Thank god we spent a 2nd round pick on a slow safety who "should be able to contribute in the kicking game". Should line up next to Tavon Wilson on special teams. We are the ONLY team to draft special teams players in the 2nd round.

We're also the only team to win four SBs this century. Go figure.

I just watched a fair bit of his game footage. About half an hour of staring at #85. In it I saw him play over the guard, over the tackle, over the tight end, and from outside in a two point. He's a very intriguing athlete. There were a couple of situations he was playing the 3 on passing downs. Easy win for him to beat the guard with his athleticism but he also displayed an adequate bull rush with good pad height and leverage. He got a few reps playing the 4 in base which surprised me. He didn't get blown off the ball. He plays long in the running game. Very active moving with the blocker. Not a first step edge world beater but he bends well and is more athletic than advertised. He scrapes like an ILB- actually one of the real standout aspects of his game. In a two point he was decent. He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy with the hip fluidity to play off the line very often in the NFL. What did, however surpise me was his pursuit. He may have ran a 4.8 but he pursues like a 4.5 heat seeking missile. There were a few plays where his teammates looked in slow motion in comparrison as he knifed across the field and arrived with bad intent. To me he looks like a left end with plus athleticsm in this system. He can kick in and play over the guard in sub without being too much of a liability. He's not so much of a liability dropping back that you can't zone blitz with him but he doesn't look like a linebacker to me. He's a very interesting athlete. I don't think he'll be a Collins style chess piece, nor the pure linebacker talent that is High, but he strikes me as a very valuable rotational guy who allows some more diversity and flexibility. Can back up Easley and be a productive base end/sub rusher inside. I think he's a player.

Sounds like Chandler Jones insurance to me.

I was actually wondering earlier whether this was about that 3-3 nickel the Pats used early last year, where you'd put Grissom on the strongside as an edge 2-point player, outside the 5 tech.

But now he seems better for the Pats normal and pass-rush 4-2's.

Props to Tom E Curran, who mocked him in the 3rd round

ROUND 3, SELECTION 96

Curran's pick: Geneo Grissom, DE/OLB/DT, Oklahoma, 6-3 1/2, 262 pounds.

Couldn’t find a home so he rented space all over the Sooners defense. Played right outside linebacker in 2014 before an MCL ended his season. Played defensive end in 2013 and also lined up as a slim-line defensive tackle in a three-point stance and his explosiveness (37-inch vertical) made him a nasty matchup problem. He can drop, rush, set the edge, pursue and be a factor with his leaping ability at the line of scrimmage. He had 79 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks over his final two seasons and was a beast against Alabama. The Patriots will find a spot for him and, if they wanted my opinion, it would be as the next Rob Ninkovich.

MCL injury... his real numbers might be better than what he tested at the combine.

Don't like this pick at all, lots of better talents available. But I like this pick more than the Richards pick. Hate wasting a 2nd round pick on a slow safety that may never amount to anything more than a special teams player. Like I said, we better sack the **** out of the QB this year, because our secondary is Arena Ball level.

Thanks for the cogent input jays52...much appreciated. I haven't invested much angst in the Patriots draft for years now. I like to wait and see what they look like and how they fit in the minis and preseason. Game speed can vary from timed 40's in drastic fashion. I believe if a guy can play his role without mistakes, that guy will stick no matter what his measurables are. Malcolm Butler is a perfect example. Nobody thought a damn thing about him, but when I saw him in camp,I could SEE he was an NFL player. I can't say with any fore knowledge or certainty but I believe the Pats look to acquire players that can compete at a high level and then let the cream rise to the top, draft ranking be damned.

Yup.. and if our first game was tomorrow.. you might even be right about us playing Arena Ball.

And thank god BB sometimes hits in undrafted Free Agents, because sometimes he does better there than the actual draft. Especially in the secondary.

Perhaps Curran has this right.

We have a lot of picks in a poor draft. HOWEVER, this seems to be a very good pick. We don't know where his reps will come.

3-cone and 10 yard spot are important considerations too.

Grissom- 1.62-1.65 and 7.24

Colvin - 1.70 and 7.08

Nink - 1.69, 6.96

One thing's for sure = Bye, bye, Bequette. We hardly knew ye.
