Gronk was at the draft and considered a potential 1st rounder. Not even remotely comparable. Sorry buddy.
So he wasn't actually drafted in the second round?

I look forward to BB making a WTF pick just to see the reactions of the armchair GMs here. Always good comedy.

The "armchair GM's" have been right, to date, about the last two controversial reaches at the position. I said in another thread that I looked forward to the homers with only a cursory knowledge of college football stretching to defend this pick and I have not been disappointed. I'm guessing the majority that are defending watched around 0 seconds of Stanford football the last couple of seasons. This kid was not worth a second round pick and it wouldn't have been a travesty if we lost out on him by waiting until the 6th. He's another box safety and less athletic than Pat Chung. That's fantastic that he's a team leader and smart but ask Zach Zenner and other RB's and WR's in the Pac-12 how athletic he is. Again, I'd love to be wrong but this was an awful, awful reach. I'm glad you read some good scouting reports, though.

No need to apologize for being wrong. Hell, that's twice in 7 minutes. At that rate, you'll have "Mea Culpa" tattooed on your forehead by 10:35...

Wow...... You mean to tell me that BB picked an extremely intelligent, no-name, Ivy-league player at a spot the rest of the so-called "experts" thought was too early?????? YOU DONT SAY.

Jesus people....... I know we all have our draft binkys that WE want BB to pick, but unless this is your 1st NEP draft day, NO ONE should be to suprised by this pick. In Bill I (still) Trust.

This isn't about me having binkies. Anyone that reads my posts or has read my posts regarding the safety position since 2006 knows I love physical safeties that bring the pain. I wanted Ryan Clark back in the day and I was recently advocating for Tartt as recently as today. But the difference is I want guys that can pop and aren't a total liability to be smoked in coverage. Richards can do one of those well. The other? Not so much.

Arm chair GMs have much better track record than BB with early round wtf reach picks. Mankins is the only one I can think of who worked out.

Nah, Vollmer worked out too.

You should go get a job in an nfl front office then and make a million or so a year

The ultimate comeback. Because only NFL front office people can have opinions.

I did forget Vollmer. They should stick to WTF lineman.

One positive for Richards is that at least he was invited to the combine.

And to people citing Gronk as comparison, it's not even remotely the same thing.

Was "Jordon" supposed to be Jordan but was misspelled when they filled out the birth certificate?

Maybe BB intended to spell Jamon Brown but instead misspelled it Jordon Richards

Well we didn't have a 5th round pick so Bill just gave us one....Perfect.. As I have said best coach ever and mediocre at best Drafter. Yes...... AT BEST!

Guy just won a Super Bowl made up of a team completely drafted and/or signed by him.

I'm in the camp that IDGAF what Bill does on draft day if this guy busts out, you get an Edelman in round 7 to make up for it.

Some people have just completely lost their minds, you bought a draft mag or watch a ton of college FB you're more knowledgable than the Patriots staff. Okay.

I don't care for the pick either, there was a plug and play starting G in Cann and several other options.. but I just have to roll my eyes at the idea some people suggest that the front office are just a bunch of idiots that don't know what they're doing... these guys are pretty darn smart, spend endless hours scouting these guys, reviewing game footage, interviewing them and talking to people in their lives to get a good profile of them.

Fans sitting at home on their coach can have opinions, but they do not know more than the people who live and breath this for a living.

It was an underwhelming pick, but don't go on and on about how the FO is incompetent

I am not a draftnik and I dont pretend to be.
I am a total homer and in BB I trust... but a safety??
There had to have been an OL there somewhere on the board.

Jordon Richards will needs his smarts because he cannot take part until Stanford graduates.

And yet, Draft study after Draft study grades the Patriots as being among the very best.

In fact, I have not even seen a single long term Draft study that grades the Patriots anywhere near to "only" average. In fact, many of the 5 year studies actually cover the 06 to 09 years that are admittedly our worst.

And yet we still come out very close to the top.

Here is even a quote from the thread that you participated in where @slam added up Career Approximate Value for all teams since 2009 and 2000. Patriots grade out 2nd and 3rd in picking up talent.

I come in and add the perspective of what each teams of the best teams Average Drafting Position was over the same period of time. Patriots have drafted in the worst average drafting position of any team in the NFL.

That doesn't explain Belichick's reaches perhaps, but it goes a long way addressing the handicap in which he drafts under.

To tie in the Average Draft Position with the OPs leaders in CarAv over the same years *

Average Draft Position for CarAV Leaders Since 2000
Code:
          Total Average Draft
  Team CarAV Position
1. SD 1936 17.00
2. GB 1915 22.31
3. NE 1848 25.68
4. CAR 1829 15.87
5. Bal 1819 22.18

Average Draft Position for CarAV Leaders Since 2009
Code:
          Total Average Draft
  Team CarAV Position
1. SEA 547 19.28
2. NE 492 27.71
3. CIN 486 16.85
4. PIT 476 22.71
5. GB 475 24.14

* I hadn't initially used 2000 as a starting point because the Patriots lost their 1st round pick that year. Including a pick at 16 they didn't even get to use didn't seem a fair or representative that it should lower their Average from 26-ish to 25-ish.

Should be noted we also lost our 1st round pick in 2008

I just don't see how anyone can defend a reach pick of a defensive back after Wilson and Harmon.

Where did I say the FO is incompetent and I could do a better job?

I'm just pointing out they have a willful blind spot for reaching for guys way out of leftfield and save for Vollmer/Mankins those picks don't end well.

Sorry if there are any typos in this post I'm sitting on my coach and it won't sit still. ;)

But, did they see Mel Kiper's mock draft on SportsCenter? That's the only thing that really counts in evaluating players.

The more I read about him the more he reminds me of Rodney, who was a mid round pick. We will just have to see how he does on the field rather than the draft "rankings".

Vollmer was a good pick as several teams were rumored to want him in the third round so BB had to move. I never heard of any team having interest in Tavon Wilson anywhere close to the 2nd round and so far haven't heard of anyone with interest in Richards this early
