of surprise at RB/WR, my biggest takeaway was the DE investment. Jones and Nink had definitely been overworked, but Sheard's signing plus the versatility of HT/Easley/Collins led me to believe the position was well stocked. Instead, Bill went after it hard. I'm really curious to see whether that was an effort to get ahead of possible Jones/Collins defections or it the coaches have a new defense in mind.

The New England Patriots exercised the fith year option with regards to Chandler Jones contract.

Overall a typical bb draft. Still puzzled why we took tavon Wilson part 2 in the second when pj Williams was still on the board.

It's actually even better than that - that particular page was last updated April 3. About 5 days later , Stevan Ridley signed with the Jets, which added an additional projected 6th round comp pick for Akeem Ayers. Link blow.

http://overthecap.com/compensatory-draft-picks-cancellation-chart/

So that makes 12 projected draft picks, pending Roger Goodell docking another pick due to his incompetence.

They could have had 10 extra picks for next draft and it still shouldn't/wouldn't stop Belichick from trying to acquire more for 2016 and beyond, had the opportunity presented itself.

One can make a very strong argument that we do not have anything close to 11 spots on the 53 man roster; therefore, some of those picks could be viewed as wasted resources.

Yes, personally, I did expect them to either move up for better talent, or down for additional picks into the future. I did not expect 11 selections to be taken.

I am not going start worrying about the 2017 NFL Season until 2017 especially after the New England Patriots selected two defensive ends in the 2015 NFL Draft:

Grissom, Geneo
Flowers, Trey

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/tracker/by-round#dt-tabs:dt-by-team/dt-by-team-input:ne

Which takes us back to @Oswlek's original point, in that it's quite possible that Belichick is preparing for that departure, and that's why those selections were made in the first place.

While you may not be concerned about the 2017 season, Bill Belichick always seems to continue looking ahead, and the long-term big money extension of Chandler Jones is no sure thing as this point in time.

You seem peeved about a few draft selections in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Which picks do you feel are a waste of time?

The New England Patriots have not even drafted players in 2016, yet you are worried about 2017.

Sheesh!

Sheesh!

I did not mention ONE word about "being worried" about 2017.

I pointed out @Oswlek's comment about the drafting of 2 DEs and the relationship that it could have to Chandler Jones. You then came back with the very obvious comment about how Jones' 5th year option was picked up, as if we all didn't already know that. The suggestion made was that the 2 DE picks were for the future more than the present.

And....here we are.
