He's "required" to serve 5 (everyone who goes to the Naval Academy is) but can apply to leave after 2 if he's on the Patriots roster.

Actually, he can get dispensation for the 2 if he is on the Patriots Roster, just like Ben Garland did with the Broncos last year.

Slater was a terrible 5th round choice for a "special teamer" as well. Why do people constantly undervalue superior or possible superior special teams players? That's where Edelman started. If you can get a long snapper that won't ever airmail a ball or misfire you do it. Could be the play of a game.

Normally I'd agree, but Slater could come in and play from day one. Cardona will almost certainly be unavailable until 2017, and it seems unlikely that another team would have selected him in the 5th or 6th round as a result.

Experts looking for/expecting the Patriots to draft corners early and often were a bit off.

Looks like Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan and Alfonzo Dennard will be competing for the two outside starting positions, with Kyle Arrington as the slot corner.

After that it is Bradley Fletcher, Robert McClain, Justin Green, Dax Swanson and Chimdi Chekwa at cornerback. Hopefully everyone can continue to improve, and stay healthy.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Pats double down at corner in the 2016 draft, similar to the focus on the offensive line this year.

Kinda like..you know building from the inside out? Maybe this is what they liked this year (Front 7). I completely agree.

For all the people who want us to pick up Lael Collins (myself included)... The best chance of us actually getting him is for him to go undrafted. He has openly said he would not play this year if drafted after the 3rd, and being drafted would allow him to sit out this year and resubmit his name for the 2016 draft. If he goes undrafted he CANNOT declare again next year and must sign with n NFL team if he intends to play a down in this league. As a UDFA I think the pats would have a good chanceto sign hhim and would be able to get him for a cheap 3 year contract

Possible. They could slide him into the Reserves. There are quite a few things that could be done I imagine.

Linebackers that size with that speed taken where he was don't convert to safety or project to be a dime backer. They're special teams guys. With that speed he'll be a stud covering kicks.

While I agree about covering kicks, what is to say that he won't be able to handle being a safety? He's just doesn't have speed. He's also got quickness and agility that compares closely to the likes of Kam Chancellor and other good Safeties.. The question becomes how does diagnosing plays in front of him.. He did play OLB for Miss. St. and did drop into coverage for them.. Not saying that he WILL be a Kam Chancellor but there is nothing that says he won't either.

How about Ifo Ekpre-olomu? Is he still available? Might as well draft him since this season is a throw-away as far as the defensive backfield....

Actually, he can get dispensation for the 2 if he is on the Patriots Roster, just like Ben Garland did with the Broncos last year.

Garland joined the Broncos in camp after being signed as a UDFA in 2010, then served 2 years active duty prior to rejoining the Broncos (in camp) in 2012. He didn't actually make his NFL debut until last season after 2 years of bouncing around on the practice squad, but he had done exactly what Cardona would have to do - serve 2 years and then apply to join the NFL - by 2012.

Garland was signed by the Denver Broncos on April 25, 2010 after going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Broncos placed Garland on the reserve/military list on September 4, 2010 to serve his two-year military commitment.[3] He was released by the Broncos on August 31, 2012. He was signed to the Broncos' practice squad on September 1, 2012. He was released by the Broncos on August 30, 2013 and signed to the team's practice squad on September 4, 2013. Garland signed a future's deal with the Broncos on February 4, 2014.[4] He made his NFL debut on November 9, 2014 against the Oakland Raiders.[5]

Garland was Stationed at Scott Air Force Base. as a Public Affairs Office from 2010 to 2012 while assigned to the Denver Broncos Military Reserve players list. Garland held the rank of second lieutenant during this time.

A tip of the cap to Belichick's father, Steve, with the selection of LS Joe Cardona from Navy. Good show.

He's required to complete his military service first, I believe. 19-0 in 2019!

There's your DB......a 4.33 oversized DB................BB.......chess master .........proven each and every pick.
What a one-two punch.....Ensign Long Snapper and our 222 lb transitional DB.........
BB is a true visionary
Ebner should be calling his agent

I love how we can rarely predict what he will do next. A small LB with secondary talent. Great gambles. One of my binky big WR picks could still be there at 202 or next round. However, at this point, those WR picks are more likely competition for Dobson, et. al. rather than upgrades. The same is obviously true at CB.
I just love how GOAT BB is so far ahead of us almost every time.

This used to be the case but DOD has had a directive since 2008 (probably after the Caleb Campbell fiasco) that makes a 2 year commitment a requirement.

I like that we draft players no one has heard of. Would suck if the team had to depend on web sites for information. Not likely we would have just happened to walk into a Mississippi popeye's, for example.

Anyway, this guy looks like a pretty impressive under the radar athlete, though position is an issue.
